    Comparison of DE and PSO for Generator Maintenance Scheduling

    This paper presents a comparison of a differential evolution (DE) algorithm and a modified discrete particle swarm optimization (MDPSO) algorithm for generating optimal preventive maintenance schedules for economical and reliable operation of a power system, while satisfying system load demand and crew constraints. The DE, an evolutionary technique and an optimization algorithm utilizes the differential information to guide its further search, and can handle mixed integer discrete continuous optimization problems. Discrete particle swarm optimization (DPSO) is known to effectively solve large scale multi-objective optimization problems and has been widely applied in power systems. Both the DE and MDPSO are applied to solve a multi-objective generator maintenance scheduling (GMS) optimization problem. The two algorithms generate feasible and optimal solutions and overcome the limitations of the conventional methods including extensive computational effort, which increases exponentially as the size of the problem increases. The proposed methods are tested, validated and compared on the Nigerian power system

    Intelligent power system operation in an uncertain environment

    This dissertation presents some challenging problems in power system operations. The efficacy of a heuristic method, namely, modified discrete particle swarm optimization (MDPSO) algorithm is illustrated and compared with other methods by solving the reliability based generator maintenance scheduling (GMS) optimization problem of a practical hydrothermal power system. The concept of multiple swarms is incorporated into the MDPSO algorithm to form a robust multiple swarms-modified particle swarm optimization (MS-MDPSO) algorithm and applied to solving the GMS problem on two power systems. Heuristic methods are proposed to circumvent the problems of imposed non-smooth assumptions common with the classical approaches in solving the challenging dynamic economic dispatch problem. The multi-objective combined economic and emission dispatch (MO-CEED) optimization problem for a wind-hydrothermal power system is formulated and solved in this dissertation. This MO-CEED problem formulation becomes a challenging problem because of the presence of uncertainty in wind power. A family of distributed optimal Pareto fronts for the MO-CEED problem has been generated for different scenarios of capacity credit of wind power. A real-time (RT) network stability index is formulated for determining a power system\u27s ability to continue to provide service (electric energy) in a RT manner in case of an unforeseen catastrophic contingency. Cascading stages of fuzzy inference system is applied to combine non real-time (NRT) and RT power system assessments. NRT analysis involves eigenvalue and transient energy analysis.     A single-machine scheduling problem with multiple unavailability constraints: A mathematical model and an enhanced variable neighborhood search approach

    AbstractThis research focuses on a scheduling problem with multiple unavailability periods and distinct due dates. The objective is to minimize the sum of maximum earliness and tardiness of jobs. In order to optimize the problem exactly a mathematical model is proposed. However due to computational difficulties for large instances of the considered problem a modified variable neighborhood search (VNS) is developed. In basic VNS, the searching process to achieve to global optimum or near global optimum solution is totally random, and it is known as one of the weaknesses of this algorithm. To tackle this weakness, a VNS algorithm is combined with a knowledge module. In the proposed VNS, knowledge module extracts the knowledge of good solution and save them in memory and feed it back to the algorithm during the search process. Computational results show that the proposed algorithm is efficient and effective

    Scheduling Algorithms: Challenges Towards Smart Manufacturing

    Collecting, processing, analyzing, and driving knowledge from large-scale real-time data is now realized with the emergence of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Deep Learning (DL). The breakthrough of Industry 4.0 lays a foundation for intelligent manufacturing. However, implementation challenges of scheduling algorithms in the context of smart manufacturing are not yet comprehensively studied. The purpose of this study is to show the scheduling No.s that need to be considered in the smart manufacturing paradigm. To attain this objective, the literature review is conducted in five stages using publish or perish tools from different sources such as Scopus, Pubmed, Crossref, and Google Scholar. As a result, the first contribution of this study is a critical analysis of existing production scheduling algorithms\u27 characteristics and limitations from the viewpoint of smart manufacturing. The other contribution is to suggest the best strategies for selecting scheduling algorithms in a real-world scenario

    A multi-objective differential evolutionary algorithm for optimal sustainable pavement maintenance plan at the network level

    Sustainable highway pavement maintenance is important for achieving sustainability in the transportation sector. Because the three aspects included in sustainability metrics (environment, economy, and society) often contradict each other, maximising the sustainability performance of highway pavements is difficult, especially at the network level. This study developed a novel multi-objective heuristic algorithm to formulate sustainable highway pavement network maintenance plans considering carbon emissions (CE), life cycle agency cost (LCAC), and pavement long-term performance (LTP). The proposed algorithm is a new variant of multi-objective differential evolution (MODE) that incorporates self-adaptive parameter control and hybrid mutation strategies embedded in its framework (MOSHDE). Three state-of-the-art multi-objective heuristics, namely, the non-dominated sorting genetic algorithm II(NSGA-II), classic MODE, and multi-objective particle swarm optimisation (MOPSO), as well as the proposed MOSHDE, were applied to an existing highway pavement network in China for performance evaluation. Compared with other heuristic algorithms, the proposed self-adaptive parameter control strategy enables the automatic adjustment of the control parameters, avoiding the time-consuming process of selecting them and enhancing the robustness and applicability of differential evolution. The hybrid mutation strategy uses both exploration and exploitation operators for the mutation operations, thus leveraging both global and local searches. The results of the numerical experiment demonstrate that MOSHDE outperforms the other tested heuristics in terms of efficiency and quality and diversity of the obtained approximate Pareto set. The optimal solutions obtained by the proposed method correspond to a proactive maintenance policy, as opposed to the reactive maintenance policy commonly adopted in current practice. In addition, these solutions are more cost-effective and environmentally friendly and can provide better pavement performance to highway users over the project life cycle. Therefore, the proposed MOSHDE may help practitioners in the transportation sector make their highway infrastructure more sustainable
