    A risk-aware architecture for resilient spacecraft operations

    In this paper we discuss a resilient, risk-aware software architecture for onboard, real-time autonomous operations that is intended to robustly handle uncertainty in space-craft behavior within hazardous and unconstrained environments, without unnecessarily increasing complexity. This architecture, the Resilient Spacecraft Executive (RSE), serves three main functions: (1) adapting to component failures to allow graceful degradation, (2) accommodating environments, science observations, and spacecraft capabilities that are not fully known in advance, and (3) making risk-aware decisions without waiting for slow ground-based reactions. This RSE is made up of four main parts: deliberative, habitual, and reflexive layers, and a state estimator that interfaces with all three. We use a risk-aware goal-directed executive within the deliberative layer to perform risk-informed planning, to satisfy the mission goals (specified by mission control) within the specified priorities and constraints. Other state-of-the-art algorithms to be integrated into the RSE include correct-by-construction control synthesis and model-based estimation and diagnosis. We demonstrate the feasibility of the architecture in a simple implementation of the RSE for a simulated Mars rover scenario

    In-band network telemetry in industrial wireless sensor networks

    With the emergence of the Internet of Things (IoT) and Industry 4.0 concepts, industrial applications are going through a tremendous change that is imposing increasingly diverse and demanding network dynamics and requirements with a wider and more fine-grained scale. Therefore, there is a growing need for more flexible and reconfigurable industrial networking solutions complemented with powerful monitoring and management functionalities. In this sense, this paper presents a novel efficient network monitoring and telemetry solution for Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks mainly focusing on the 6TiSCH Network stack, a complete protocol stack for ultra-reliable ultra-low-power wireless mesh networks. The proposed monitoring solution creates a flexible and powerful in-band network telemetry design with minimized resource consumption and communication overhead while supporting a wide range of monitoring operations and strategies for dealing with various network scenarios and use cases. Besides, the technical capabilities and characteristics of the proposed solution are evaluated via a real-life implementation, practical and theoretical analysis. These experiments demonstrate that in-band telemetry can provide ultra-efficient network monitoring operations without any effect on the network behavior and performance, validating its suitability for Industrial Wireless Sensor Networks

    A Real-Time Communication Framework for Wireless Sensor Networks

    Recent advances in miniaturization and low power design have led to a flurry of activity in wireless sensor networks. Sensor networks have different constraints than traditional wired networks. A wireless sensor network is a special network with large numbers of nodes equipped with embedded processors, sensors, and radios. These nodes collaborate to accomplish a common task such as environment monitoring or asset tracking. In many applications, sensor nodes will be deployed in an ad-hoc fashion without careful planning. They must organize themselves to form a multihop, wireless communication network. In sensor network environments, much research has been conducted in areas such as power consumption, self-organisation techniques, routing between the sensors, and the communication between the sensor and the sink. On the other hand, real-time communication with the Quality of Service (QoS) concept in wireless sensor networks is still an open research field. Most protocols either ignore real time or simply attempt to process as fast as possible and hope that this speed is sufficient to meet the deadline. However, the introduction of real-time communication has created additional challenges in this area. The sensor node spends most of its life routing packets from one node to another until the packet reaches the sink; therefore, the node functions as a small router most of the time. Since sensor networks deal with time-critical applications, it is often necessary for communication to meet real time constraints. However, research that deals with providing QoS guarantees for real-time traffic in sensor networks is still in its infancy.This thesis presents a real-time communication framework to provide quality of service in sensor networks environments. The proposed framework consists of four components: First, present an analytical model for implementing Priority Queuing (PQ) in a sensor node to calculate the queuing delay. The exact packet delay for corresponding classes is calculated. Further, the analytical results are validated through an extensive simulation study. Second, report on a novel analytical model based on a limited service polling discipline. The model is based on an M/D/1 queuing system (a special class of M/G/1 queuing systems), which takes into account two different classes of traffic in a sensor node. The proposed model implements two queues in a sensor node that are served in a round robin fashion. The exact queuing delay in a sensor node for corresponding classes is calculated. Then, the analytical results are validated through an extensive simulation study. Third, exhibit a novel packet delivery mechanism, namely the Multiple Level Stateless Protocol (MLSP), as a real-time protocol for sensor networks to guarantee the traffic in wireless sensor networks. MLSP improves the packet loss rate and the handling of holes in sensor network much better than its counterpart, MMSPEED. It also introduces the k-limited polling model for the first time. In addition, the whole sending packets dropped significantly compared to MMSPEED, which it leads to decrease the consumption power. Fourth, explain a new framework for moving data from the sink to the user, at a low cost and low power, using the Universal Mobile Telecommunication System (UMTS), which is standard for the Third Generation Mobile System (3G). The integration of sensor networks with the 3G mobile network infrastructure will reduce the cost of building new infrastructures and enable the large-scale deployment of sensor network

    Energy efficient data collection and dissemination protocols in self-organised wireless sensor networks

    Wireless sensor networks (WSNs) are used for event detection and data collection in a plethora of environmental monitoring applications. However a critical factor limits the extension of WSNs into new application areas: energy constraints. This thesis develops self-organising energy efficient data collection and dissemination protocols in order to support WSNs in event detection and data collection and thus extend the use of sensor-based networks to many new application areas. Firstly, a Dual Prediction and Probabilistic Scheduler (DPPS) is developed. DPPS uses a Dual Prediction Scheme combining compression and load balancing techniques in order to manage sensor usage more efficiently. DPPS was tested and evaluated through computer simulations and empirical experiments. Results showed that DPPS reduces energy consumption in WSNs by up to 35% while simultaneously maintaining data quality and satisfying a user specified accuracy constraint. Secondly, an Adaptive Detection-driven Ad hoc Medium Access Control (ADAMAC) protocol is developed. ADAMAC limits the Data Forwarding Interruption problem which causes increased end-to-end delay and energy consumption in multi-hop sensor networks. ADAMAC uses early warning alarms to dynamically adapt the sensing intervals and communication periods of a sensor according to the likelihood of any new events occurring. Results demonstrated that compared to previous protocols such as SMAC, ADAMAC dramatically reduces end-to-end delay while still limiting energy consumption during data collection and dissemination. The protocols developed in this thesis, DPPS and ADAMAC, effectively alleviate the energy constraints associated with WSNs and will support the extension of sensorbased networks to many more application areas than had hitherto been readily possible

    Medium access control, error control and routing in underwater acoustic networks: a discussion on protocol design and implementation

    The journey of underwater communication which began from Leonardo’s era took four and a half centuries to find practical applications for military purposes during World War II. However, over the last three decades, underwater acoustic communications witnessed a massive development due to the advancements in the design of underwater communicating peripherals and their supporting protocols. Successively, doors are opened for a wide range of applications to employ in the underwater environment, such as oceanography, pollution monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster prevention, navigation assistance, monitoring, coastal patrol and surveillance. Different applications may have different characteristics and hence, may require different network architectures. For instance, routing protocols designed for unpartitioned multi-hop networks are not suitable for Delay-Tolerant Networks. Furthermore, single-hop networks do not need routing protocols at all. Therefore, before developing a protocol one must study the network architecture properly and design it accordingly. There are several other factors which should also be considered with the network architecture while designing an efficient protocol for underwater networks, such as long propagation delay, limited bandwidth, limited battery power, high bit error rate of the channel and several other adverse properties of the channel, such as, multi-path, fading and refractive behaviors. Moreover, the environment also has an impact on the performance of the protocols designed for underwater networks. Even temperature changes in a single day have an impact on the performance of the protocols. A good protocol designed for any network should consider some or all of these characteristics to achieve better performance. In this thesis, we first discuss the impact of the environment on the performance of MAC and routing protocols. From our investigation, we discover that even temperature changes within a day may affect the sound speed profile and hence, the channel changes and the protocol performance vary. After that we discuss several protocols which are specifically designed for underwater acoustic networks to serve different purposes and for different network architectures. Underwater Selective Repeat (USR) is an error control protocol designed to assure reliable data transmission in the MAC layer. One may suspect that employing an error control technique over a channel which already suffers from long propagation delays is a burden. However, USR utilizes long propagation by transmitting multiple packets in a single RTT using an interlacing technique. After USR, a routing protocol for surveillance networks is discussed where some sensors are laid down at the bottom of the sea and some sinks are placed outside the area. If a sensor detects an asset within its detection range, it announces the presence of intruders by transmitting packets to the sinks. It may happen that the discovered asset is an enemy ship or an enemy submarine which creates noise to jam the network. Therefore, in surveillance networks, it is necessary that the protocols have jamming resistance capabilities. Moreover, since the network supports multiple sinks with similar anycast address, we propose a Jamming Resistance multi-path Multi-Sink Routing Protocol (MSRP) using a source routing technique. However, the problem of source routing is that it suffers from large overhead (every packet includes the whole path information) with respect to other routing techniques, and also suffers from the unidirectional link problem. Therefore, another routing protocol based on a distance vector technique, called Multi-path Routing with Limited Cross-Path Interference (L-CROP) protocol is proposed, which employs a neighbor-aware multi-path discovery algorithm to support low interference multiple paths between each source-destination pair. Following that, another routing protocol is discussed for next generation coastal patrol and surveillance network, called Underwater Delay-Tolerant Network (UDTN) routing where some AUVs carry out the patrolling work of a given area and report to a shore based control-center. Since the area to be patrolled is large, AUVs experience intermittent connectivity. In our proposed protocol, two nodes that understand to be in contact with each other calculate and divide their contact duration equally so that every node gets a fair share of the contact duration to exchange data. Moreover, a probabilistic spray technique is employed to restrict the number of packet transmissions and for error correction a modified version of USR is employed. In the appendix, we discuss a framework which was designed by our research group to realize underwater communication through simulation which is used in most of the simulations in this thesis, called DESERT Underwater (short for DEsign, Simulate, Emulate and Realize Test-beds for Underwater network protocols). It is an underwater extension of the NS-Miracle simulator to support the design and implementation of underwater network protocols. Its creation assists the researchers in to utilizing the same codes designed for the simulator to employ in actual hardware devices and test in the real underwater scenario

    A Middleware framework for self-adaptive large scale distributed services

    Modern service-oriented applications demand the ability to adapt to changing conditions and unexpected situations while maintaining a required QoS. Existing self-adaptation approaches seem inadequate to address this challenge because many of their assumptions are not met on the large-scale, highly dynamic infrastructures where these applications are generally deployed on. The main motivation of our research is to devise principles that guide the construction of large scale self-adaptive distributed services. We aim to provide sound modeling abstractions based on a clear conceptual background, and their realization as a middleware framework that supports the development of such services. Taking the inspiration from the concepts of decentralized markets in economics, we propose a solution based on three principles: emergent self-organization, utility driven behavior and model-less adaptation. Based on these principles, we designed Collectives, a middleware framework which provides a comprehensive solution for the diverse adaptation concerns that rise in the development of distributed systems. We tested the soundness and comprehensiveness of the Collectives framework by implementing eUDON, a middleware for self-adaptive web services, which we then evaluated extensively by means of a simulation model to analyze its adaptation capabilities in diverse settings. We found that eUDON exhibits the intended properties: it adapts to diverse conditions like peaks in the workload and massive failures, maintaining its QoS and using efficiently the available resources; it is highly scalable and robust; can be implemented on existing services in a non-intrusive way; and do not require any performance model of the services, their workload or the resources they use. We can conclude that our work proposes a solution for the requirements of self-adaptation in demanding usage scenarios without introducing additional complexity. In that sense, we believe we make a significant contribution towards the development of future generation service-oriented applications.Las Aplicaciones Orientadas a Servicios modernas demandan la capacidad de adaptarse a condiciones variables y situaciones inesperadas mientras mantienen un cierto nivel de servio esperado (QoS). Los enfoques de auto-adaptación existentes parecen no ser adacuados debido a sus supuestos no se cumplen en infrastructuras compartidas de gran escala. La principal motivación de nuestra investigación es inerir un conjunto de principios para guiar el desarrollo de servicios auto-adaptativos de gran escala. Nuesto objetivo es proveer abstraciones de modelaje apropiadas, basadas en un marco conceptual claro, y su implemetnacion en un middleware que soporte el desarrollo de estos servicios. Tomando como inspiración conceptos económicos de mercados decentralizados, hemos propuesto una solución basada en tres principios: auto-organización emergente, comportamiento guiado por la utilidad y adaptación sin modelos. Basados en estos principios diseñamos Collectives, un middleware que proveer una solución exhaustiva para los diversos aspectos de adaptación que surgen en el desarrollo de sistemas distribuidos. La adecuación y completitud de Collectives ha sido provada por medio de la implementación de eUDON, un middleware para servicios auto-adaptativos, el ha sido evaluado de manera exhaustiva por medio de un modelo de simulación, analizando sus propiedades de adaptación en diversos escenarios de uso. Hemos encontrado que eUDON exhibe las propiedades esperadas: se adapta a diversas condiciones como picos en la carga de trabajo o fallos masivos, mateniendo su calidad de servicio y haciendo un uso eficiente de los recusos disponibles. Es altamente escalable y robusto; puedeoo ser implementado en servicios existentes de manera no intrusiva; y no requiere la obtención de un modelo de desempeño para los servicios. Podemos concluir que nuestro trabajo nos ha permitido desarrollar una solucion que aborda los requerimientos de auto-adaptacion en escenarios de uso exigentes sin introducir complejidad adicional. En este sentido, consideramos que nuestra propuesta hace una contribución significativa hacia el desarrollo de la futura generación de aplicaciones orientadas a servicios.Postprint (published version
