    Resynthesis of Acoustic Scenes Combining Sound Source Separation and WaveField Synthesis Techniques

    [ES] La Separacón de Fuentes ha sido un tema de intensa investigación en muchas aplicaciones de tratamiento de señaal, cubriendo desde el procesado de voz al análisis de im'agenes biomédicas. Aplicando estas técnicas a los sistemas de reproducci'on espacial de audio, se puede solucionar una limitaci ón importante en la resíntesis de escenas sonoras 3D: la necesidad de disponer de las se ñales individuales correspondientes a cada fuente. El sistema Wave-field Synthesis (WFS) puede sintetizar un campo acústico mediante arrays de altavoces, posicionando varias fuentes en el espacio. Sin embargo, conseguir las señales de cada fuente de forma independiente es normalmente un problema. En este trabajo se propone la utilización de distintas técnicas de separaci'on de fuentes sonoras para obtener distintas pistas a partir de grabaciones mono o estéreo. Varios métodos de separación han sido implementados y comprobados, siendo uno de ellos desarrollado por el autor. Aunque los algoritmos existentes están lejos de conseguir una alta calidad, se han realizado tests subjetivos que demuestran cómo no es necesario obtener una separación óptima para conseguir resultados aceptables en la reproducción de escenas 3D[EN] Source Separation has been a subject of intense research in many signal processing applications, ranging from speech processing to medical image analysis. Applied to spatial audio systems, it can be used to overcome one fundamental limitation in 3D scene resynthesis: the need of having the independent signals for each source available. Wave-field Synthesis is a spatial sound reproduction system that can synthesize an acoustic field by means of loudspeaker arrays and it is also capable of positioning several sources in space. However, the individual signals corresponding to these sources must be available and this is often a difficult problem. In this work, we propose to use Sound Source Separation techniques in order to obtain different tracks from stereo and mono mixtures. Some separation methods have been implemented and tested, having been one of them developed by the author.     Multipitch Analysis and Tracking for Automatic Music Transcription

    Music has always played a large role in human life. The technology behind the art has progressed and grown over time in many areas, for instance the instruments themselves, the recording equipment used in studios, and the reproduction through digital signal processing. One facet of music that has seen very little attention over time is the ability to transcribe audio files into musical notation. In this thesis, a method of multipitch analysis is used to track multiple simultaneous notes through time in an audio music file. The analysis method is based on autocorrelation and a specialized peak pruning method to identify only the fundamental frequencies present at any single moment in the sequence. A sliding Hamming window is used to step through the input sound file and track through time. Results show the tracking of nontrivial musical patterns over two octaves in range and varying tempos

    Analysis of very low quality speech for mask-based enhancement

    The complexity of the speech enhancement problem has motivated many different solutions. However, most techniques address situations in which the target speech is fully intelligible and the background noise energy is low in comparison with that of the speech. Thus while current enhancement algorithms can improve the perceived quality, the intelligibility of the speech is not increased significantly and may even be reduced. Recent research shows that intelligibility of very noisy speech can be improved by the use of a binary mask, in which a binary weight is applied to each time-frequency bin of the input spectrogram. There are several alternative goals for the binary mask estimator, based either on the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR) of each time-frequency bin or on the speech signal characteristics alone. Our approach to the binary mask estimation problem aims to preserve the important speech cues independently of the noise present by identifying time-frequency regions that contain significant speech energy. The speech power spectrum varies greatly for different types of speech sound. The energy of voiced speech sounds is concentrated in the harmonics of the fundamental frequency while that of unvoiced sounds is, in contrast, distributed across a broad range of frequencies. To identify the presence of speech energy in a noisy speech signal we have therefore developed two detection algorithms. The first is a robust algorithm that identifies voiced speech segments and estimates their fundamental frequency. The second detects the presence of sibilants and estimates their energy distribution. In addition, we have developed a robust algorithm to estimate the active level of the speech. The outputs of these algorithms are combined with other features estimated from the noisy speech to form the input to a classifier which estimates a mask that accurately reflects the time-frequency distribution of speech energy even at low SNR levels. We evaluate a mask-based speech enhancer on a range of speech and noise signals and demonstrate a consistent increase in an objective intelligibility measure with respect to noisy speech.Open Acces

    Surround by Sound: A Review of Spatial Audio Recording and Reproduction

    In this article, a systematic overview of various recording and reproduction techniques for spatial audio is presented. While binaural recording and rendering is designed to resemble the human two-ear auditory system and reproduce sounds specifically for a listener’s two ears, soundfield recording and reproduction using a large number of microphones and loudspeakers replicate an acoustic scene within a region. These two fundamentally different types of techniques are discussed in the paper. A recent popular area, multi-zone reproduction, is also briefly reviewed in the paper.     Analysis and resynthesis of polyphonic music

    This thesis examines applications of Digital Signal Processing to the analysis, transformation, and resynthesis of musical audio. First I give an overview of the human perception of music. I then examine in detail the requirements for a system that can analyse, transcribe, process, and resynthesise monaural polyphonic music. I then describe and compare the possible hardware and software platforms. After this I describe a prototype hybrid system that attempts to carry out these tasks using a method based on additive synthesis. Next I present results from its application to a variety of musical examples, and critically assess its performance and limitations. I then address these issues in the design of a second system based on Gabor wavelets. I conclude by summarising the research and outlining suggestions for future developments

    AUDIO SCENE SEGEMENTATION USING A MICROPHONE ARRAY AND AUDITORY FEATURES

    Auditory stream denotes the abstract effect a source creates in the mind of the listener. An auditory scene consists of many streams, which the listener uses to analyze and understand the environment. Computer analyses that attempt to mimic human analysis of a scene must first perform Audio Scene Segmentation (ASS). ASS find applications in surveillance, automatic speech recognition and human computer interfaces. Microphone arrays can be employed for extracting streams corresponding to spatially separated sources. However, when a source moves to a new location during a period of silence, such a system loses track of the source. This results in multiple spatially localized streams for the same source. This thesis proposes to identify local streams associated with the same source using auditory features extracted from the beamformed signal. ASS using the spatial cues is first performed. Then auditory features are extracted and segments are linked together based on similarity of the feature vector. An experiment was carried out with two simultaneous speakers. A classifier is used to classify the localized streams as belonging to one speaker or the other. The best performance was achieved when pitch appended with Gammatone Frequency Cepstral Coefficeints (GFCC) was used as the feature vector. An accuracy of 96.2% was achieved

    Stability Analysis and Design of a Tracking Filter for Variable Frequency Applications

    The work presented in this thesis is a frequency adaptive tracking filter that can be used in exact tracking of power frequencies and rejection of unwanted harmonics introduced during power disturbances. The power synchronization process includes power converters and other equipment that have many non-linear components that introduce unwanted harmonics. This new design is motivated by the requirement of a filter that can filter all the harmonics and exactly track a rapidly varying fundamental frequency with little time delay and phase error. This thesis analyzes the proposed filter mathematically based on Lyapunov theory and simulations are presented to show the performance of the design in rapid frequency variations
