    A Parallel Hardware Architecture For Quantum Annealing Algorithm Acceleration

    Quantum Annealing (QA) is an emerging technique, derived from Simulated Annealing, providing metaheuristics for multivariable optimisation problems. Studies have shown that it can be applied to solve NP-hard problems with faster convergence and better quality of result than other traditional heuristics, with potential applications in a variety of fields, from transport logistics to circuit synthesis and optimisation. In this paper, we present a hardware architecture implementing a QA-based solver for the Multidimensional Knapsack Problem, designed to improve the performance of the algorithm by exploiting parallelised computation. We synthesised the architecture using as a target an Altera FPGA board and simulated the execution for solving a set of benchmarks available in the literature. Simulation results show that the proposed implementation is about 100 times faster than a single-thread general-purpose CPU without impact on the accuracy of the solution

    A Sule’s Method initiated genetic algorithm for solving QAP formulation in facility layout design: A real world application

    This paper considers the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP) as one of the most important issues in optimization. This NP-hard problem has been largely studied in the scientific literature, and exact and approximate (heuristic and meta-heuristic) approaches have been used mainly to optimize one or more objectives. However, most of these studies do not consider or are not tested in real applications. Hence, in this work, we propose the use of Sule’s Method and genetic algorithms, for a QAP (stated as a facility Layout Problem) in a real industry application in Colombia so that the total cost to move the required material between the facilities is minimized. As far as we know, this is the first work in which Sule’s Method and genetic algorithms are used simultaneously for this combinatorial optimization problem. Additionally the proposed approach was tested using well-known datasets from the literature in order to assure its efficiency

    Graphics Processing Unit-Based Computer-Aided Design Algorithms for Electronic Design Automation

    The electronic design automation (EDA) tools are a specific set of software that play important roles in modern integrated circuit (IC) design. These software automate the design processes of IC with various stages. Among these stages, two important EDA design tools are the focus of this research: floorplanning and global routing. Specifically, the goal of this study is to parallelize these two tools such that their execution time can be significantly shortened on modern multi-core and graphics processing unit (GPU) architectures. The GPU hardware is a massively parallel architecture, enabling thousands of independent threads to execute concurrently. Although a small set of EDA tools can benefit from using GPU to accelerate their speed, most algorithms in this field are designed with the single-core paradigm in mind. The floorplanning and global routing algorithms are among the latter, and difficult to render any speedup on the GPU due to their inherent sequential nature. This work parallelizes the floorplanning and global routing algorithm through a novel approach and results in significant speedups for both tools implemented on the GPU hardware. Specifically, with a complete overhaul of solution space and design space exploration, a GPU-based floorplanning algorithm is able to render 4-166X speedup, while achieving similar or improved solutions compared with the sequential algorithm. The GPU-based global routing algorithm is shown to achieve significant speedup against existing state-of-the-art routers, while delivering competitive solution quality. Importantly, this parallel model for global routing renders a stable solution that is independent from the level of parallelism. In summary, this research has shown that through a design paradigm overhaul, sequential algorithms can also benefit from the massively parallel architecture. The findings of this study have a positive impact on the efficiency and design quality of modern EDA design flow

    A multi-stage IP-based heuristic for class timetabling and trainer rostering

We consider a timetabling and rostering problem involving periodic retraining of large numbers of employees at an Australian electricity distributor. This problem is different from traditional high school and university timetabling problems studied in the literature in several aspects. We propose a three-stage heuristic consisting of timetable generation, timetable improvement, and trainer rostering. Large-scale integer linear programming models for both the timetabling and the rostering components are proposed, and several unique operational constraints are discussed. We show that this solution approach is able to produce good solutions in practically acceptable time

    Clustered self organising migrating algorithm for the quadratic assignment problem

    An approach of population dynamics and clustering for permutative problems is presented in this paper. Diversity indicators are created from solution ordering and its mapping is shown as an advantage for population control in metaheuristics. Self Organising Migrating Algorithm (SOMA) is modified using this approach and vetted with the Quadratic Assignment Problem (QAP). Extensive experimentation is conducted on benchmark problems in this area

    Analysis and Implementation of Room Assignment Problem and Cannon\u27s Algorithm on General Purpose Programmable Graphical Processing Units with CUDA

    General-purpose Graphics Processing Units (GP-GPU) has emerged as a popular computing paradigm for high-performance computing over the last few years. The increased interest in GP-GPUs for parallel computing mirrors the trend in general computing with the rise of multi-core processors as an alternative approach to increase processor performance. Many applications that were previously accelerated on distributed processing platforms with MPI or multithreaded techniques such as OpenMP are now being investigated to assess their performance on GP-GPU platforms. Since the GP-GPU platform is designed to give higher performance for parallel problems, applications on other parallel architectures are good candidates for performance studies on GP-GPUs. The first case study in this research is a GP-GPU implementation of a Simulated Annealing-based solution of the Room Assignment problem using CUDA. The Room Assignment problem attempts to arrange N people in N/2 rooms, taking into consideration each person\u27s preference for a roommate. To evaluate the implementation, it was compared against the serial implementation for problem sizes 5000, 10000, 15000 and 20000 people. The GP-GPU implementation achieved as much as 78% higher improvement ratio than the serial version in comparable execution time. The second case study is a GP-GPU implementation of Cannon\u27s Algorithm using CUDA. The GP-GPU implementation is compared with a serial implementation of a conventional matrix multiplication O(n3). The GP-GPU implementation achieved upto 6.2x speedup over the conventional serial multiplication. The results for both applications with varying problem sizes are presented and discussed
