Impulsive noise removal from color images with morphological filtering
This paper deals with impulse noise removal from color images. The proposed
noise removal algorithm employs a novel approach with morphological filtering
for color image denoising; that is, detection of corrupted pixels and removal
of the detected noise by means of morphological filtering. With the help of
computer simulation we show that the proposed algorithm can effectively remove
impulse noise. The performance of the proposed algorithm is compared in terms
of image restoration metrics and processing speed with that of common

Distance Measures for Reduced Ordering Based Vector Filters
Reduced ordering based vector filters have proved successful in removing
long-tailed noise from color images while preserving edges and fine image
details. These filters commonly utilize variants of the Minkowski distance to
order the color vectors with the aim of distinguishing between noisy and
noise-free vectors. In this paper, we review various alternative distance
measures and evaluate their performance on a large and diverse set of images
using several effectiveness and efficiency criteria. The results demonstrate
that there are in fact strong alternatives to the popular Minkowski metrics
Systematic approach to nonlinear filtering associated with aggregation operators. Part 1. SISO-filters
There are various methods to help restore an image from noisy distortions. Each technique has its advantages and disadvantages. Selecting the appropriate method plays a major role in getting the desired image. Noise removal or noise reduction can be done on an image by linear or nonlinear filtering. The more popular linear technique is based on average (on mean) linear operators. Denoising via linear filters normally does not perform satisfactorily since both noise and edges contain high frequencies. Therefore, any practical denoising model has to be nonlinear. In this work, we introduce and analyze a new class of nonlinear SISO-filters that have their roots in aggregation operator theory. We show that a large body of non-linear filters proposed to date constitute a proper subset of aggregation filters. (C) 2017 The Authors. A multiresolution framework for local similarity based image denoising
In this paper, we present a generic framework for denoising of images corrupted with additive white Gaussian noise based on the idea of regional similarity. The proposed framework employs a similarity function using the distance between pixels in a multidimensional feature space, whereby multiple feature maps describing various local regional characteristics can be utilized, giving higher weight to pixels having similar regional characteristics. An extension of the proposed framework into a multiresolution setting using wavelets and scale space is presented. It is shown that the resulting multiresolution multilateral (MRM) filtering algorithm not only eliminates the coarse-grain noise but can also faithfully reconstruct anisotropic features, particularly in the presence of high levels of noise
Robust Environmental Mapping by Mobile Sensor Networks
Constructing a spatial map of environmental parameters is a crucial step to
preventing hazardous chemical leakages, forest fires, or while estimating a
spatially distributed physical quantities such as terrain elevation. Although
prior methods can do such mapping tasks efficiently via dispatching a group of
autonomous agents, they are unable to ensure satisfactory convergence to the
underlying ground truth distribution in a decentralized manner when any of the
agents fail. Since the types of agents utilized to perform such mapping are
typically inexpensive and prone to failure, this results in poor overall
mapping performance in real-world applications, which can in certain cases
endanger human safety. This paper presents a Bayesian approach for robust
spatial mapping of environmental parameters by deploying a group of mobile
robots capable of ad-hoc communication equipped with short-range sensors in the
presence of hardware failures. Our approach first utilizes a variant of the
Voronoi diagram to partition the region to be mapped into disjoint regions that
are each associated with at least one robot. These robots are then deployed in
a decentralized manner to maximize the likelihood that at least one robot
detects every target in their associated region despite a non-zero probability
of failure. A suite of simulation results is presented to demonstrate the
effectiveness and robustness of the proposed method when compared to existing
