    Deep Learning Based Thermal Image Processing Approach for Detection of Buried Objects and Mines

    Thermal imaging based mine detection technique is widely adopted due it suitability of detecting buried metallic and also non-metallic land mines in battle fields. Accurate mine detection using thermal images depends on thermal contrast between the soil and mine and it is affected by various factors such as the depth of burial; soil properties and attributes, water content in the soil, mine properties; as well as the time of day of image acquisition. With temporal temperature variations of the soil, it is difficult to distinguish and discriminate between the buried object and the background in the thermal image using the conventionally followed binary thresholding approach in gray scale. This paper presents deep learning region convolution based neural network approach to identify the buried objects in thermal images. A region interest selection using a bound box is followed for identifying the buried object in the thermal image.  From the experimental results, it is found that there is temperature variation in the thermal images of the buried objects due to the change in heat carrying capacity of the surround soil. Proposed neural network method showed 90% accuracy in predicting the target locations of buried objects in the thermal images and it can be extended for land mine detection using thermal image processing approach

    The intensity of the infrared radiation emitted by objects is mainly a function of their temperature. In infrared thermography, this feature is used for multiple purposes: as a health indicator in medical applications, as a sign of malfunction in mechanical and electrical maintenance or as an indicator of heat loss in buildings. This paper presents a review of infrared thermography especially focused on two applications: temperature measurement and non-destructive testing, two of the main fields where infrared thermography-based sensors are used. A general introduction to infrared thermography and the common procedures for temperature measurement and non-destructive testing are presented. Furthermore, developments in these fields and recent advances are reviewed

    Combined use of GPR and Other NDTs for road pavement assessment: an overview

    Roads are the main transportation system in any country and, therefore, must be maintained in good physical condition to provide a safe and seamless flow to transport people and goods. However, road pavements are subjected to various defects because of construction errors, aging, environmental conditions, changing traffic load, and poor maintenance. Regular inspections are therefore recommended to ensure serviceability and minimize maintenance costs. Ground-penetrating radar (GPR) is a non-destructive testing (NDT) technique widely used to inspect the subsurface condition of road pavements. Furthermore, the integral use of NDTs has received more attention in recent years since it provides a more comprehensive and reliable assessment of the road network. Accordingly, GPR has been integrated with complementary NDTs to extend its capabilities and to detect potential pavement surface and subsurface distresses and features. In this paper, the non-destructive methods commonly combined with GPR to monitor both flexible and rigid pavements are briefly described. In addition, published work combining GPR with other NDT methods is reviewed, emphasizing the main findings and limitations of the most practical combination methods. Further, challenges, trends, and future perspectives of the reviewed combination works are highlighted, including the use of intelligent data analysis.Xunta de Galicia | Ref.     Point to Pipe: Automatic Reconstruction and Classification of Pipes Using Lasergrammetry and Thermogrammetry for Building Information Modeling (BIM)

    Existing buildings account for 40% of global energy consumption, and two-thirds of them will be still be operational in 2050. As most of these buildings lack the needed documentation for energy upgrades, it is essential to understand and represent the current conditions of their envelopes and mechanical systems. This project proposed a skeleton-based application for reconstructing and classifying pipes in existing buildings using point clouds from laser scanners and thermal images for Building Information Modeling (BIM) applications. MATLAB and Dynamo were used to process and model this information in Revit. Initial results indicate that the application is robust to identifying pipes and connections, and that thermal images can be used to create sematic-rich models. These results can contribute to improving the capabilities of some of the commercially available software for pipe reconstruction in BIM and to expediting the digital reconstruction processes in existing buildings
