This report reviews the Expectation Maximization EM algorithm and applies it to the data segmentation problem yielding the Expectation Maximization Segmentation EMS algorithm The EMS algorithm requires batch processing of the data and can be applied to mode switching or jumping linear dynamical state space models The EMS algorithm consists of an optimal fusion of fixed interval Kalman smoothing and discrete optimization. Dewetting on porous media with aspiration

We consider a porous solid covered with a water film (or with a drop) in situations where the liquid is pumped in, either spontaneously (if the porous medium is hydrophilic) or mechanically (by an external pump). The dynamics of dewetting is then strongly modified. We analyse a few major examples: a) horizontal films, which break at a certain critical thickness, b) the "modified Landau-Levich problem" where a porous plate moves up from a bath and carries a film: aspiration towards the plate limits the height H reached by the film, c) certain situation where the hysteresis of contact angles is important.Comment: Revised version: The analysis of the 'modified Landau-Levich problem' (section 3) has been significantly revised. Sparser Johnson-Lindenstrauss Transforms

We give two different and simple constructions for dimensionality reduction in $\ell_2$ via linear mappings that are sparse: only an $O(\varepsilon)$-fraction of entries in each column of our embedding matrices are non-zero to achieve distortion $1+\varepsilon$ with high probability, while still achieving the asymptotically optimal number of rows. These are the first constructions to provide subconstant sparsity for all values of parameters, improving upon previous works of Achlioptas (JCSS 2003) and Dasgupta, Kumar, and Sarl\'{o}s (STOC 2010). This study aims to find out the mistakes made by students in solving equations straight line. This research is a qualitative research. Data collection techniques used were interviews, observation, and documentation. The results of the analysis indicate the type of errors students, among others: (a) errors language with highest percentage in the problem section gradient is 13.125% (classified as very low), language mistakes are often made students an understanding of mathematical symbols and sentence comprehension questions that granted (b) the misconceptions with highest percentage in the problem section gradient of 15% (classified as very low), the misconceptions that often do students a requirement of two lines perpendicular to each other, arithmetic operations between the numbers of positive and negative, and describes the line equation straight or coordinate point in a graph (c) the error count with the highest percentage in the problem section gradient is 12.5% (classified as very low), counting errors are often made of students is surgery plus, minus, times, and for the numbers positive and negative; and move the segment, so it can be said to be an error in solving equations straight line contained in section gradient and relatively very low

2010 Anchorage Underage Drinking Survey: A Look at Adult Attitudes, Perceptions, and Norms

The Anchorage Underage Drinking Survey (AUDS) was conducted to assess adults’ recent exposure to Communities Mobilizing for Change on Alcohol media campaign about underage drinking, as well as adult attitudes, norms, and perceptions regarding the underage drinking problem in Anchorage. Our interest was in understanding community perceptions regarding the extent of the underage drinking problem, underage access to alcohol through social and retail outlets, consequences of underage drinking, and laws and policies designed to reduce underage drinking and the consequences stemming from it. The survey contained six major sections: (1) underage drinking problem, (2) adult influences on underage drinking, (3) alcohol consumption, (4) responses to underage drinking, (5) public service advertisements, and (6) respondent background information.Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
