Prototypical implementation of location-aware services based on a middleware architecture for super-distributed RFID tag infrastructures

We provide evidence of the feasibility and effectiveness of a middleware architecture for mobile devices (MoDs), which employs dense distributions of small computerized entities for providing fault-tolerant location-aware services. We do so by describing exemplary implementations based on radio frequency identification as an enabling technology. Firstly, we present prototypical implementations of the hardware abstraction layer and of selected core middleware services. The latter enable a MoD to store and retrieve data and position information in physical places in a fault-tolerant manner, and to identify places based on a location abstraction which is robust against failure of individual tags. Secondly, we investigate the feasibility of some higher-level services and applications by developing and evaluating prototypical systems for tracing and tracking, self-positioning, and collaborative map-makin

Indoor localization systems-tracking objects and personnel with sensors, wireless networks and RFID

Advances in ubiquitous mobile computing and rapid spread of information systems have fostered a growing interest in indoor location-aware or location-based technologies. In this paper we will introduce the primary technologies used in indoor localization systems by classifying them in three categories: Non-RF technologies, Active-RF technologies and Passive-RF technologies. Both commercialized products and research prototypes in all categories are involved in our discussion. The Passive-RF technologies are further divided into “Mobile tag” and “Mobile reader” systems. We expect such classification can cover most of the indoor localization systems. Features of these systems are briefly compared at the end of this paper

With the emerging mass production of very small, cheap Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) tags, it is becoming feasible to deploy such tags on a large scale. In this paper, we advocate distribution schemes where passive RFID tags are deployed in vast quantities and in a highly redundant fashion over large areas or object surfaces. We show that such an approach opens up a whole spectrum of possibilities for creating novel RFID-based services and applications, including a new means of cooperation between mobile physical entities. We also discuss a number of challenges related to this approach, such as the density and structure of tag distributions, and tag typing and clustering. Finally, we outline two prototypical applications (a smart autonomous vacuum cleaner and a collaborative map-making system) and indicate future directions of research

Smart Object Reminders with RFID and Mobile Technologies

    Get PDF
[[abstract]]In this paper, we present a reminder system that sends a reminder list to the user's mobile device based on the history data collected from the same user and the events in the user's calendar on that day. The system provides an individualized service. The list is to remind the user with objects he/she might have forgotten at home. The objects that the user brings along with are detected by passive RFID technology. Objects are classified into three different levels based on their frequencies in the history data. Rules of the three levels are then followed to decide if a certain object should be in the reminder list or not. A feedback mechanism is also designed to lower the possibility of unnecessary reminding.[[incitationindex]]SCI[[booktype]]電子

An RFID-Based Reminder System for Smart Home

[[abstract]]Some people tend to forget things when they leave home for work or school. It is desired that there would be a reminder system to automatically remind people what they might have forgotten to bring along just when they step outside their home. In this paper, we present a reminder system that uses the RFID technology to detect the objects that a user brings along. The system then provide a reminder object list to the user based on the history data collected from the same user and the events in the user's calendar on that day. The list is to remind the user objects he/she might have forgotten at home. A feedback mechanism is also designed to lower the possibility of unnecessary reminding. The user can mark the objects that are not needed from the reminder object list such that these objects will not appear in the list again in the same situation. A prototype system is introduced in this paper.[[conferencetype]]國際[[conferencedate]]20110322~20110325[[conferencelocation]]Singapore, Republic of Singapor

Comparison between NFC/RFID and bar code system for halal tags identification: Paired sample t-test evaluation

Malaysia is a modern Muslim country where the research on Halal product identification is at the peak. In this study, the authors have developed the mobile applications which is based on Radio Frequency Identification near filed communication RFID/NFC. The author first developed the database based on the data from Jabatan Kemajuan Islam Malaysia JAKIM, which is a Malaysian Halal logo identification authority then the mobile application which uses the near filed communication to detect the Halal food using the Radio Frequency Identification. In this paper authors have performed the experimental analysis by comparing the Bar code system that is compared to parallel time detected by the simple webcam for the Halal Logo Identification and the new developed RFID/NFC mobile applications. Paired sample T-Test was performed by using the SPSS 23.0 version. The results revealed that there is significantly difference between the usability, efficiency, affordability, security and satisfaction. The users are more satisfied with the newly developed mobile application as compared to old halal logo system in Malaysia
