In this report, it is argued that the most salient factor in the contemporary communicative landscape is the sheer abundance and diversity of possibilities for literacy, and that the extent and nature of students' communicative resources is a central issue in education. The text outlines the conceptual underpinnings of the Literacies for Learning in Further Education project in a social view of literacy, and the associated research design, methodology and analytical framework. It elaborates on the notion of the abundance of literacies in students' everyday lives, and on the potential for harnessing these as resources for the enhancement of learning. It provides case studies of changes in practice that have been undertaken by further education staff in order to draw upon students' everyday literacy practices on Travel and Tourism and Multimedia courses. It ends with some of the broad implications for conceptualising learning that arise from researching through the lens of literacy practices

We describe the development and implementation of a professional development course for teachers of grades 4-12 designed to increase their content knowledge in astronomy, space science, and the nature of science using interactive presentations, and hands-on and inquiry-based lessons. The course, Space Science for Teachers, encompasses the astronomy and nature of science components of the Virginia Standards of Learning for grades 4-12 [1]. In addition to increasing their content knowledge, teachers gain experience using innovative teaching technologies, such as an inflatable planetarium, planetarium computer software, and computer controlled telescopes. The courses included evening laboratory sessions where teachers learned the constellations, how to find specific celestial objects, and how to use a variety of small telescopes. Participants received three graduate credit hours in science after completing the course requirements. Space Science for Teachers was taught at the University of Virginia in Summer 2005 and 2006, at George Mason University in Summer 2006 and 2007, at the University of Virginia Southwest Center in Abingdon, Virginia in Fall 2006, and at the MathScience Innovation Center in Richmond during Summer 2005 and 2007. A total of 135 teachers participated in the courses

Most of English teachers still used the conventional teaching and only used PowerPoint presentation during the teaching process. Actually, teachers can use the more attractive media such interactive CD. This study was aimed to find out the effectiveness of developed interactive CD in teaching written descriptive text and the students’ response toward the developed interactive multimedia. This research used research and development method from Sugiyono (2009, p. 289). The data taken were the media assessment data by the experts, questionnaire about students’ response to the interactive CD, and effectiveness of interactive CD analysis. The experts’ assessment results showed that the interactive CD was scored 94% in term of media and 100% in term of subject matter. The percentage showed that both media and material from the interactive CD were categorized as very good. The result of questionnaire about students’ response to the interactive CD was at 89.16% on small-scale product trial and 91.4% on large-scale product trial with very good criteria. Both results on students’ response questionnaire showed that the interactive CD gained positive response from the students. Meanwhile, the data about interactive CD effectiveness was analyzed using T-test. The result of the T-test obtained from SPSS assisted calculation indicated that there was significant influence of interactive CD on the average score of tenth grade students' descriptive text. Overall, it can be concluded that the interactive CD is eligible and effective to be used as a learning media in school

Trying to settle in a country whose language a person does not speak is challenging in itself. Attending a computer class when a person has never touched a computer is just another hurdle to overcome. The current curriculum is not conducive to English Language Learners in Introduction to Information Technology. Microsoft Word 2007 and Microsoft PowerPoint 2007 are two of the most widely used computer programs in the school. For this reason more effective curriculum was created for ELL students enrolled in the Introduction to Information Technology class
