    Exploring Fog of War Concepts in Wargame Scenarios

    This thesis explores fog of war concepts through three submitted journal articles. The Department of Defense and U.S. Air Force are attempting to analyze war scenarios to aid the decision-making process; fog modeling improves realism in these wargame scenarios. The first article Navigating an Enemy Contested Area with a Parallel Search Algorithm [1] investigates a parallel algorithm\u27s speedup, compared to the sequential implementation, with varying map configurations in a tile-based wargame. The parallel speedup tends to exceed 50 but in certain situations. The sequential algorithm outperforms it depending on the configuration of enemy location and amount on the map. The second article Modeling Fog of War Effects in AFSIM [2] introduces the FAT for the AFSIM to introduce and manipulate fog in wargame scenarios. FAT integrates into AFSIM version 2.7.0 and scenario results verify the tool\u27s fog effects for positioning error, hits, and probability affect the success rate. The third article Applying Fog Analysis Tool to AFSIM Multi-Domain CLASS scenarios [3] furthers the verification of FAT to introduce fog across all war fighting domains using a set of CLASS scenarios. The success rate trends with fog impact for each domain scenario support FAT\u27s effectiveness in disrupting the decision-making process for multi-domain operations. The three articles demonstrate fog can affect search, tasking, and decision-making processes for various types of wargame scenarios. The capabilities introduced in this thesis support wargame analysts to improve decision-making in AFSIM military scenarios

    Benchmarks for fuzzy job shop problems

    The fuzzy job shop scheduling problem with makespan minimisation is a problem with a significant presence in the scientific literature. However, a common meaningful comparison base is missing for such problem. This work intends to fill the gap in this domain by reviewing existing benchmarks as well as proposing new benchmark problems. First, we shall survey the existing test beds for the fuzzy job shop, analysing whether they are sufficiently varied and, most importantly, whether there is room for improvement on these instances - an essential requirement if the instances are to be useful for the scientific community in order to compare and develop new solving strategies. In the light of this analysis, we shall propose a new family of more challenging benchmark problems and provide lower bounds for the expected makespan of each instance as well as reference makespan values obtained with a memetic algorithm from the literature. The resulting benchmark will be made available so as to facilitate experiment reproducibility and encourage research competition

    Intelligent Computing: The Latest Advances, Challenges and Future

    Computing is a critical driving force in the development of human civilization. In recent years, we have witnessed the emergence of intelligent computing, a new computing paradigm that is reshaping traditional computing and promoting digital revolution in the era of big data, artificial intelligence and internet-of-things with new computing theories, architectures, methods, systems, and applications. Intelligent computing has greatly broadened the scope of computing, extending it from traditional computing on data to increasingly diverse computing paradigms such as perceptual intelligence, cognitive intelligence, autonomous intelligence, and human-computer fusion intelligence. Intelligence and computing have undergone paths of different evolution and development for a long time but have become increasingly intertwined in recent years: intelligent computing is not only intelligence-oriented but also intelligence-driven. Such cross-fertilization has prompted the emergence and rapid advancement of intelligent computing. Intelligent computing is still in its infancy and an abundance of innovations in the theories, systems, and applications of intelligent computing are expected to occur soon. We present the first comprehensive survey of literature on intelligent computing, covering its theory fundamentals, the technological fusion of intelligence and computing, important applications, challenges, and future perspectives. We believe that this survey is highly timely and will provide a comprehensive reference and cast valuable insights into intelligent computing for academic and industrial researchers and practitioners

    An overview of decision table literature 1982-1995.

    This report gives an overview of the literature on decision tables over the past 15 years. As much as possible, for each reference, an author supplied abstract, a number of keywords and a classification are provided. In some cases own comments are added. The purpose of these comments is to show where, how and why decision tables are used. The literature is classified according to application area, theoretical versus practical character, year of publication, country or origin (not necessarily country of publication) and the language of the document. After a description of the scope of the interview, classification results and the classification by topic are presented. The main body of the paper is the ordered list of publications with abstract, classification and comments.

Examples of application domains are scheduling, production planning, resource allocation, communication networks, robotics, and bioinformatics. These proceedings contain the research papers presented at the 12th International Workshop on Constraint Solving and Constraint Logic Programming (CSCLP'07), held on June 7th and 8th 2007, at INRIA Rocquencourt, France. This workshop, open to all, is organized as the twelfth meeting of the working group on Constraints of the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM). It continues a series of workshops organized since the creation of the working group in 1997, that have led since 2002 to the publication of a series of books entitled ”Recent Advances in Constraints” in the Lecture Notes in Artificial Intelligence, edited by Springer-Verlag. In addition to the contributed papers collected in this volume, two invited talks were given at CSCLP'07, one by Gilles Pesant, Ecole Polytechnique de Montreal, Canada, and one by Jean-Charles R égin, ILOG, France.     Multi-objective Decentralised Coordination for Teams of Robotic Agents

    This thesis introduces two novel coordination mechanisms for a team of multiple autonomous decision makers, represented as autonomous robotic agents. Such techniques aim to improve the capabilities of robotic agents, such as unmanned aerial or ground vehicles (UAVs and UGVs), when deployed in real world operations. In particular, the work reported in this thesis focuses on improving the decision making of teams of such robotic agents when deployed in an unknown, and dynamically changing, environment to perform search and rescue operations for lost targets. This problem is well known and studied within both academia and industry and coordination mechanisms for controlling such teams have been studied in both the robotics and the multi-agent systems communities. Within this setting, our first contribution aims at solves a canonical target search problem, in which a team of UAVs is deployed in an environment to search for a lost target. Specifically, we present a novel decentralised coordination approach for teams of UAVs, based on the max-sum algorithm. In more detail, we represent each agent as a UAV, and study the applicability of the max-sum algorithm, a decentralised approximate message passing algorithm, to coordinate a team of multiple UAVs for target search. We benchmark our approach against three state-of-the-art approaches within a simulation environment. The results show that coordination with the max-sum algorithm out-performs a best response algorithm, which represents the state of the art in the coordination of UAVs for search, by up to 26%, an implicitly coordinated approach, where the coordination arises from the agents making decisions based on a common belief, by up to 34% and finally a non-coordinated approach by up to 68%. These results indicate that the max-sum algorithm has the potential to be applied in complex systems operating in dynamic environments. We then move on to tackle coordination in which the team has more than one objective to achieve (e.g. maximise the covered space of the search area, whilst minimising the amount of energy consumed by each UAV). To achieve this shortcoming, we present, as our second contribution, an extension of the max-sum algorithm to compute bounded solutions for problems involving multiple objectives. More precisely, we develop the bounded multi-objective max-sum algorithm (B-MOMS), a novel decentralised coordination algorithm able to solve problems involving multiple objectives while providing guarantees on the solution it recovers. B-MOMS extends the standard max-sum algorithm to compute bounded approximate solutions to multi-objective decentralised constraint optimisation problems (MO-DCOPs). Moreover, we prove the optimality of B-MOMS in acyclic constraint graphs, and derive problem dependent bounds on its approximation ratio when these graphs contain cycles. Finally, we empirically evaluate its performance on a multi-objective extension of the canonical graph colouring problem. In so doing, we demonstrate that, for the settings we consider, the approximation ratio never exceeds 22, and is typically less than 1.51.5 for less-constrained graphs. Moreover, the runtime required by B-MOMS on the problem instances we considered never exceeds 3030 minutes, even for maximally constrained graphs with one hundred agents

    Artificial intelligence is a branch of computer science, involved in the research, design, and application of intelligent computer. Traditional methods for modeling and optimizing complex structure systems require huge amounts of computing resources, and artificial-intelligence-based solutions can often provide valuable alternatives for efficiently solving problems in the civil engineering. This paper summarizes recently developed methods and theories in the developing direction for applications of artificial intelligence in civil engineering, including evolutionary computation, neural networks, fuzzy systems, expert system, reasoning, classification, and learning, as well as others like chaos theory, cuckoo search, firefly algorithm, knowledge-based engineering, and simulated annealing. The main research trends are also pointed out in the end. The paper provides an overview of the advances of artificial intelligence applied in civil engineering
