Optimal PWM control of switched-capacitor DC/DC power converters via model transformation and enhancing control techniques
Abstract—This paper presents an efficient and effective method
for an optimal pulse width modulated (PWM) control of
switched-capacitor DC/DC power converters. Optimal switching
instants are determined based on minimizing the output ripple
magnitude, the output leakage voltage and the sensitivity of the
output load voltage with respect to both the input voltage and the
load resistance. This optimal PWM control strategy has several
advantages over conventional PWM control strategies: 1) It does
not involve a linearization, so a large signal analysis is performed.
2) It guarantees the optimality. The problem is solved via both the
model transformation and the optimal enhancing control
techniques. A practical example of the PWM control of a
switched-capacitor DC/DC power converter is presented

Permission from IEEE must be obtained for all other uses, in any current or future media, including reprinting/republishing this material for advertising or promotional purposes, creating new collective works, for resale or redistribution to servers or lists, or reuse of any copyrighted component of this work in other worksFixing the switching frequency is a key issue in sliding mode control implementations. This paper presents a hysteresis band controller capable of setting a constant value for the steady-state switching frequency of a sliding mode controller in regulation and tracking tasks. The proposed architecture relies on a piecewise linear modeling of the switching function behavior within the hysteresis band, and consists of a discrete-time integral-type controller that modifies the amplitude of the hysteresis band of the comparator in accordance with the error between the desired and the actually measured switching period. For tracking purposes, an additional feedforward action is introduced to compensate the time variation of the switching function derivatives at either sides of the switching hyperplane in the steady state. Stability proofs are provided, and a design criterion for the control parameters to guarantee closed-loop stability is subsequently derived. Numerical simulations and experimental results validate the proposal.Accepted versio
Development of Multiport Single Stage Bidirectional Converter for Photovoltaic and Energy Storage Integration
The energy market is on the verge of a paradigm shift as the emergence of renewable energy sources over traditional fossil fuel based energy supply has started to become cost competitive and viable. Unfortunately, most of the attractive renewable sources come with inherent challenges such as: intermittency and unreliability. This is problematic for today\u27s stable, day ahead market based power system. Fortunately, it is well established that energy storage devices can compensate for renewable sources shortcomings. This makes the integration of energy storage with the renewable energy sources, one of the biggest challenges of modern distributed generation solution. This work discusses, the current state of the art of power conversion systems that integrate photovoltaic and battery energy storage systems. It is established that the control of bidirectional power flow to the energy storage device can be improved by optimizing its modulation and control. Traditional multistage conversion systems offers the required power delivery options, but suffers from a rigid power management system, reduced efficiency and increased cost. To solve this problem, a novel three port converter was developed which allows bidirectional power flow between the battery and the load, and unidirectional power flow from the photovoltaic port. The individual two-port portions of the three port converter were optimized in terms of modulation scheme. This leads to optimization of the proposed converter, for all possible power flow modes. In the second stage of the project, the three port converter was improved both in terms of cost and efficiency by proposing an improved topology. The improved three port converter has reduced functionality but is a perfect fit for the targeted microinverter application. The overall control system was designed to achieve improved reference tracking for power management and output AC voltage control. The bidirectional converter and both the proposed three port converters were analyzed theoretically. Finally, experimental prototypes were built to verify their performance

Tese (doutorado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro TecnolĂłgico, Programa de PĂłs-Graduação em Engenharia de Automação e Sistemas, FlorianĂłpolis, 2014.Abstract : This work presents control strategies and stability analysis for switched systemswith a proposed application to photovoltaic energy generation systems. The conditions are based on Linear Matrix Inequalities (LMIs).Initially, a general description of the photovoltaic systems is presented coveringthe following aspects: the modeling of a photovoltaic array, some commonconnection topologies, the main objectives, techniques for maximizingthe generated power, among other informations. This content is necessary forthe control design method proposed in this work.Next, a design technique for the stabilization of affine switched systems isshown. The methodology used is based on the Lyapunov?s theory for stabilityof systems, describing sufficient conditions for the proposed switchingrule design in the form of LMIs and solving them using existing softwarepackages. In the sequel, the switching strategy is extended for a class ofnonlinear systems of great interest, especially for the control of photovoltaicsystems. This class is composed of systems containing sector-bounded nonlinearities.Furthermore, a method for stability analysis of switched systemsis proposed, extending the class of switched systems analyzed by the currentliterature. Numerical examples illustrate all the approaches developed. At the end, the application of the nonlinear control techniques to photovoltaicgeneration systems is presented. The main objectives considered are thetracking of the maximum power generation, with robustness to variations ofthe input parameters of the photovoltaic array, and the delivery of only activepower to the grid. Finally, simulation results demonstrate the applicabilityof the methodology for the control of this type of system, evidencing thecompliance of the stated objectives.
Dynamics and stability issues of a single-inductor dual-switching DC-DC converter
A single-inductor two-input two-output power electronic dc–dc converter can be used to regulate two generally nonsymmetric
positive and negative outputs by means of a pulsewidth modulation with a double voltage feedback. This paper studies the dynamic behavior of this system. First, the operation modes and the steady-state properties of the converter are addressed, and, then, a stability analysis that includes both the power stage and
control parameters is carried out. Different bifurcations are determined from the averaged model and from the discrete-time model.
The Routh–Hurwitz criterion is used to obtain the stability regions of the averaged (slow-scale) dynamics in the design parameter
space, and a discrete-time approach is used to obtain more accurate results and to detect possible (fast-scale) subharmonic oscillations.
Experimental measurements were taken from a system prototype to confirm the analytical results and numerical simulations.
Some possible nonsmooth bifurcations due to the change in the switching patterns are also illustrated.Postprint (published version
Fast Linear Parameter Varying Model Predictive Control of Buck DC-DC Converters Based on FPGA
This paper introduces a novel fast model predictive control (MPC) methodology based on linear parameter-varying (LPV) systems. The proposed approach can deal with large-scale problems better than conventional fast MPC methods. First, the equality constraints given by the model equations are not eliminated to get a condensed quadratic programming (QP) problem, as the model of the LPV system changes and it will be time-consuming to reformulate the QP problem at each sampling time. Instead, the proposed approach constructs a sparse QP problem by keeping the equality constraints. Although the resulting QP problem has a larger dimension than the condensed one, it can be reformulated and solved as a system of piecewise affine equations given by the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker conditions of optimality. Finally, the problem will be solved through a Newton-method and an exact line search in a fast way. The performance is tested and compared with off-the-shelf QP solvers on the conventional buck dc-dc converter control problem both in simulations and the experiments on FPGA. The proposed methodology works well for the controller and is especially faster in comparison with some other conventional algorithms for large prediction horizons
