    Pareto Local Optima of Multiobjective NK-Landscapes with Correlated Objectives

    International audienceIn this paper, we conduct a fitness landscape analysis for multiobjective combinatorial optimization, based on the local optima of multiobjective NK-landscapes with objective correlation. In single-objective optimization, it has become clear that local optima have a strong impact on the performance of metaheuristics. Here, we propose an extension to the multiobjective case, based on the Pareto dominance. We study the co-influence of the problem dimension, the degree of non-linearity, the number of objectives and the correlation degree between objective functions on the number of Pareto local optima

    Visualising the Landscape of Multi-Objective Problems using Local Optima Networks

In a LON, graph vertices represent local optima in the search domain, their radii the basin sizes, and directed edges between vertices the ability to transit from one basin to another (with the edge width denoting how easy this is). Recently, a network construction approach inspired by LONs has been proposed for multi-objective problems which uses an undirected graph, representing mutually non-dominating solutions and neighbouring links, but not basin sizes. In contrast, here we introduce two formulations for multi/many-objective problems which are analogous to the traditional LON, using dominance-based hill-climbing to characterise the search domain. Each vertex represents a set of locally optimal solutions, with basins and ease of transition between them shown. These LONs vary depending on whether a point-based (dominance neutral optima) or set-based (Pareto local optima) representation is used to define mode construction. We illustrate these alternative formulations on some illustrative problems.We discuss some of the underlying computational issues in constructing LONs in a multiobjective as opposed to uni-objective problem domain, along with the inherent issue of neutrality — as each a vertex in these graphs almost invariably represents a set in our proposed constructs.Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC

    A technique based on trade-off maps to visualise and analyse relationships between objectives in optimisation problems

    Understanding the relationships between objectives in a multiobjective optimisation problem is important for developing tailored and efficient solving techniques. In particular, when tackling combinatorial optimisation problems with many objectives that arise in real-world logistic scenarios, better support for the decision maker can be achieved through better understanding of the often complex fitness landscape. This paper makes a contribution in this direction by presenting a technique that allows a visualisation and analysis of the local and global relationships between objectives in optimisation problems with many objectives. The proposed technique uses four steps: first the global pairwise relationships are analysed using the Kendall correlation method; then the ranges of the values found on the given Pareto front are estimated and assessed; next these ranges are used to plot a map using Gray code, similar to Karnaugh maps, that has the ability to highlight the trade-offs between multiple objectives; and finally local relationships are identified using scatter-plots. Experiments are presented for three different combinatorial optimisation problems: multiobjective multidimensional knapsack problem, multiobjective nurse scheduling problem and multiobjective vehicle routing problem with time windows. Results show that the proposed technique helps in the gaining of insights into the problem difficulty arising from the relationships between objectives

    Cooperation in self-organized heterogeneous swarms

    Cooperation in self-organized heterogeneous swarms is a phenomenon from nature with many applications in autonomous robots. I specifically analyzed the problem of auto-regulated team formation in multi-agent systems and several strategies to learn socially how to make multi-objective decisions. To this end I proposed new multi-objective ranking relations and analyzed their properties theoretically and within multi-objective metaheuristics. The results showed that simple decision mechanism suffice to build effective teams of heterogeneous agents and that diversity in groups is not a problem but can increase the efficiency of multi-agent systems
