    Unmanned Aircraft Systems are an integral part of the US national critical infrastructure. The authors have endeavored to bring a breadth and quality of information to the reader that is unparalleled in the unclassified sphere. This textbook will fully immerse and engage the reader / student in the cyber-security considerations of this rapidly emerging technology that we know as unmanned aircraft systems (UAS).     Optimization and Communication in UAV Networks

    UAVs are becoming a reality and attract increasing attention. They can be remotely controlled or completely autonomous and be used alone or as a fleet and in a large set of applications. They are constrained by hardware since they cannot be too heavy and rely on batteries. Their use still raises a large set of exciting new challenges in terms of trajectory optimization and positioning when they are used alone or in cooperation, and communication when they evolve in swarm, to name but a few examples.     Collaborative Honeypot Defense in UAV Networks: A Learning-Based Game Approach

    The proliferation of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) opens up new opportunities for on-demand service provisioning anywhere and anytime, but also exposes UAVs to a variety of cyber threats. Low/medium interaction honeypots offer a promising lightweight defense for actively protecting mobile Internet of things, particularly UAV networks. While previous research has primarily focused on honeypot system design and attack pattern recognition, the incentive issue for motivating UAV's participation (e.g., sharing trapped attack data in honeypots) to collaboratively resist distributed and sophisticated attacks remains unexplored. This paper proposes a novel game-theoretical collaborative defense approach to address optimal, fair, and feasible incentive design, in the presence of network dynamics and UAVs' multi-dimensional private information (e.g., valid defense data (VDD) volume, communication delay, and UAV cost). Specifically, we first develop a honeypot game between UAVs and the network operator under both partial and complete information asymmetry scenarios. The optimal VDD-reward contract design problem with partial information asymmetry is then solved using a contract-theoretic approach that ensures budget feasibility, truthfulness, fairness, and computational efficiency. In addition, under complete information asymmetry, we devise a distributed reinforcement learning algorithm to dynamically design optimal contracts for distinct types of UAVs in the time-varying UAV network. Extensive simulations demonstrate that the proposed scheme can motivate UAV's cooperation in VDD sharing and improve defensive effectiveness, compared with conventional schemes.Comment: Accepted Aug. 28, 2023 by IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics & Security. arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:2209.1381

    Deployment and navigation of aerial drones for sensing and interacting applications

    Existing research recognises the critical role played by Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) (also referred to as drones) to numerous civilian applications. Typical drone applications include surveillance, wireless communication, agriculture, among many others. One of the biggest challenges is to determine the deployment and navigation of the drones to benefit the most for different applications. Many research questions have been raised about this topic. For example, drone-enabled wildlife monitoring has received much attention in recent years. Unfortunately, this approach results in significant disturbance to different species of wild animals. Moreover, with the capability of rapidly moving communication supply towards demand when required, the drone equipped with a base station, i.e., drone-cell, is becoming a promising solution for providing cellular networks to victims and rescue teams in disaster-affected areas. However, few studies have investigated the optimal deployments of multiple drone-cells with limited backhaul communication distances. In addition, the use of autonomous drones as flying interactors for many real-life applications has not been sufficiently discussed. With superior maneuverability, drone-enabled autonomous aerial interacting can potentially be used on shark attack prevention and animal herding. Nevertheless, previous studies of autonomous drones have not dealt with such applications in much detail. This thesis explores the solutions to all the mentioned research questions, with a particular focus on the deployment and navigation of the drones. First, we provide one of the first investigations into reducing the negative impacts of wildlife monitoring drones by navigation control. Second, we study the optimal placement of a group of drone-cells with limited backhaul communication ranges, aims to maximise the number of served users. Third, we propose a novel method named ‘drone shark shield’, which uses communicating autonomous drones to intervene and prevent shark attacks for protecting swimmers and surfers. Lastly, we introduce one of the first autonomous drone herding systems for mustering a large number of farm animals efficiently. Simulations have been conducted to verify the effectiveness of the proposed approaches. We believe that our findings in this thesis shed new light on the fundamental benefits of autonomous civilian drones

    Reliable Navigation for SUAS in Complex Indoor Environments

    Indoor environments are a particular challenge for Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs). Effective navigation through these GPS-denied environments require alternative localization systems, as well as methods of sensing and avoiding obstacles while remaining on-task. Additionally, the relatively small clearances and human presence characteristic of indoor spaces necessitates a higher level of precision and adaptability than is common in traditional UAV flight planning and execution. This research blends the optimization of individual technologies, such as state estimation and environmental sensing, with system integration and high-level operational planning. The combination of AprilTag visual markers, multi-camera Visual Odometry, and IMU data can be used to create a robust state estimator that describes position, velocity, and rotation of a multicopter within an indoor environment. However these data sources have unique, nonlinear characteristics that should be understood to effectively plan for their usage in an automated environment. The research described herein begins by analyzing the unique characteristics of these data streams in order to create a highly-accurate, fault-tolerant state estimator. Upon this foundation, the system built, tested, and described herein uses Visual Markers as navigation anchors, visual odometry for motion estimation and control, and then uses depth sensors to maintain an up-to-date map of the UAV\u27s immediate surroundings. It develops and continually refines navigable routes through a novel combination of pre-defined and sensory environmental data.     Outdoor operations of multiple quadrotors in windy environment

    Coordinated multiple small unmanned aerial vehicles (sUAVs) offer several advantages over a single sUAV platform. These advantages include improved task efficiency, reduced task completion time, improved fault tolerance, and higher task flexibility. However, their deployment in an outdoor environment is challenging due to the presence of wind gusts. The coordinated motion of a multi-sUAV system in the presence of wind disturbances is a challenging problem when considering collision avoidance (safety), scalability, and communication connectivity. Performing wind-agnostic motion planning for sUAVs may produce a sizeable cross-track error if the wind on the planned route leads to actuator saturation. In a multi-sUAV system, each sUAV has to locally counter the wind disturbance while maintaining the safety of the system. Such continuous manipulation of the control effort for multiple sUAVs under uncertain environmental conditions is computationally taxing and can lead to reduced efficiency and safety concerns. Additionally, modern day sUAV systems are susceptible to cyberattacks due to their use of commercial wireless communication infrastructure. This dissertation aims to address these multi-faceted challenges related to the operation of outdoor rotor-based multi-sUAV systems. A comprehensive review of four representative techniques to measure and estimate wind speed and direction using rotor-based sUAVs is discussed. After developing a clear understanding of the role wind gusts play in quadrotor motion, two decentralized motion planners for a multi-quadrotor system are implemented and experimentally evaluated in the presence of wind disturbances. The first planner is rooted in the reinforcement learning (RL) technique of state-action-reward-state-action (SARSA) to provide generalized path plans in the presence of wind disturbances. While this planner provides feasible trajectories for the quadrotors, it does not provide guarantees of collision avoidance. The second planner implements a receding horizon (RH) mixed-integer nonlinear programming (MINLP) model that is integrated with control barrier functions (CBFs) to guarantee collision-free transit of the multiple quadrotors in the presence of wind disturbances. Finally, a novel communication protocol using Ethereum blockchain-based smart contracts is presented to address the challenge of secure wireless communication. The U.S. sUAV market is expected to be worth $92 Billion by 2030. The Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) noted in its seminal economic report that UAVs would be responsible for creating 100,000 jobs by 2025 in the U.S. The rapid proliferation of drone technology in various applications has led to an increasing need for professionals skilled in sUAV piloting, designing, fabricating, repairing, and programming. Engineering educators have recognized this demand for certified sUAV professionals. This dissertation aims to address this growing sUAV-market need by evaluating two active learning-based instructional approaches designed for undergraduate sUAV education. The two approaches leverages the interactive-constructive-active-passive (ICAP) framework of engagement and explores the use of Competition based Learning (CBL) and Project based Learning (PBL). The CBL approach is implemented through a drone building and piloting competition that featured 97 students from undergraduate and graduate programs at NJIT. The competition focused on 1) drone assembly, testing, and validation using commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) parts, 2) simulation of drone flight missions, and 3) manual and semi-autonomous drone piloting were implemented. The effective student learning experience from this competition served as the basis of a new undergraduate course on drone science fundamentals at NJIT. This undergraduate course focused on the three foundational pillars of drone careers: 1) drone programming using Python, 2) designing and fabricating drones using Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and rapid prototyping, and 3) the US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 Commercial small Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (sUAVs) pilot test. Multiple assessment methods are applied to examine the students’ gains in sUAV skills and knowledge and student attitudes towards an active learning-based approach for sUAV education. The use of active learning techniques to address these challenges lead to meaningful student engagement and positive gains in the learning outcomes as indicated by quantitative and qualitative assessments

    Synthesis of formation control for an aquatic swarm robotics system

    Formations are the spatial organization of objects or entities according to some predefined pattern. They can be found in nature, in social animals such as fish schools, and insect colonies, where the spontaneous organization into emergent structures takes place. Formations have a multitude of applications such as in military and law enforcement scenarios, where they are used to increase operational performance. The concept is even present in collective sports modalities such as football, which use formations as a strategy to increase teams efficiency. Swarm robotics is an approach for the study of multi-robot systems composed of a large number of simple units, inspired in self-organization in animal societies. These have the potential to conduct tasks too demanding for a single robot operating alone. When applied to the coordination of such type of systems, formations allow for a coordinated motion and enable SRS to increase their sensing efficiency as a whole. In this dissertation, we present a virtual structure formation control synthesis for a multi-robot system. Control is synthesized through the use of evolutionary robotics, from where the desired collective behavior emerges, while displaying key-features such as fault tolerance and robustness. Initial experiments on formation control synthesis were conducted in simulation environment. We later developed an inexpensive aquatic robotic platform in order to conduct experiments in real world conditions. Our results demonstrated that it is possible to synthesize formation control for a multi-robot system making use of evolutionary robotics. The developed robotic platform was used in several scientific studies.As formações consistem na organização de objetos ou entidades de acordo com um padrão pré-definido. Elas podem ser encontradas na natureza, em animais sociais tais como peixes ou colónias de insetos, onde a organização espontânea em estruturas se verifica. As formações aplicam-se em diversos contextos, tais como cenários militares ou de aplicação da lei, onde são utilizadas para aumentar a performance operacional. O conceito está também presente em desportos coletivos tais como o futebol, onde as formações são utilizadas como estratégia para aumentar a eficiência das equipas. Os enxames de robots são uma abordagem para o estudo de sistemas multi-robô compostos de um grande número de unidades simples, inspirado na organização de sociedades animais. Estes têm um elevado potencial na resolução de tarefas demasiado complexas para um único robot. Quando aplicadas na coordenação deste tipo de sistemas, as formações permitem o movimento coordenado e o aumento da sensibilidade do enxame como um todo. Nesta dissertação apresentamos a síntese de controlo de formação para um sistema multi-robô. O controlo é sintetizado através do uso de robótica evolucionária, de onde o comportamento coletivo emerge, demonstrando ainda funcionalidadeschave tais como tolerância a falhas e robustez. As experiências iniciais na síntese de controlo foram realizadas em simulação. Mais tarde foi desenvolvida uma plataforma robótica para a condução de experiências no mundo real. Os nossos resultados demonstram que é possível sintetizar controlo de formação para um sistema multi-robô, utilizando técnicas de robótica evolucionária. A plataforma desenvolvida foi ainda utilizada em diversos estudos científicos
