Obvious: a meta-toolkit to encapsulate information visualization toolkits. One toolkit to bind them all
This article describes “Obvious”: a meta-toolkit that abstracts and encapsulates information visualization toolkits implemented in the Java language. It intends to unify their use and postpone the choice of which concrete toolkit(s) to use later-on in the development of visual analytics applications. We also report on the lessons we have learned when wrapping popular toolkits with Obvious, namely Prefuse, the InfoVis Toolkit, partly Improvise, JUNG and other data management libraries. We show several examples on the uses of Obvious, how the different toolkits can be combined, for instance sharing their data models. We also show how Weka and RapidMiner, two popular machine-learning toolkits, have been wrapped with Obvious and can be used directly with all the other wrapped toolkits. We expect Obvious to start a co-evolution process: Obvious is meant to evolve when more components of Information Visualization systems will become consensual. It is also designed to help information visualization systems adhere to the best practices to provide a higher level of interoperability and leverage the domain of visual analytics

Designing an Open Virtual Factory of Small and Medium-sized Enterprises for Industrial Engineering Education
Curriculum of Industrial Engineering program must accomplish
the requirement that graduates have the ability to design,
develop, implement, and improve integrated system that include
people, materials, equipment and energy. However, it is not easy
to implement a curriculum that fosters such competencies. One of
the strategies to achieve that is using an innovative learning
media, so that the problem-based learning (PBL) can be
accustomed. In this paper, we design a web-based enterprise
resources planning. It is aimed to capture the real problem of
small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in bottled drinking
water industries. The integrated system can be illustrated as ERP
application that designed by using free open source software
(FOSS). This research aimed to utilize the application to improve
teaching methods in IE education. The result of the research can
be used to improve the competencies of IE students, especially the
abilities to identify, formulate, and solve the activities of the
business process improvement in SMEs.

Developing efficient web-based GIS applications
There is an increase in the number of web-based GIS applications over the recent years. This paper describes different mapping technologies, database standards, and web application development standards that are relevant to the development of web-based GIS applications. Different mapping technologies for displaying geo-referenced data are available and can be used in different situations. This paper also explains why Oracle is the system of choice for geospatial applications that need to handle large amounts of data. Wireframing and design patterns have been shown to be useful in making GIS web applications efficient, scalable and usable, and should be an important part of every web-based GIS application. A range of different development technologies are available, and their use in different operating environments has been discussed here in some detail
Factors shaping the evolution of electronic documentation systems
The main goal is to prepare the space station technical and managerial structure for likely changes in the creation, capture, transfer, and utilization of knowledge. By anticipating advances, the design of Space Station Project (SSP) information systems can be tailored to facilitate a progression of increasingly sophisticated strategies as the space station evolves. Future generations of advanced information systems will use increases in power to deliver environmentally meaningful, contextually targeted, interconnected data (knowledge). The concept of a Knowledge Base Management System is emerging when the problem is focused on how information systems can perform such a conversion of raw data. Such a system would include traditional management functions for large space databases. Added artificial intelligence features might encompass co-existing knowledge representation schemes; effective control structures for deductive, plausible, and inductive reasoning; means for knowledge acquisition, refinement, and validation; explanation facilities; and dynamic human intervention. The major areas covered include: alternative knowledge representation approaches; advanced user interface capabilities; computer-supported cooperative work; the evolution of information system hardware; standardization, compatibility, and connectivity; and organizational impacts of information intensive environments
NOSQL design for analytical workloads: Variability matters
Big Data has recently gained popularity and has strongly questioned relational databases as universal storage systems, especially in the presence of analytical workloads. As result, co-relational alternatives, commonly known as NOSQL (Not Only SQL) databases, are extensively used for Big Data. As the primary focus of NOSQL is on performance, NOSQL databases are directly designed at the physical level, and consequently the resulting schema is tailored to the dataset and access patterns of the problem in hand. However, we believe that NOSQL design can also benefit from traditional design approaches. In this paper we present a method to design databases for analytical workloads. Starting from the conceptual model and adopting the classical 3-phase design used for relational databases, we propose a novel design method considering the new features brought by NOSQL and encompassing relational and co-relational design altogether.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft
The Role of DBMS in Analytical Processes of the Logistic of Stock Reserves
One of main problems of corporate information systems is the precise evaluation of speed of
transactions and the speed of making reports. The core of the problem is based on the DBMS that is used. Most
DBMS which are oriented for high performance and reliability of transactions do not give fast access to analytical
and summarized data and vice versa. It is quite difficult to estimate which class of database to use. The author of
the article gives a concise observation of the problem and a possible way to be solved
Geoprocessing Optimization in Grids
Geoprocessing is commonly used in solving problems across disciplines which feature geospatial data and/or phenomena. Geoprocessing requires specialized algorithms and more recently, due to large volumes of geospatial databases and complex geoprocessing operations, it has become data- and/or compute-intensive. The conventional approach, which is predominately based on centralized computing solutions, is unable to handle geoprocessing efficiently. To that end, there is a need for developing distributed geoprocessing solutions by taking advantage of existing and emerging advanced techniques and high-performance computing and communications resources. As an emerging new computing paradigm, grid computing offers a novel approach for integrating distributed computing resources and supporting collaboration across networks, making it suitable for geoprocessing. Although there have been research efforts applying grid computing in the geospatial domain, there is currently a void in the literature for a general geoprocessing optimization. In this research, a new optimization technique for geoprocessing in grid systems, Geoprocessing Optimization in Grids (GOG), is designed and developed. The objective of GOG is to reduce overall response time with a reasonable cost. To meet this objective, GOG contains a set of algorithms, including a resource selection algorithm and a parallelism processing algorithm, to speed up query execution. GOG is validated by comparing its optimization time and estimated costs of generated execution plans with two existing optimization techniques. A proof of concept based on an application in air quality control is developed to demonstrate the advantages of GOG
