OCTOBER 28, 1918 AND THE CIRCUMSTANCES SURROUNDING THE ORIGIN OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA IN HISTORY TEXTBOOKS OF THE CZECHS’ NEIGHBOURS
October 28, 1918 represents one of the most important milestones of the Czech collective memory. Th e aim of the study is to capture the main traits of the explanatory refl ection of the events related to the formation of the fi rst Czechoslovak Republic in history textbooks of the selected neighbouring countries (Poland, Slovakia, Austria, and Hungary as a “historical neighbour”) and to compare them with the Czech approach, as well as mutually with each other focusing on the characteristics of educational texts which are typical for historical narration in each of the given countries. We focused in particular on the secondary school textbooks and a specifi c interpretation of the concrete themes which are accentuated in the national explanatory texts, on the one hand, or suppressed, on the other. Th e content analysis shows that there is an apparent eff ort for an objective approach, however, we can fi nd there also stereotypical views which the authors of textbooks oft en repeatedly adopt or derive from the same specialized publications. Th e objectivity of their elaboration could be achieved by the elimination of inaccuracies, the simplifying characteristics leaving aside some essential facets of the problem and by overcoming a one-sided view focused only on one situation or event and neglecting other essential historical information

Interpretation of a verbal-visual communication
In contemporary internet-dominated everyday life, ever more often one faces communications which utilise both verbal (words) and iconic (images) codes. In the article, I analyse two types of said communications: advertisements and memes. Both advertising content and memes belong to journalistic discourse. Therefore, one can analyse them using the same methods as verbal opinion texts, which require one to specify the situational background, the specific situation, the persuasive/ propaganda aim, and to standardise arguments. At the same time, memes are included in comical discourse, to analyse which it is necessary to be able to juxtapose the actual image with the presented image

Etyka budowania wizerunku w kodeksach etyki inżynierskiej
The article discusses problems of image development in selected professional engineering communities, as expressed in their ethical codes. Specific codified norms are presented and their likely effects discussed on two levels: personal and social.
The findings show, that not all of the codes of ethics solve the development problem identically, with the differences likely to cause some variability in be-havioural patterns among members of the professional societies.
The analysis suggests the need for further research and analyses as well as the standardization of codified solutions to this problem among professional engineering societies

Coursebook evaluation in foreign language education
The aim of the paper is to discuss the role of course book evaluation in foreign language education. Coursebooks are presented as the most common learning material s used in institutionalized education. First, the way coursebooks can enhance or inhibit the process of foreign language teaching and learning is addressed. Then, several types of coursebook evaluation are analyzed, along with various roles that coursebook evaluation can play in foreign language education. To emphasise the importance of evaluating coursebooks, a selection of checklists applied in the process of coursebook evaluation is discussed. The author of the paper draws on her experience as a co-author of foreign language coursebooks used in Polish secondary schools, a reviewer of coursebooks employed by the Polish Ministry of Education and a foreign language teacher trainer
