    Crystal gazer : profile-driven write-rationing garbage collection for hybrid memories

    Non-volatile memories (NVM) offer greater capacity than DRAM but suffer from high latency and low write endurance. Hybrid memories combine DRAM and NVM to form scalable memory systems with the promise of high capacity, low energy consumption, and high endurance. Automatically managing hybrid NVM-DRAM memories to achieve their promise without changing user applications or their programming models remains an open question. This paper uses garbage collection in managed languages to exploit NVM capacity while preventing NVM wear out in hybrid memories with no changes to the programming model. We introduce profile-driven write-rationing garbage collection. Allocation sites that produce frequently written objects are predicted based on previous program executions. Objects are initially allocated in a DRAM nursery space. The collector copies surviving nursery objects from highly written sites to a mature DRAM space and read-mostly objects to a mature NVM space.Write-intensity prediction for 15 Java benchmarks accurately places objects in the correct space, eliminating expensive object monitoring from prior write-rationing garbage collectors. Furthermore, our technique exposes a Pareto tradeoff between DRAM usage and NVM lifetime, unlike prior work. Experimental results on NUMA hardware that emulates hybrid NVM-DRAM memory demonstrates that profile-driven write-rationing garbage collection reduces the number of writes to NVM compared to prior work to extend its lifetime, maximizes the use of NVM for its capacity, and achieves good performance

    JVM-based Techniques for Improving Java Observability

    Observability measures the support of computer systems to accurately capture, analyze, and present (collectively observe) the internal information about the systems. Observability frameworks play important roles for program understanding, troubleshooting, performance diagnosis, and optimizations. However, traditional solutions are either expensive or coarse-grained, consequently compromising their utility in accommodating today’s increasingly complex software systems. New solutions are emerging for VM-based languages due to the full control language VMs have over program executions. Existing such solutions, nonetheless, still lack flexibility, have high overhead, or provide limited context information for developing powerful dynamic analyses. In this thesis, we present a VM-based infrastructure, called marker tracing framework (MTF), to address the deficiencies in the existing solutions for providing better observability for VM-based languages. MTF serves as a solid foundation for implementing fine-grained low-overhead program instrumentation. Specifically, MTF allows analysis clients to: 1) define custom events with rich semantics ; 2) specify precisely the program locations where the events should trigger; and 3) adaptively enable/disable the instrumentation at runtime. In addition, MTF-based analysis clients are more powerful by having access to all information available to the VM. To demonstrate the utility and effectiveness of MTF, we present two analysis clients: 1) dynamic typestate analysis with adaptive online program analysis (AOPA); and 2) selective probabilistic calling context analysis (SPCC). In addition, we evaluate the runtime performance of MTF and the typestate client with the DaCapo benchmarks. The results show that: 1) MTF has acceptable runtime overhead when tracing moderate numbers of marker events; and 2) AOPA is highly effective in reducing the event frequency for the dynamic typestate analysis; and 3) language VMs can be exploited to offer greater observability

    Ramasse-miettes générationnel et incémental gérant les cycles et les gros objets en utilisant des frames délimités

    Ces dernières années, des recherches ont été menées sur plusieurs techniques reliées à la collection des déchets. Plusieurs découvertes centrales pour le ramassage de miettes par copie ont été réalisées. Cependant, des améliorations sont encore possibles. Dans ce mémoire, nous introduisons des nouvelles techniques et de nouveaux algorithmes pour améliorer le ramassage de miettes. En particulier, nous introduisons une technique utilisant des cadres délimités pour marquer et retracer les pointeurs racines. Cette technique permet un calcul efficace de l'ensemble des racines. Elle réutilise des concepts de deux techniques existantes, card marking et remembered sets, et utilise une configuration bidirectionelle des objets pour améliorer ces concepts en stabilisant le surplus de mémoire utilisée et en réduisant la charge de travail lors du parcours des pointeurs. Nous présentons aussi un algorithme pour marquer récursivement les objets rejoignables sans utiliser de pile (éliminant le gaspillage de mémoire habituel). Nous adaptons cet algorithme pour implémenter un ramasse-miettes copiant en profondeur et améliorer la localité du heap. Nous améliorons l'algorithme de collection des miettes older-first et sa version générationnelle en ajoutant une phase de marquage garantissant la collection de toutes les miettes, incluant les structures cycliques réparties sur plusieurs fenêtres. Finalement, nous introduisons une technique pour gérer les gros objets. Pour tester nos idées, nous avons conçu et implémenté, dans la machine virtuelle libre Java SableVM, un cadre de développement portable et extensible pour la collection des miettes. Dans ce cadre, nous avons implémenté des algorithmes de collection semi-space, older-first et generational. Nos expérimentations montrent que la technique du cadre délimité procure des performances compétitives pour plusieurs benchmarks. Elles montrent aussi que, pour la plupart des benchmarks, notre algorithme de parcours en profondeur améliore la localité et augmente ainsi la performance.     Subheap-Augmented Garbage Collection

    Automated memory management avoids the tedium and danger of manual techniques. However, as no programmer input is required, no widely available interface exists to permit principled control over sometimes unacceptable performance costs. This dissertation explores the idea that performance-oriented languages should give programmers greater control over where and when the garbage collector (GC) expends effort. We describe an interface and implementation to expose heap partitioning and collection decisions without compromising type safety. We show that our interface allows the programmer to encode a form of reference counting using Hayes\u27 notion of key objects. Preliminary experimental data suggests that our proposed mechanism can avoid high overheads suffered by tracing collectors in some scenarios, especially with tight heaps. However, for other applications, the costs of applying subheaps---in human effort and runtime overheads---remain daunting

    Three pitfalls in Java performance evaluation

    The Java programming language has known a remarkable growth over the last decade. This is partially due to the infrastructure required to run Java ap- plications on general purpose microprocessors: a Java virtual machine (VM). The VM ensures that Java applications are portable across different hardware platforms, because it shelters the applications from the underlying system. Hence the motto write once, run (almost) anywhere. Java applications are compiled to an intermediate form, called bytecode, and consist of a number of so-called class files. The virtual machine takes care of class loading, interpreting or compiling the bytecode to the native code of the underlying hardware platform, thread scheduling, garbage collection, etc. As such, during the execution of a Java application, the VM regularly intervenes to take care of housekeeping tasks and to optimise the application as it is executing. Furthermore, the specific implementation details of most virtual machines insert non-deterministic behaviour, not into the semantic part of the execution, but rather into the lower level execution. For example, to bring a Java application up to competitive speed with classical compiled programs written in languages such as C, the virtual machine needs to optimise Java bytecode. To limit the execution overhead, most virtual machines use a time sampling mechanism to determine the hot methods in the application. This introduces non-determinism, as over several runs, the methods are not always optimised at the same moment, nor is the set of optimised methods always the same. Other factors that introduce non-determinism are the thread scheduling, garbage collection, etc. It is readily seen that performance analysis of Java applications is not as simple as it seems at first, and warrants closer inspection. In this dissertation we are mainly interested in the behaviour of Java applications and their performance. In the course of this work, we uncovered three major pitfalls that were not taken into account by researchers when analysing Java performance prior to this work. We will briefly summarise the main achievements presented in this dissertation. The first pitfall we present involves the interaction between the virtual machine, the application and the input to the application. The performance for short running applications is shown to be mainly determined by the virtual machine. For longer running applications, this influence decreases, but remains tangible. We use statistical analysis, such as principal components analysis and cluster analysis (K-means and hierarchical clustering) to demonstrate and clarify the pitfall. By means of a large number of performance char- acteristics measured using hardware performance counters, five virtual machines and fourteen benchmarks with both a small and a large input size, we demonstrate that short running workloads are primarily clustered by virtual machines. Even for long running applications from the SPECjvm98 benchmark suite, the virtual machine still exerts a large influence on the observed behaviour at the microarchitectural level. This work has shown the need for both larger and longer running benchmarks than were available prior to it – this was (partially) met by the introduction of the DaCapo benchmark suite – as well as a careful consideration when setting up an experiment to avoid measuring the virtual machine, rather than the benchmark. Prior to this work, people were quite often using simulation with short running applications (to save time) for exploring Java performance. The second pitfall we uncover involves the analysis of performance numbers. During a survey of 50 papers published at premier conferences, such as OOPSLA, PLDI, CGO, ISMM and VEE, over the past seven years, we found that a variety of approaches are used, both for experimental design – for example, the input size, virtual machines, heap sizes, etc. – and, even more importantly, for data analysis – for example, using a best out of 3 performance number. New techniques are pitted against existing work using these prevalent approaches, and conclusions regarding their successfulness in beating prior state-of-the-art are based upon them. Given the fact that the execution of Java applications usually involves non-determinism in the virtual machine – for example, when determining which methods to optimise – it should come as no surprise that the lack of statistical rigour in these prevalent approaches leads to misleading or even incorrect conclusions. By this we mean that the conclusions are either not representative of what actually happens, or even contradict reality, as modelled in a statistical manner. To circumvent this pitfall, we propose a rigorous statistical approach that uses confidence intervals to both report and compare performance numbers. We also claim that sufficient experiments should be conducted to get a reliable performance measure. The non-determinism caused by the timer-based optimisation component in a virtual machine can be eliminated using so-called replay compilation. This technique will record a compilation plan during a first execution or profiling run of the application. During a second execution, the application is iterated twice: once to compile and optimise all methods found in the compilation plan, and a second time to perform the actual measurement. It turns out however that current practice of using either a single plan – corresponding to the best performing profiling run – or a combined plan choosing the methods that were optimised in, say, more than half the profiling runs, is no match for using multiple plans. The variability observed in the plans themselves is too large to capture in one of the current practices. Consequently, using multiple plans is definitely the better option. Moreover, this allows using a matched-pair approach in the data analysis, which results in tighter confidence intervals for the mean performance number. The third pitfall we examine is the usage of global performance numbers when tuning either an application or a virtual machine. We show that Java applications exhibit phase behaviour at the method level. This means that instances of the same method show more similarity to each other, behaviourwise, than to instances of other methods. A phase can then be identified as a set of sub-trees of the dynamic call-tree, with each sub-tree headed by the same method. We present an two-step algorithm that allows correlating hardware performance counter data in step 2 with the phases determined in step 1. The information obtained can be applied to show the programmer which methods perform worse than average, for example with respect to the number of cache misses they incur. In the dissertation, we pay particular attention to statistical rigour. For each pitfall, we use statistics to demonstrate its presence. Hopefully this work will encourage other researchers to use more rigour in their work as well

    Using Class-Level Static Properties to Predict Object Lifetimes

    Today, most modern programming languages such as C # or Java use an automatic memory management system also known as a Garbage Collector (GC). Over the course of program execution, new objects are allocated in memory, and some older objects become unreachable (die). In order for the program to keep running, it becomes necessary to free the memory of dead objects; this task is performed periodically by the GC. Research has shown that most objects die young and as a result, generational collectors have become very popular over the years. Yet, these algorithms are not good at handling long-lived objects. Typically, long-lived objects would first be allocated in the nursery space and be promoted (copied) to an older generation after surviving a garbage collection, hence wasting precious time. By allocating long-lived and immortal objects directly into infrequently or never collected regions, pretenuring can reduce garbage collection costs significantly. Current state of the art methodology to predict object lifetime involves off-line profiling combined with a simple, heuristic classification. Profiling is slow (can take days), requires gathering gigabytes of data that need to be analysed (can take hours), and needs to be repeated for every previously unseen program. This thesis explores the space of lifetime predictions and shows how object lifetimes can be predicted accurately and quickly using simple program characteristics gathered within minutes. Following an innovative methodology introduced in this thesis, object lifetime predictions are fed into a specifically modified Java virtual machine. Performance tests show gains in GC times of as much as 77% for the “SPEC jvm98” benchmarks, against a generational copying collector

    Profile-based pretenuring

    Pretenuring can reduce copying costs in garbage collectors by allocating long-lived objects into regions that the garbage collector will rarely, if ever, collect. We extend previous work on pretenuring as follows: (1) We produce pretenuring advice that is neutral with respect to the garbage collector algorithm and configuration. We thus can and do combine advice from different applications. We find for our benchmarks that predictions using object lifetimes at each allocation site in Java programs are accurate, which simplifies the pretenuring implementation. (2) We gather and apply advice to both applications and Jikes RVM, a compiler and runtime system for Java written in Java. Our results demonstrate that building combined advice into Jikes RVM from different application executions improves performance, regardless of the application Jikes RVM is compiling and executing. This build-time advice thus gives user applications some benefits of pretenuring, without any application profiling. No previous work uses profile feedback to pretenure in the runtime system. (3) We find that application-only advice also consistently improves performance, but that the combination of build-time and application-specific advice is almost always noticeably better. (4) Our same advice improves the performance of generational, Older First, and Beltway collectors, illustrating that it is collector neutral. (5) We include an immortal allocation space in addition to a nursery and older generation, and show that pretenuring to immortal space has substantial benefit
