Partially ordered distributed computations on asynchronous point-to-point networks
Asynchronous executions of a distributed algorithm differ from each other due
to the nondeterminism in the order in which the messages exchanged are handled.
In many situations of interest, the asynchronous executions induced by
restricting nondeterminism are more efficient, in an application-specific
sense, than the others. In this work, we define partially ordered executions of
a distributed algorithm as the executions satisfying some restricted orders of
their actions in two different frameworks, those of the so-called event- and
pulse-driven computations. The aim of these restrictions is to characterize
asynchronous executions that are likely to be more efficient for some important
classes of applications. Also, an asynchronous algorithm that ensures the
occurrence of partially ordered executions is given for each case. Two of the
applications that we believe may benefit from the restricted nondeterminism are
backtrack search, in the event-driven case, and iterative algorithms for
systems of linear equations, in the pulse-driven case
A guided tour of asynchronous cellular automata
Research on asynchronous cellular automata has received a great amount of
attention these last years and has turned to a thriving field. We survey the
recent research that has been carried out on this topic and present a wide

Asynchronous Distributed Execution of Fixpoint-Based Computational Fields
Coordination is essential for dynamic distributed systems whose components exhibit interactive and autonomous behaviors. Spatially distributed, locally interacting, propagating computational fields are particularly appealing for allowing components to join and leave with little or no overhead. Computational fields are a key ingredient of aggregate programming, a promising software engineering methodology particularly relevant for the Internet of Things. In our approach, space topology is represented by a fixed graph-shaped field, namely a network with attributes on both nodes and arcs, where arcs represent interaction capabilities between nodes. We propose a SMuC calculus where mu-calculus- like modal formulas represent how the values stored in neighbor nodes should be combined to update the present node. Fixpoint operations can be understood globally as recursive definitions, or locally as asynchronous converging propagation processes. We present a distributed implementation of our calculus. The translation is first done mapping SMuC programs into normal form, purely iterative programs and then into distributed programs. Some key results are presented that show convergence of fixpoint computations under fair asynchrony and under reinitialization of nodes. The first result allows nodes to proceed at different speeds, while the second one provides robustness against certain kinds of failure. We illustrate our approach with a case study based on a disaster recovery scenario, implemented in a prototype simulator that we use to evaluate the performance of a recovery strategy
Scaling of a large-scale simulation of synchronous slow-wave and asynchronous awake-like activity of a cortical model with long-range interconnections
Cortical synapse organization supports a range of dynamic states on multiple
spatial and temporal scales, from synchronous slow wave activity (SWA),
characteristic of deep sleep or anesthesia, to fluctuating, asynchronous
activity during wakefulness (AW). Such dynamic diversity poses a challenge for
producing efficient large-scale simulations that embody realistic metaphors of
short- and long-range synaptic connectivity. In fact, during SWA and AW
different spatial extents of the cortical tissue are active in a given timespan
and at different firing rates, which implies a wide variety of loads of local
computation and communication. A balanced evaluation of simulation performance
and robustness should therefore include tests of a variety of cortical dynamic
states. Here, we demonstrate performance scaling of our proprietary Distributed
and Plastic Spiking Neural Networks (DPSNN) simulation engine in both SWA and
AW for bidimensional grids of neural populations, which reflects the modular
organization of the cortex. We explored networks up to 192x192 modules, each
composed of 1250 integrate-and-fire neurons with spike-frequency adaptation,
and exponentially decaying inter-modular synaptic connectivity with varying
spatial decay constant. For the largest networks the total number of synapses
was over 70 billion. The execution platform included up to 64 dual-socket
nodes, each socket mounting 8 Intel Xeon Haswell processor cores @ 2.40GHz
clock rates. Network initialization time, memory usage, and execution time
showed good scaling performances from 1 to 1024 processes, implemented using
the standard Message Passing Interface (MPI) protocol. We achieved simulation
speeds of between 2.3x10^9 and 4.1x10^9 synaptic events per second for both
cortical states in the explored range of inter-modular interconnections.Comment: 22 pages, 9 figures, 4 table
Instability to a heterogeneous oscillatory state in randomly connected recurrent networks with delayed interactions
Oscillatory dynamics are ubiquitous in biological networks. Possible sources
of oscillations are well understood in low-dimensional systems, but have not
been fully explored in high-dimensional networks. Here we study large networks
consisting of randomly coupled rate units. We identify a novel type of
bifurcation in which a continuous part of the eigenvalue spectrum of the linear
stability matrix crosses the instability line at non-zero-frequency. This
bifurcation occurs when the interactions are delayed and partially
anti-symmetric, and leads to a heterogeneous oscillatory state in which
oscillations are apparent in the activity of individual units, but not on the
population-average level
Concurrent Lexicalized Dependency Parsing: A Behavioral View on ParseTalk Events
The behavioral specification of an object-oriented grammar model is
considered. The model is based on full lexicalization, head-orientation via
valency constraints and dependency relations, inheritance as a means for
non-redundant lexicon specification, and concurrency of computation. The
computation model relies upon the actor paradigm, with concurrency entering
through asynchronous message passing between actors. In particular, we here
elaborate on principles of how the global behavior of a lexically distributed
grammar and its corresponding parser can be specified in terms of event type

Rendezvous of Heterogeneous Mobile Agents in Edge-weighted Networks
We introduce a variant of the deterministic rendezvous problem for a pair of
heterogeneous agents operating in an undirected graph, which differ in the time
they require to traverse particular edges of the graph. Each agent knows the
complete topology of the graph and the initial positions of both agents. The
agent also knows its own traversal times for all of the edges of the graph, but
is unaware of the corresponding traversal times for the other agent. The goal
of the agents is to meet on an edge or a node of the graph. In this scenario,
we study the time required by the agents to meet, compared to the meeting time
in the offline scenario in which the agents have complete knowledge
about each others speed characteristics. When no additional assumptions are
made, we show that rendezvous in our model can be achieved after time in a -node graph, and that such time is essentially in some cases
the best possible. However, we prove that the rendezvous time can be reduced to
when the agents are allowed to exchange bits of
information at the start of the rendezvous process. We then show that under
some natural assumption about the traversal times of edges, the hardness of the
heterogeneous rendezvous problem can be substantially decreased, both in terms
of time required for rendezvous without communication, and the communication
complexity of achieving rendezvous in time
