Die Behandlung übersetzungsambiger Präpositionen im Transfer des VERBMOBIL-Demonstrators

In diesem Report stellen wir ein konzeptbasiertes Verfahren für die Übersetzung von Präpositionen vor, das im Transfer des verbmobil-Demonstrators integriert wurde. Ausgehend von einer Skizze der Probleme, welche sich bei der maschinellen Übersetzung von Präpositionen in spontansprachlichen Äußerungen ergeben, und einer Untersuchung des Übersetzungsverhalten von Präpositionen bzgl. ihres syntaktischen und semantischen Status wird ein konzeptbasiertes Verfahren für ihre Übersetzung entwickelt. Das Übersetzungsverfahren ist zweigeteilt: Unter Anwendung von Abbildungsregeln wird das für die Übersetzung einer quellsprachlichen Präposition relevante bilinguale Konzept identifiziert, aus welchem durch Applikation von Lexikalisierungsregeln die adequate zielsprachliche Präposition generiert wird. Abbildungs- und Lexikalisierungsregeln formulieren die kontextuellen Bedingungen, unter denen die Abbildung auf ein Konzept bzw. seine Lexikalisierung adäquat ist. Die Restriktionen sind in erster Linie an die Sortierung der Argumente der Präposition und teilweise auch an deren referentielle Eigenschaften geknüpft. Desweiteren werden Informationen über den direktionalen bzw. statischen Gebrauch der Präposition einbezogen, die bereits in der Semantikkonstruktion identifiziert werden. Die Anwendung der Regeln erfolgt durch Unifikation und Typinferenz über einer Sorten- und Relationenhierarchie

Wann werden die deutschen Präpositionen flektieren? : Grammatisierungswege zur Flexion

In diesem Beitrag geht es darum, Flexion primär über die Abgrenzung zu ihren beiden morphologischen Nachbardomänen, die Derivation und die Klise, zu bestimmen. Aus diesen beiden morphologischen Typen entwickelt sich auch neue Flexion. Mit dem Vergleich von Flexion, Derivation und Klise und mit der Frage nach der Entstehung von Flexion sollen die Ziele und Prinzipien von Flexion sichtbar gemacht werden. Der zweite Schwerpunkt dieses Artikels besteht in einer detaillierten Analyse einer sich anbahnenden Flexivierung via Klitisierung im Deutschen: Mit den Präposition-Artikel-Verschmelzungen (im, ins, zur, au/m, in'n) liegt ein Paradebeispiel derzeit beobachtbarer und sukzessive sich herausbildender Flexion vor. Diese Verbindungen sind zwar noch als Vorstufen der Flexion zu bewerten, doch läßt sich über die Untersuchung dieses komplexen Grammatisierungsprozesses diskutieren, was noch geschehen muß, damit im Deutschen Präpositionalflexion entsteht. Kapitel 1 befaßt sich kurz mit dem Begriff der Flexion, Kapitel 2 mit der Entstehung von Flexion aus Derivation und Klise. Deutsche Präpositionen im Überblick: Form, Stellung und Rektion

This paper gives a survey over the forms that can be used as prepositions in contemporary German. Apart from prototypical prepositions such as an [at, by], auf [on] or in [in], there are prepositions with the form of a content word or the form of a syntactical structure. Prepositions with the form of a content word look like adverbs (e.g. abseits [away], außerhalb [outside]), verbs (entsprechend [corresponding], betreffend [concerning]), adjectives (nahe [near], seitlich [at the side]) or nouns (trotz [despite], kraft [by virtue]); prepositions with the form of a syntactical structure look like prepositional phrases (im Gefolge [in the wake], am Rande [on the brink]). These "atypical" prepositions are of special interest for two reasons: (1) they raise the question of the delimitation of the grammatical category "preposition"; (2) unlike prototypical prepositions, they are often characterized by semantically irrelevant variations in position (preposing vs postposing) and in the choice of the governed case (dative vs genitive). These synchronic variations are documented by authentic examples from a large corpus of written German of the 90s, and are explained on the basis of a diachronic gramrnaticalization rnodel

The large literature on compliments so far reveals that the way these speech acts are uttered depends on languages, countries or cultures. A look at the compliment behaviour of Germans and Americans for instance shows that they are fond of formulaic expressions. The present paper aims at underscoring that most Cameroonians, unlike most Germans, use variable, complex and imaginative structures to express praise or admiration. Die Frist ist um. Prädikativer Gebrauch von Präpositionen

The paper analyses the structure of sentences like German Die Frist ist um (or English It's over), where prepositions without complements function as predicates. Several possible explanations for the occurrence of such forms are explored and found unsatisfactory, e. g. the assumption of elliptical constructions or of verb particles linked to the copula verb sein. Explanations limited to the German language cannot help, since the same kind of construction can be observed in other languages, too. However, this specific sentence type seems to be restricted to local prepositions, paralleling the syntactic distribution of local (but not modal, causal etc.) adverbs in this regard. Consequently, the general nature of local expressions in the languages of the world is being discussed, and the diachronic development of local prepositions in German is taken into account. It turns out that not only were all German local prepositions originally members of other word classes, but most of them still are adverbs. The astonishing fact that there is layering of different states of grammaticalization over such a long period of time explains why predicative use of local prepositions without complements is possible, while the specific treatment of these elements by itself points to the exceptional position - in cognitive terms - of local conception

Generally these reference books are considered fairly reliable. This article discusses the realibility of Duden's "Der Duden in zehn Bänden", and advises users to exercise caution when dealing with German reference books, as inconsistencies or errors will often occur. A subjective linguistic instinct among the individual authors often has a bearing on this subject
