Information-Driven Path Planning for UAV with Limited Autonomy in Large-scale Field Monitoring
This paper presents a novel information-based mission planner for a drone
tasked to monitor a spatially distributed dynamical phenomenon. For the sake of
simplicity, the area to be monitored is discretized. The insight behind the
proposed approach is that, thanks to the spatio-temporal dependencies of the
observed phenomenon, one does not need to collect data on the entire area. In
fact, unmeasured states can be estimated using an estimator, such as a Kalman
filter. In this context the planning problem becomes the one of generating a
flight path that maximizes the quality of the state estimation while satisfying
the flight constraints (e.g. flight time). The first result of this paper is to
formulate this problem as a special Orienteering Problem where the cost
function is a measure of the quality of the estimation. This approach provides
a Mixed-Integer Semi-Definite formulation to the problem which can be optimally
solved for small instances. For larger instances, two heuristics are proposed
which provide good sub-optimal results. To conclude, numerical simulations are
shown to prove the capabilities and efficiency of the proposed path planning
strategy. We believe this approach has the potential to increase dramatically
the area that a drone can monitor, thus increasing the number of applications
where monitoring with drones can become economically convenient

Centralized versus market-based approaches to mobile task allocation problem: State-of-the-art
Centralized approach has been adopted for finding solutions to resource allocation problems (RAPs) in many real-life applications. On the other hand, market-based approach has been proposed as an alternative to solve the problem due to recent advancement in ICT technologies. In spite of the existence of some efforts to review the pros and cons of each approach in RAPs, the studies cannot be directly applied to specific problem domains like mobile task allocation problem which is characterised with high level of uncertainty on the availability of resources (workers). This paper aims to review existing studies on task allocation problems(TAPs) focusing on those two approaches and their comparison and identify major issues that need to be resolved for comparing the two approaches in mobile task allocation problems. Mobile Task Allocation Problem (MTAP) is defined and its problematic structures are explained in relation with task allocation to mobile workers. Solutions produced by each approach to some applications and variations of MTAP are also discussed and compared. Finally, some future research directions are identified in order to compare both approaches in function of uncertainty emerging from the mobile nature of the MTAP
Crowdsensing-driven route optimisation algorithms for smart urban mobility
SÄtillvida kombineras i denna avhandling tvÄ mycket lovande smarta rörlighetsmöjliggörare, eng.
Foundations of coverage algorithms in autonomic mobile sensor networks
Drones are poised to become a prominent focus of advances in the near future as hardware platforms manufactured via mass production become accessible to consumers in higher quantities at lower costs than ever before. As more ways to utilize such devices become more popular, algorithms for directing the activities of mobile sensors must expand in order to automate their work.
This work explores algorithms used to direct the behavior of networks of autonomous mobile sensors, and in particular how such networks can operate to achieve coverage of a field using mobility. We focus special attention to the way limited mobility affects the performance (and other factors) of algorithms traditionally applied to area coverage and event detection problems.
Strategies for maximizing event detection and minimizing detection delay as mobile sensors with limited mobility are explored in the first part of this work. Next we examine exploratory coverage, a new way of analyzing sensor coverage, concerned more with covering each part of the coverage field once, while minimizing mobility required to achieve this level of 1-coverage. This analysis is contained in the second part of this work.
Extending the analysis of mobility, we next strive to explore the novel topic of disabled mobility in mobile sensors, and how algorithms might react to increase effectiveness given that some sensors have lost mobility while retaining other senses. This work analyzes algorithm effectiveness in light of disabled mobility, demonstrates how this particular failure mode impacts common coverage algorithms, and presents ways to adjust algorithms to mitigate performance losses. --Abstract, page iv
Emergency rapid mapping with drones: models and solution approaches for offline and online mission planning
