    Spiking Neural Networks for Detecting Satellite-Based Internet-of-Things Signals

    With the rapid growth of IoT networks, ubiquitous coverage is becoming increasingly necessary. Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellations for IoT have been proposed to provide coverage to regions where terrestrial systems cannot. However, LEO constellations for uplink communications are severely limited by the high density of user devices, which causes a high level of co-channel interference. This research presents a novel framework that utilizes spiking neural networks (SNNs) to detect IoT signals in the presence of uplink interference. The key advantage of SNNs is the extremely low power consumption relative to traditional deep learning (DL) networks. The performance of the spiking-based neural network detectors is compared against state-of-the-art DL networks and the conventional matched filter detector. Results indicate that both DL and SNN-based receivers surpass the matched filter detector in interference-heavy scenarios, owing to their capacity to effectively distinguish target signals amidst co-channel interference. Moreover, our work highlights the ultra-low power consumption of SNNs compared to other DL methods for signal detection. The strong detection performance and low power consumption of SNNs make them particularly suitable for onboard signal detection in IoT LEO satellites, especially in high interference conditions

    Biologically inspired processing of radar and sonar target echoes

    Modern radar and sonar systems rely on active sensing to accomplish a variety of tasks, including detection and classification of targets, accurate localization and tracking, autonomous navigation and collision avoidance. Bats have relied on active sensing for over 50 million years and their echolocation system provides remarkable perceptual and navigational performance that are of envy to synthetic systems. The aim of this study is to investigate the mechanisms bats use to process echo acoustic signals and investigate if there are lessons that can be learned and ultimately applied to radar systems. The basic principles of the bat auditory system processing are studied and applied to radio frequencies. A baseband derivative of the Spectrogram Correlation and Transformation (SCAT) model of the bat auditory system, called Baseband SCAT (BSCT), has been developed. The BSCT receiver is designed for processing radio-frequency signals and to allow an analytical treatment of the expected performance. Simulations and experiments have been carried out to confirm that the outputs of interest of both models are “equivalent”. The response of the BSCT to two closely spaced targets is studied and it is shown that the problem of measuring the relative distance between two targets is converted to a problem of measuring the range to a single target. Nearly double improvement in the resolution between two close scatterers is achieved with respect to the matched filter. The robustness of the algorithm has been demonstrated through laboratory measurements using ultrasound and radio frequencies (RF).     Data driven nonlinear dynamic models for predicting heavy-duty diesel engine torque and combustion emissions

    Diesel engines' reliable and durable structures, high torque generation capabilities at low speeds, and fuel consumption efficiencies make them irreplaceable for heavy-duty vehicles in the market. However, ine ciencies in the combustion process result in the release of emissions to the environment. In addition to the restrictive international regulations for emissions, the competitive demands for more powerful engines and increasing fuel prices obligate heavy-duty engine and vehicle manufacturers to seek for solutions to reduce the emissions while meeting the performance requirements. In line with these objectives, remarkable progress has been made in modern diesel engine systems such as air handling, fuel injection, combustion, and after-treatment. However, such systems utilize quite sophisticated equipment with a large number of calibratable parameters that increases the experimentation time and effort to find the optimal operating points. Therefore, a dynamic model-based transient calibration is required for an e cient combustion optimization which obeys the emission limits, and meets the desired power and efficiency requirements. This thesis is about developing optimizationoriented high delity nonlinear dynamic models for predicting heavy-duty diesel engine torque and combustion emissions. Contributions of the thesis are: (i) A new design of experiments is proposed where air-path and fuel-path input channels are excited by chirp signals with varying frequency pro les in terms of the number and directions of the sweeps. The proposed approach is a strong alternative to the steady-state experiment based approaches to reduce the testing time considerably and improve the modeling accuracy in both steady-state and transient conditions. (ii) A nonlinear nite impulse response (NFIR) model is developed to predict indicated torque by including the estimations of friction, pumping and inertia torques in addition to the torque measured from the engine dynamometer. (iii) Two different nonlinear autoregressive with exogenous input (NARX) models are proposed to predict NOx emissions. In the first structure, input regressor set for the nonlinear part of the model is reduced by an orthogonal least square (OLS) algorithm to increase the robustness and decrease the sensitivity to parameter changes, and linear output feedback is employed. In the second structure, only the previous output is used as the output regressor in the model due to the stability considerations. (iv) An analysis of model sensitivities to parameter changes is conducted and an easy-tointerpret map is introduced to select the best modeling parameters with limited testing time in powertrain development. (v) Soot (particulated matter) emission is predicted using LSTM type networks which provide more accurate and smoother predictions than NARX models. Experimental results obtained from the engine dynamometer tests show the e ectiveness of the proposed models in terms of prediction accuracies in both NEDC (New European Driving Cycle) and WHTC (World Harmonized Transient Cycle) cycle

    Edge Artificial Intelligence for Real-Time Target Monitoring

    The key enabling technology for the exponentially growing cellular communications sector is location-based services. The need for location-aware services has increased along with the number of wireless and mobile devices. Estimation problems, and particularly parameter estimation, have drawn a lot of interest because of its relevance and engineers' ongoing need for higher performance. As applications expanded, a lot of interest was generated in the accurate assessment of temporal and spatial properties. In the thesis, two different approaches to subject monitoring are thoroughly addressed. For military applications, medical tracking, industrial workers, and providing location-based services to the mobile user community, which is always growing, this kind of activity is crucial. In-depth consideration is given to the viability of applying the Angle of Arrival (AoA) and Receiver Signal Strength Indication (RSSI) localization algorithms in real-world situations. We presented two prospective systems, discussed them, and presented specific assessments and tests. These systems were put to the test in diverse contexts (e.g., indoor, outdoor, in water...). The findings showed the localization capability, but because of the low-cost antenna we employed, this method is only practical up to a distance of roughly 150 meters. Consequently, depending on the use-case, this method may or may not be advantageous. An estimation algorithm that enhances the performance of the AoA technique was implemented on an edge device. Another approach was also considered. Radar sensors have shown to be durable in inclement weather and bad lighting conditions. Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radars are the most frequently employed among the several sorts of radar technologies for these kinds of applications. Actually, this is because they are low-cost and can simultaneously provide range and Doppler data. In comparison to pulse and Ultra Wide Band (UWB) radar sensors, they also need a lower sample rate and a lower peak to average ratio. The system employs a cutting-edge surveillance method based on widely available FMCW radar technology. The data processing approach is built on an ad hoc-chain of different blocks that transforms data, extract features, and make a classification decision before cancelling clutters and leakage using a frame subtraction technique, applying DL algorithms to Range-Doppler (RD) maps, and adding a peak to cluster assignment step before tracking targets. In conclusion, the FMCW radar and DL technique for the RD maps performed well together for indoor use-cases.     Remote Human Vital Sign Monitoring Using Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Radar at Millimeter-Wave Frequencies

    Non-contact respiration rate (RR) and heart rate (HR) monitoring using millimeter-wave (mmWave) radars has gained lots of attention for medical, civilian, and military applications. These mmWave radars are small, light, and portable which can be deployed to various places. To increase the accuracy of RR and HR detection, distributed multi-input multi-output (MIMO) radar can be used to acquire non-redundant information of vital sign signals from different perspectives because each MIMO channel has different fields of view with respect to the subject under test (SUT). This dissertation investigates the use of a Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) radar operating at 77-81 GHz for this application. Vital sign signal is first reconstructed with Arctangent Demodulation (AD) method using phase change’s information collected by the radar due to chest wall displacement from respiration and heartbeat activities. Since the heartbeat signals can be corrupted and concealed by the third/fourth harmonics of the respiratory signals as well as random body motion (RBM) from the SUT, we have developed an automatic Heartbeat Template (HBT) extraction method based on Constellation Diagrams of the received signals. The extraction method will automatically spot and extract signals’ portions that carry good amount of heartbeat signals which are not corrupted by the RBM. The extracted HBT is then used as an adapted wavelet for Continuous Wavelet Transform (CWT) to reduce interferences from respiratory harmonics and RBM, as well as magnify the heartbeat signals. As the nature of RBM is unpredictable, the extracted HBT may not completely cancel the interferences from RBM. Therefore, to provide better HR detection’s accuracy, we have also developed a spectral-based HR selection method to gather frequency spectra of heartbeat signals from different MIMO channels. Based on this gathered spectral information, we can determine an accurate HR even if the heartbeat signals are significantly concealed by the RBM. To further improve the detection’s accuracy of RR and HR, two deep learning (DL) frameworks are also investigated. First, a Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) has been proposed to optimally select clean MIMO channels and eliminate MIMO channels with low SNR of heartbeat signals. After that, a Multi-layer Perceptron (MLP) neural network (NN) is utilized to reconstruct the heartbeat signals that will be used to assess and select the final HR with high confidence

    Novel Hybrid-Learning Algorithms for Improved Millimeter-Wave Imaging Systems

    Increasing attention is being paid to millimeter-wave (mmWave), 30 GHz to 300 GHz, and terahertz (THz), 300 GHz to 10 THz, sensing applications including security sensing, industrial packaging, medical imaging, and non-destructive testing. Traditional methods for perception and imaging are challenged by novel data-driven algorithms that offer improved resolution, localization, and detection rates. Over the past decade, deep learning technology has garnered substantial popularity, particularly in perception and computer vision applications. Whereas conventional signal processing techniques are more easily generalized to various applications, hybrid approaches where signal processing and learning-based algorithms are interleaved pose a promising compromise between performance and generalizability. Furthermore, such hybrid algorithms improve model training by leveraging the known characteristics of radio frequency (RF) waveforms, thus yielding more efficiently trained deep learning algorithms and offering higher performance than conventional methods. This dissertation introduces novel hybrid-learning algorithms for improved mmWave imaging systems applicable to a host of problems in perception and sensing. Various problem spaces are explored, including static and dynamic gesture classification; precise hand localization for human computer interaction; high-resolution near-field mmWave imaging using forward synthetic aperture radar (SAR); SAR under irregular scanning geometries; mmWave image super-resolution using deep neural network (DNN) and Vision Transformer (ViT) architectures; and data-level multiband radar fusion using a novel hybrid-learning architecture.     Signal processing architectures for automotive high-resolution MIMO radar systems

    To date, the digital signal processing for an automotive radar sensor has been handled in an efficient way by general purpose signal processors and microcontrollers. However, increasing resolution requirements for automated driving on the one hand, as well as rapidly growing numbers of manufactured sensors on the other hand, can provoke a paradigm change in the near future. The design and development of highly specialized hardware accelerators could become a viable option - at least for the most demanding processing steps with data rates of several gigabits per second. In this work, application-specific signal processing architectures for future high-resolution multiple-input and multiple-output (MIMO) radar sensors are designed, implemented, investigated and optimized. A focus is set on real-time performance such that even sophisticated algorithms can be computed sufficiently fast. The full processing chain from the received baseband signals to a list of detections is considered, comprising three major steps: Spectrum analysis, target detection and direction of arrival estimation. The developed architectures are further implemented on a field-programmable gate array (FPGA) and important measurements like resource consumption, power dissipation or data throughput are evaluated and compared with other examples from literature. A substantial dataset, based on more than 3600 different parametrizations and variants, has been established with the help of a model-based design space exploration and is provided as part of this work. Finally, an experimental radar sensor has been built and is used under real-world conditions to verify the effectiveness of the proposed signal processing architectures.Bisher wurde die digitale Signalverarbeitung für automobile Radarsensoren auf eine effiziente Art und Weise von universell verwendbaren Mikroprozessoren bewältigt. Jedoch können steigende Anforderungen an das Auflösungsvermögen für hochautomatisiertes Fahren einerseits, sowie schnell wachsende Stückzahlen produzierter Sensoren andererseits, einen Paradigmenwechsel in naher Zukunft bewirken. Die Entwicklung von hochgradig spezialisierten Hardwarebeschleunigern könnte sich als eine praktikable Alternative etablieren - zumindest für die anspruchsvollsten Rechenschritte mit Datenraten von mehreren Gigabits pro Sekunde. In dieser Arbeit werden anwendungsspezifische Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen für zukünftige, hochauflösende, MIMO Radarsensoren entworfen, realisiert, untersucht und optimiert. Der Fokus liegt dabei stets auf der Echtzeitfähigkeit, sodass selbst anspruchsvolle Algorithmen in einer ausreichend kurzen Zeit berechnet werden können. Die komplette Signalverarbeitungskette, beginnend von den empfangenen Signalen im Basisband bis hin zu einer Liste von Detektion, wird in dieser Arbeit behandelt. Die Kette gliedert sich im Wesentlichen in drei größere Teilschritte: Spektralanalyse, Zieldetektion und Winkelschätzung. Des Weiteren werden die entwickelten Architekturen auf einem FPGA implementiert und wichtige Kennzahlen wie Ressourcenverbrauch, Stromverbrauch oder Datendurchsatz ausgewertet und mit anderen Beispielen aus der Literatur verglichen. Ein umfangreicher Datensatz, welcher mehr als 3600 verschiedene Parametrisierungen und Varianten beinhaltet, wurde mit Hilfe einer modellbasierten Entwurfsraumexploration erstellt und ist in dieser Arbeit enthalten. Schließlich wurde ein experimenteller Radarsensor aufgebaut und dazu benutzt, die entworfenen Signalverarbeitungsarchitekturen unter realen Umgebungsbedingungen zu verifizieren

    Deep spiking neural networks with applications to human gesture recognition

    The spiking neural networks (SNNs), as the 3rd generation of Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs), are a class of event-driven neuromorphic algorithms that potentially have a wide range of application domains and are applicable to a variety of extremely low power neuromorphic hardware. The work presented in this thesis addresses the challenges of human gesture recognition using novel SNN algorithms. It discusses the design of these algorithms for both visual and auditory domain human gesture recognition as well as event-based pre-processing toolkits for audio signals. From the visual gesture recognition aspect, a novel SNN-based event-driven hand gesture recognition system is proposed. This system is shown to be effective in an experiment on hand gesture recognition with its spiking recurrent convolutional neural network (SCRNN) design, which combines both designed convolution operation and recurrent connectivity to maintain spatial and temporal relations with address-event-representation (AER) data. The proposed SCRNN architecture can achieve arbitrary temporal resolution, which means it can exploit temporal correlations between event collections. This design utilises a backpropagation-based training algorithm and does not suffer from gradient vanishing/explosion problems. From the audio perspective, a novel end-to-end spiking speech emotion recognition system (SER) is proposed. This system employs the MFCC as its main speech feature extractor as well as a self-designed latency coding algorithm to effciently convert the raw signal to AER input that can be used for SNN. A two-layer spiking recurrent architecture is proposed to address temporal correlations between spike trains. The robustness of this system is supported by several open public datasets, which demonstrate state of the arts recognition accuracy and a significant reduction in network size, computational costs, and training speed. In addition to directly contributing to neuromorphic SER, this thesis proposes a novel speech-coding algorithm based on the working mechanism of humans auditory organ system. The algorithm mimics the functionality of the cochlea and successfully provides an alternative method of event-data acquisition for audio-based data. The algorithm is then further simplified and extended into an application of speech enhancement which is jointly used in the proposed SER system. This speech-enhancement method uses the lateral inhibition mechanism as a frequency coincidence detector to remove uncorrelated noise in the time-frequency spectrum.     The European research project DESERVE (DEvelopment platform for Safe and Efficient dRiVE, 2012-2015) had the aim of designing and developing a platform tool to cope with the continuously increasing complexity and the simultaneous need to reduce cost for future embedded Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS). For this purpose, the DESERVE platform profits from cross-domain software reuse, standardization of automotive software component interfaces, and easy but safety-compliant integration of heterogeneous modules. This enables the development of a new generation of ADAS applications, which challengingly combine different functions, sensors, actuators, hardware platforms, and Human Machine Interfaces (HMI). This book presents the different results of the DESERVE project concerning the ADAS development platform, test case functions, and validation and evaluation of different approaches.
