    CSP channels for CAN-bus connected embedded control systems

    Closed loop control system typically contains multitude of sensors and actuators operated simultaneously. So they are parallel and distributed in its essence. But when mapping this parallelism to software, lot of obstacles concerning multithreading communication and synchronization issues arise. To overcome this problem, the CT kernel/library based on CSP algebra has been developed. This project (TES.5410) is about developing communication extension to the CT library to make it applicable in distributed systems. Since the library is tailored for control systems, properties and requirements of control systems are taken into special consideration. Applicability of existing middleware solutions is examined. A comparison of applicable fieldbus protocols is done in order to determine most suitable ones and CAN fieldbus is chosen to be first fieldbus used. Brief overview of CSP and existing CSP based libraries is given. Middleware architecture is proposed along with few novel ideas

    Data communication network at the ASRM facility

    The main objective of the report is to present the overall communication network structure for the Advanced Solid Rocket Motor (ASRM) facility being built at Yellow Creek near Iuka, Mississippi. This report is compiled using information received from NASA/MSFC, LMSC, AAD, and RUST Inc. As per the information gathered, the overall network structure will have one logical FDDI ring acting as a backbone for the whole complex. The buildings will be grouped into two categories viz. manufacturing critical and manufacturing non-critical. The manufacturing critical buildings will be connected via FDDI to the Operational Information System (OIS) in the main computing center in B 1000. The manufacturing non-critical buildings will be connected by 10BASE-FL to the Business Information System (BIS) in the main computing center. The workcells will be connected to the Area Supervisory Computers (ASCs) through the nearest manufacturing critical hub and one of the OIS hubs. The network structure described in this report will be the basis for simulations to be carried out next year. The Comdisco's Block Oriented Network Simulator (BONeS) will be used for the network simulation. The main aim of the simulations will be to evaluate the loading of the OIS, the BIS, the ASCs, and the network links by the traffic generated by the workstations and workcells throughout the site

    Performance Comparison of Contention- and Schedule-based MAC Protocols in Urban Parking Sensor Networks

    Network traffic model is a critical problem for urban applications, mainly because of its diversity and node density. As wireless sensor network is highly concerned with the development of smart cities, careful consideration to traffic model helps choose appropriate protocols and adapt network parameters to reach best performances on energy-latency tradeoffs. In this paper, we compare the performance of two off-the-shelf medium access control protocols on two different kinds of traffic models, and then evaluate their application-end information delay and energy consumption while varying traffic parameters and network density. From the simulation results, we highlight some limits induced by network density and occurrence frequency of event-driven applications. When it comes to realtime urban services, a protocol selection shall be taken into account - even dynamically - with a special attention to energy-delay tradeoff.     Performance investigation of a document retrieval system on a voice-data integrated token ring local area network

    Lately, the interest in integration of voice and data on local computer networks has been on the rise. Subsequently, much research has been devoted to exploring various techniques that are implementable using the existing standards. This research has focused on the design issues in implementing a document retrieval system on a token ring network. The presence of voice and data traffic on the network complicates the protocol design further. The performance requirements of these traffic types are different. Voice creates stream traffic on a network, where as data traffic is bursty. Voice packets need to be delivered within a limited time interval, whereas the data emphasizes on error-free delivery. The necessity and the technological feasibility with off-the-shelf components has prompted this study. A possible solution is discussed in this dissertation;During the course of this research, due to the time consuming nature of simulation experiments, a need for efficient simulation techniques was felt. Thus, as a byproduct of the initial goal of protocol design, an approximate version of the regenerative simulation was developed and is discussed here in detail;Lastly, modeling difficulties encountered in forming an analytical model are listed and a performance analysis of the subsystems of interest is given

    Token bus LAN performance : modeling and simulation

    A simulation model based on CSIM, a process oriented simulated language, to analyze the performance of the Token Bus protocol is developed. Performance measures such as throughput, average delay and maximum delay per packet are presented. System performance is analyzed for different loads, number of stations, network lengths, different physical and logical distribution of the stations with packet length as a parameter. Previous studies were based on the delay-throughput analysis with no discussion on the effect of variation of the logical and physical distribution of the stations on the performance of the model which is done in the present thesis. The load is offered to the network in the form of a stream of data packets with uniformly distributed inter-arrival times. A comparison of the Token Bus model with that of a CSNIA/CD model shows that the physical distribution of the stations has a minimum effect on the performance of the model in the case of the Token Bus model but has a considerable effect on that of the CSMA/CD model

    Medium Access Control Layer Implementation on Field Programmable Gate Array Board for Wireless Networks

    Triple play services are playing an important role in modern telecommunications systems. Nowadays, more researchers are engaged in investigating the most efficient approaches to integrate these services at a reduced level of operation costs. Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) boards have been found as the most suitable platform to test new protocols as they offer high levels of flexibility and customization. This thesis focuses on implementing a framework for the Triple Play Time Division Multiple Access (TP-TDMA) protocol using the Xilinx FPGA Virtex-5 board. This flexible framework design offers network systems engineers a reconfigiirable platform for triple-play systems development. In this work, MicorBlaze is used to perform memory and connectivity tests aiming to ensure the establishment of the connectivity as well as board’s processor stability. Two different approaches are followed to achieve TP-TDMA implementa­tion: systematic and conceptual. In the systematic approach, a bottom-to-top design is chosen where four subsystems are built with various components. Each component is then tested individually to investigate its response. On the other hand, the concep­tual approach is designed with only two components, in which one of them is created with the help of Xilinx Integrated Software Environment (ISE) Core Generator. The system is integrated and then tested to check its overall response. In summary, the work of this thesis is divided into three sections. The first section presents a testing method for Virtex-5 board using MicroBlaze soft processor. The following two sections concentrate on implementing the TP-TDMA protocol on the board by using two design approaches: one based on designing each component from scratch, while the other one focuses more on the system’s broader picture
