    The Intersection of Art and Technology

    As art influences science and technology, science and technology can in turn inspire art. Recognizing this mutually beneficial relationship, researchers at the Casa Paganini-InfoMus Research Centre work to combine scientific research in information and communications technology (ICT) with artistic and humanistic research. Here, the authors discuss some of their work, showing how their collaboration with artists informed work on analyzing nonverbal expressive and social behavior and contributed to tools, such as the EyesWeb XMI hardware and software platform, that support both artistic and scientific developments. They also sketch out how art-informed multimedia and multimodal technologies find application beyond the arts, in areas including education, cultural heritage, social inclusion, therapy, rehabilitation, and wellness

    Aspects of jazz and classical music in David N. Baker\u27s Ethnic Variations on a Theme of Paganini

    David Baker\u27s Ethnic Variations on a Theme of Paganini (1976) for violin and piano bring together stylistic elements of jazz and classical music, a synthesis for which Gunther Schuller in 1957 coined the term third stream. In regard to classical aspects, Baker\u27s work is modeled on Nicolo Paganini\u27s Twenty-fourth Caprice for Solo Violin, itself a theme and variations. From Paganini,it borrows aspects of melody, harmony, and articulation, not only of the theme but also the variations. In regard to jazz, Baker transforms most variations (including the theme, which in comparison to Paganini\u27s is already a variation) into distinct styles related to jazz, including spiritual, blues, swing, bebop, funk, and calypso. He alludes to these styles by imitating their melodic characteristics, rhythmic patterns, and harmonies

    The influence of music on the perception of taste

    Publisher Copyright: © 2023 Elsevier B.V.The auditory characteristics of a musical composition can be matched in a congruent manner with the basic tastes affecting the way consumers perceive them. Based on this evidence, the present study was developed to extend the understanding of crossmodal interactions between gustatory and auditory stimuli—namely, the influence of music on sweet and sour basic tastes intensity. For this purpose, two musical compositions congruent with sweet and sour basic tastes were selected. The gustatory stimulus chosen was a real food (passion fruit mousse) having these two basic tastes. Sensory tests were performed upon a participants screening using basic tastes recognition tests and familiarization with the used scale. Each participant experienced the same dessert in three different conditions, in random order: i) control, in which the dessert was tasted in silence; ii) condition A, in which the dessert was tasted while listening to sweet music, that expectably would enhance the sweet taste and iii) condition B, in which the dessert was tasted while listening to sour music, that expectably would enhance the sour taste. Results demonstrated that the same dessert was perceived differently when participants were exposed to different auditory stimuli, validating the music's influence on the tasting experience. Furthermore, it was verified that crossmodal music-taste correspondences with the sour taste were stronger and showed a significant effect. Sweet music, by contrast, did not increase the sweet taste of the dessert. However, it decreased the intensity of sour taste, suggesting a different approach to crossmodal correspondences between music and taste.publishersversionpublishe

    Becoming Camilla Urso: A Female Celebrity Violinist and the Transformation of American Musical Culture

    Camilla Urso (1840-1902) was the first nationally famous female violinist in the United States. Between 1852-1902, Urso gave over a thousand concerts in the United States, becoming a musical celebrity on par with the Swedish soprano Jenny Lind. Through her public visibility, Urso transformed nineteenth-century American violin playing from a male-dominated field into an acceptable and even fashionable field for women. Despite her nineteenth-century fame, today Urso is mostly forgotten. Over the course of six chronological chapters, this thesis presents a contextual biography of Urso’s American concert career. Utilizing archival sources, digitized newspapers, and digital mapping methodologies, I argue Urso’s life and celebrity persona shifts expected geographical, cultural, and gendered narratives of nineteenth-century American musical culture

    Comparisons of eye movements pre/post and one year after a speed reading course

    In 1995 a study on the effect of speed reading on eye movements showed a significant improvement for participants in a speed reading course. The purpose of this study is to determine if these are temporary or long-lasting benefits. By using the OBER2, an infrared monitoring device that accurately tracts eye movements, eye movements were monitored on 46 of the 59 original subjects of the 1995 study. Seventeen of the student subjects participated in a speed reading class (9 hours of speed reading instruction, with no out-of-class practice required). Twenty nine student subjects did not participate in the speed reading class. One year after the speed reading course, the speed reading group still showed the statistically significant changes in eye movements

    A student\u27s sight-reading ability directly affects the speed and quality of their learning, especially for those at the beginning and intermediate levels. Sight-reading on keyboard percussion instruments is typically very challenging for percussionists because percussion instruments are the only kind of instruments that the player doesn\u27t physically touch when they play them. The player is removed from contact with the instrument through the use of mallets. This document will cover the topics of body movements, kinesthetic sense, music pattern recognition, sight-reading strategies in different levels, and music resources for instructors. Students who develop better sight-reading skills will learn new music faster, improve accuracy on the instrument, and increase their level of self-confidence
