Coordinative Entities: Forms of Organizing in Data Intensive Science
Scientific collaboration is a long-standing subject of CSCW scholarship that typically focuses on the development and use of computing systems to facilitate research. The research presented in this article investigates the sociality of science by identifying and describing particular, common forms of organizing that researchers in four different scientific realms employ to conduct work in both local contexts and as part of distributed, global projects. This paper introduces five prototypical forms of organizing we categorize as coordinative entities: the Principal Group, Intermittent Exchange, Sustained Aggregation, Federation, and Facility Organization. Coordinative entities as a categorization help specify, articulate, compare, and trace overlapping and evolving arrangements scientists use to facilitate data intensive research. We use this typology to unpack complexities of data intensive scientific collaboration in four cases, showing how scientists invoke different coordinative entities across three types of research activities: data collection, processing, and analysis. Our contribution scrutinizes the sociality of scientific work to illustrate how these actors engage in relational work within and among diverse, dispersed forms of organizing across project, funding, and disciplinary boundaries
Autonomous agile teams: Challenges and future directions for research
According to the principles articulated in the agile manifesto, motivated and
empowered software developers relying on technical excellence and simple
designs, create business value by delivering working software to users at
regular short intervals. These principles have spawned many practices. At the
core of these practices is the idea of autonomous, self-managing, or
self-organizing teams whose members work at a pace that sustains their
creativity and productivity. This article summarizes the main challenges faced
when implementing autonomous teams and the topics and research questions that
future research should address
Beyond product architecture: Division of labour and competence accumulation in complex product development
This paper considers the trade-off between leveraging external sources of innovation by outsourcing design and engineering activities and the ability to develop internal product development competences. The trade-off arises because the division of labor within and across firms' boundaries has a crucial role in shaping competence development processes, especially because the division of labor also influences opportunities for learning by doing. In new product development projects, learning by doing appears to be both a key determinant of competence development and a difficult-to-substitute form of learning. While the division of development tasks is often considered as guided by product architecture, we show that by decoupling the decisions concerning the product architecture and the allocation of development tasks, firms can realize the benefits of outsourcing such tasks while developing new internal competences. Drawing on a longitudinal case study in the automotive industry, we also identify a new organizational lever for shaping competence development paths and for designing firm boundaries. This lever consists in alternating different task allocation schemes over time for different types of development projects. We show why this is a novel solution, what its underlying logic is, and how it enables alleviating the trade-off between the benefits of leveraging external sources of innovation and the opportunities for competence development provided by in-house design and engineering. Managing in conflict: How actors distribute conflict in an industrial network
IMP researchers have examined conflict as a threat to established business relationships and commercial exchanges, drawing on theories and concepts developed in organization studies. We examine cases of conflict in relationships from the oil and gas industry's service sector, focusing on conflicts of interest and resources, and conflict as experienced by actors. Through a comparative case study design, we propose an explanation of how actors manage conflict and manage in conflict given that they tend to value and maintain relationships beyond episodes of exchange. We consider conflicts in relationships from a network perspective, showing that actors experienced these while adapting to changes in their business setting, modifying their roles in that network. By identifying conflict with the organizing forms of relationship and network, we show how actors formulate conflict through pursuing and combining a number of strategies, distributing the conflict across an enlarged network
Harnessing Collaborative Technologies: Helping Funders Work Together Better
This report was produced through a joint research project of the Monitor Institute and the Foundation Center. The research included an extensive literature review on collaboration in philanthropy, detailed analysis of trends from a recent Foundation Center survey of the largest U.S. foundations, interviews with 37 leading philanthropy professionals and technology experts, and a review of over 170 online tools.The report is a story about how new tools are changing the way funders collaborate. Organizing Education by Drawing on Organizational Studies
This study explores how scholars researching organizations and organizing processes can use and exploit their knowledge not only in terms of course contents, but also in organizing and managing students' learning activity.A design-oriented research approach is used in order to develop grounded design principles for organizing education.By drawing on the literature about organizational design and learning, several preliminary design ideas for organizing undergraduate education are described.Subsequently, two examples of how these design ideas can be applied are discussed.The first example involves the design of an undergraduate course in Organizational Behaviour.The second example is a tool for collaboratively supervising thesis projects.The design principles grounded in these two cases are, in sum: designing education as an authentic organization; exploiting the benefits of peer mentoring and assessment; acting and delegating as a senior manager; and setting vivid standards.Finally, the contribution that organization studies can make to educational theory and practice is explored, and the role of design methodologies is discussed.organizational learning;education;organizational structure

Coordination and control in project-based work: digital objects and infrastructures for delivery
A major infrastructure project is used to investigate the role of digital objects in the coordination of engineering
design work. From a practice-based perspective, research emphasizes objects as important in enabling
cooperative knowledge work and knowledge sharing. The term âboundary objectâ has become used in the
analysis of mutual and reciprocal knowledge sharing around physical and digital objects. The aim is to extend
this work by analysing the introduction of an extranet into the publicâprivate partnership project used to
construct a new motorway. Multiple categories of digital objects are mobilized in coordination across
heterogeneous, cross-organizational groups. The main findings are that digital objects provide mechanisms for
accountability and control, as well as for mutual and reciprocal knowledge sharing; and that different types of
objects are nested, forming a digital infrastructure for project delivery. Reconceptualizing boundary objects as
a digital infrastructure for delivery has practical implications for management practices on large projects and
for the use of digital tools, such as building information models, in construction. It provides a starting point
for future research into the changing nature of digitally enabled coordination in project-based work
