    Adaptive Geospatial Joins for Modern Hardware

    Geospatial joins are a core building block of connected mobility applications. An especially challenging problem are joins between streaming points and static polygons. Since points are not known beforehand, they cannot be indexed. Nevertheless, points need to be mapped to polygons with low latencies to enable real-time feedback. We present an adaptive geospatial join that uses true hit filtering to avoid expensive geometric computations in most cases. Our technique uses a quadtree-based hierarchical grid to approximate polygons and stores these approximations in a specialized radix tree. We emphasize on an approximate version of our algorithm that guarantees a user-defined precision. The exact version of our algorithm can adapt to the expected point distribution by refining the index. We optimized our implementation for modern hardware architectures with wide SIMD vector processing units, including Intel's brand new Knights Landing. Overall, our approach can perform up to two orders of magnitude faster than existing techniques

    A Heterogeneous High Performance Computing Framework For Ill-Structured Spatial Join Processing

    The frequently employed spatial join processing over two large layers of polygonal datasets to detect cross-layer polygon pairs (CPP) satisfying a join-predicate faces challenges common to ill-structured sparse problems, namely, that of identifying the few intersecting cross-layer edges out of the quadratic universe. The algorithmic engineering challenge is compounded by GPGPU SIMT architecture. Spatial join involves lightweight filter phase typically using overlap test over minimum bounding rectangles (MBRs) to discard majority of CPPs, followed by refinement phase to rigorously test the join predicate over the edges of the surviving CPPs. In this dissertation, we develop new techniques - algorithms, data structure, i/o, load balancing and system implementation - to accelerate the two-phase spatial-join processing. We present a new filtering technique, called Common MBR Filter (CMF), which changes the overall characteristic of the spatial join algorithms wherein the refinement phase is no longer the computational bottleneck. CMF is designed based on the insight that intersecting cross-layer edges must lie within the rectangular intersection of the MBRs of CPPs, their common MBRs (CMBR). We also address a key limitation of CMF for class of spatial datasets with either large or dense active CMBRs by extended CMF, called CMF-grid, that effectively employs both CMBR and grid techniques by embedding a uniform grid over CMBR of each CPP, but of suitably engineered sizes for different CPPs. To show efficiency of CMF-based filters, extensive mathematical and experimental analysis is provided. Then, two GPU-based spatial join systems are proposed based on two CMF versions including four components: 1) sort-based MBR filter, 2) CMF/CMF-grid, 3) point-in-polygon test, and, 4) edge-intersection test. The systems show two orders of magnitude speedup over the optimized sequential GEOS C++ library. Furthermore, we present a distributed system of heterogeneous compute nodes to exploit GPU-CPU computing in order to scale up the computation. A load balancing model based on Integer Linear Programming (ILP) is formulated for this system. We also provide three heuristic algorithms to approximate the ILP. Finally, we develop MPI-cuda-GIS system based on this heterogeneous computing model by integrating our CUDA-based GPU system into a newly designed distributed framework designed based on Message Passing Interface (MPI). Experimental results show good scalability and performance of MPI-cuda-GIS system

    Generalized database index structures on massively parallel processor architectures

    Height-balanced search trees are ubiquitous in database management systems as well as in other applications that require efficient access methods in order to identify entries in large data volumes. They can be configured with various strategies for structuring the search space for a given data set and for pruning it when different kinds of search queries are answered. In order to facilitate the development of application-specific tree variants, index frameworks, such as GiST, exist that provide a reusable library of commonly shared tree management functionality. By specializing internal data organization strategies, the framework can be customized to create an index that is efficient for an application's data access characteristics. Because the majority of the framework's code can be reused development and testing efforts are significantly lower, compared to an implementation from scratch. However, none of the existing frameworks supports the execution of index operations on massively parallel processor architectures, such as GPUs. Enabling the use of such processors for generalized index frameworks is the goal of this thesis. By compiling state-of-the-art techniques from a wide range of CPU- and GPU-optimized indexes, a GiST extension is developed that abstracts the physical execution aspect of generic, tree-based search queries. Tree traversals are broken-down into vectorized processing primitives that can be scheduled to one of the available (co-)processors for execution. Further, a CPU-based implementation is provided as well as a new GPU-based algorithm that, unlike prior art in this area, does not require that the index is fully stored inside a GPU's main memory buffer. The applicability of the extended framework is assessed for image rendering engines and, based on microbenchmarks, the parallelized algorithm performance is compared for different CPU and GPU generations. It will be shown that cases exist, where the GPU clearly outperforms the CPU and vice versa. In order to leverage the strengths of each processor type, an adaptive scheduler is presented that can be calibrated to schedule index operations to the best-fitting device in a hybrid system. With the help of a tree traversal simulation different scheduling strategies are evaluated and it will be shown that the adaptive scheduler can be used to make near-optimal decisions.Suchbäume sind allgegenwärtig in Datenbanksystemen und anderen Anwendungen, die eine effiziente Möglichkeit benötigen um in großen Datensätzen nach Einträgen zu suchen, die bestimmte Suchkriterien erfüllen. Sie können mit verschiedenen Strategien konfiguriert werden um den Suchraum zu strukturieren und die für ein Suchergebnis irrelevante Bereiche von der Bearbeitung auszuschließen. Die Entwicklung von anwendungsspezifischen Indexen wird durch Frameworks wie GiST unterstützt. Jedoch unterstützt keines der heute bereits existierenden Frameworks die Verwendung von hochgradig parallelen Prozessorarchitekturen wie GPUs. Solche Prozessoren für generische Index Frameworks nutzbar zu machen, ist Ziel dieser Arbeit. Dazu werden Techniken aus verschiedensten CPU- und GPU-optimierten Indexen analysiert und für die Entwicklung einer GiST-Erweiterung verwendet, welche die für eine Suche in Suchbäumen nötigen Berechnungen abstrahiert. Traversierungsoperationen werden dabei auf vektorisierte Primitive abgebildet, die auf parallelen Prozessoren implementiert werden können. Die Verwendung dieser Erweiterung wird beispielhaft an einem CPU Algorithmus demonstriert. Weiterhin wird ein neuer GPU-basierter Algorithmus vorgestellt, der im Vergleich zu bisherigen Verfahren, ein dynamisches Nachladen der Index Daten in den Hauptspeicher der GPU unterstützt. Die Praktikabilität des erweiterten Frameworks wird am Beispiel von Anwendungen aus der Computergrafik untersucht und die Performanz der verwendeten Algorithmen mit Hilfe eines Benchmarks auf verschiedenen CPU- und GPU-Modellen analysiert. Dabei wird gezeigt, unter welchen Bedingungen die parallele GPU-basierte Ausführung schneller ist als die CPU-basierte Variante - und umgekehrt. Um die Stärken beider Prozessortypen in einem hybriden System ausnutzen zu können, wird ein Scheduler entwickelt, der nach einer Kalibrierungsphase für eine gegebene Operation den geeignetsten Prozessor wählen kann. Mit Hilfe eines Simulators für Baumtraversierungen werden verschiedenste Scheduling Strategien verglichen. Dabei wird gezeigt, dass die Entscheidungen des Schedulers kaum vom Optimum abweichen und, abhängig von der simulierten Last, die erzielbaren Durchsätze für die parallele Ausführung mehrerer Suchoperationen durch hybrides Scheduling um eine Größenordnung und mehr erhöht werden können

    Large-Scale Spatial Data Management on Modern Parallel and Distributed Platforms

    Rapidly growing volume of spatial data has made it desirable to develop efficient techniques for managing large-scale spatial data. Traditional spatial data management techniques cannot meet requirements of efficiency and scalability for large-scale spatial data processing. In this dissertation, we have developed new data-parallel designs for large-scale spatial data management that can better utilize modern inexpensive commodity parallel and distributed platforms, including multi-core CPUs, many-core GPUs and computer clusters, to achieve both efficiency and scalability. After introducing background on spatial data management and modern parallel and distributed systems, we present our parallel designs for spatial indexing and spatial join query processing on both multi-core CPUs and GPUs for high efficiency as well as their integrations with Big Data systems for better scalability. Experiment results using real world datasets demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of the proposed techniques on managing large-scale spatial data

    Fast algorithm for real-time rings reconstruction

    The GAP project is dedicated to study the application of GPU in several contexts in which real-time response is important to take decisions. The definition of real-time depends on the application under study, ranging from answer time of ÎĽs up to several hours in case of very computing intensive task. During this conference we presented our work in low level triggers [1] [2] and high level triggers [3] in high energy physics experiments, and specific application for nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) [4] [5] and cone-beam CT [6]. Apart from the study of dedicated solution to decrease the latency due to data transport and preparation, the computing algorithms play an essential role in any GPU application. In this contribution, we show an original algorithm developed for triggers application, to accelerate the ring reconstruction in RICH detector when it is not possible to have seeds for reconstruction from external trackers

    Bridging the gap between algorithmic and learned index structures

    Index structures such as B-trees and bloom filters are the well-established petrol engines of database systems. However, these structures do not fully exploit patterns in data distribution. To address this, researchers have suggested using machine learning models as electric engines that can entirely replace index structures. Such a paradigm shift in data system design, however, opens many unsolved design challenges. More research is needed to understand the theoretical guarantees and design efficient support for insertion and deletion. In this thesis, we adopt a different position: index algorithms are good enough, and instead of going back to the drawing board to fit data systems with learned models, we should develop lightweight hybrid engines that build on the benefits of both algorithmic and learned index structures. The indexes that we suggest provide the theoretical performance guarantees and updatability of algorithmic indexes while using position prediction models to leverage the data distributions and thereby improve the performance of the index structure. We investigate the potential for minimal modifications to algorithmic indexes such that they can leverage data distribution similar to how learned indexes work. In this regard, we propose and explore the use of helping models that boost classical index performance using techniques from machine learning. Our suggested approach inherits performance guarantees from its algorithmic baseline index, but at the same time it considers the data distribution to improve performance considerably. We study single-dimensional range indexes, spatial indexes, and stream indexing, and show that the suggested approach results in range indexes that outperform the algorithmic indexes and have comparable performance to the read-only, fully learned indexes and hence can be reliably used as a default index structure in a database engine. Besides, we consider the updatability of the indexes and suggest solutions for updating the index, notably when the data distribution drastically changes over time (e.g., for indexing data streams). In particular, we propose a specific learning-augmented index for indexing a sliding window with timestamps in a data stream. Additionally, we highlight the limitations of learned indexes for low-latency lookup on real- world data distributions. To tackle this issue, we suggest adding an algorithmic enhancement layer to a learned model to correct the prediction error with a small memory latency. This approach enables efficient modelling of the data distribution and resolves the local biases of a learned model at the cost of roughly one memory lookup.Open Acces
