    Get PDF
In recent years, localization systems for indoor vicinity using the present wireless local area (WLAN) network infrastructure have been proposed. Such positioning systems create the usage of location fingerprinting instead of direction or time of arrival techniques for deciding the location of mobile users. However experimental study associated to such localization systems have been proposed, high attenuation and signal scattering related to greater density of wall attenuation still affecting the indoor positioning performance. This paper presents an analytical model for minimizing high signal attenuation effect for WLAN fingerprinting indoor positioning systems. The model employs the probabilistic algorithm that using signal relation method

Pre-print versionThis paper presents results from comparing different Wi-Fi fingerprinting algorithms on the same private dataset. The algorithms where realized by independent teams in the frame of the off-site track of the EvAAL-ETRI Indoor Localization Competition which was part of the Sixth International Conference on Indoor Positioning and Indoor Navigation (IPIN 2015). Competitors designed and validated their algorithms against the publicly available UJIIndoorLoc database which contains a huge reference- and validation data set. All competing systems were evaluated using the mean error in positioning, with penalties, using a private test dataset. The authors believe that this is the first work in which Wi-Fi fingerprinting algorithm results delivered by several independent and competing teams are fairly compared under the same evaluation conditions. The analysis also comprises a combined approach: Results indicate that the competing systems where complementary, since an ensemble that combines three competing methods reported the overall best results. We would like to thank Francesco Potortì, Paolo Barsocchi, Michele Girolami and Kyle O’Keefe for their valuable help in organizing and spread the EVAALETRI competition and the off-site track. We would also like to thank the TPC members Machaj Juraj, Christos Laoudias, Antoni Pérez-Navarro and Robert Piché for their valuable comments, suggestions and reviews. An accurate and reliable Indoor Positioning System (IPS) applicable to most indoor scenarios has been sought for many years. The number of technologies, techniques, and approaches in general used in IPS proposals is remarkable. Such diversity, coupled with the lack of strict and verifiable evaluations, leads to difficulties for appreciating the true value of most proposals. This paper provides a meta-review that performed a comprehensive compilation of 62 survey papers in the area of indoor positioning. The paper provides the reader with an introduction to IPS and the different technologies, techniques, and some methods commonly employed. The introduction is supported by consensus found in the selected surveys and referenced using them. Thus, the meta-review allows the reader to inspect the IPS current state at a glance and serve as a guide for the reader to easily find further details on each technology used in IPS. The analyses of the meta-review contributed with insights on the abundance and academic significance of published IPS proposals using the criterion of the number of citations. Moreover, 75 works are identified as relevant works in the research topic from a selection of about 4000 works cited in the analyzed surveys

A survey of deep learning approaches for WiFi-based indoor positioning

    Get PDF
One of the most popular approaches for indoor positioning is WiFi fingerprinting, which has been intrinsically tackled as a traditional machine learning problem since the beginning, to achieve a few metres of accuracy on average. In recent years, deep learning has emerged as an alternative approach, with a large number of publications reporting sub-metre positioning accuracy. Therefore, this survey presents a timely, comprehensive review of the most interesting deep learning methods being used for WiFi fingerprinting. In doing so, we aim to identify the most efficient neural networks, under a variety of positioning evaluation metrics for different readers. We will demonstrate that despite the new emerging WiFi signal measures (i.e. CSI and RTT), RSS produces competitive performances under deep learning. We will also show that simple neural networks outperform more complex ones in certain environments

Comprehensive analysis of distance and similarity measures for Wi-Fi fingerprinting indoor positioning systems

Recent advances in indoor positioning systems led to a business interest in those applications and services where a precise localization is crucial. Wi-Fi fingerprinting based on machine learning and expert systems are commonly used in the literature. They compare a current fingerprint to a database of fingerprints, and then return the most similar one/ones according to: 1) a distance function, 2) a data representation method for received signal strength values, and 3) a thresholding strategy. However, most of the previous works simply use the Euclidean distance with the raw unprocessed data. There is not any previous work that studies which is the best distance function, which is the best way of representing the data and which is the effect of applying thresholding. In this paper, we present a comprehensive study using 51 distance metrics, 4 alternatives to represent the raw data (2 of them proposed by us), a thresholding based on the RSS values and the public UJIIndoorLoc database. The results shown in this paper demonstrate that researchers and developers should take into account the conclusions arisen in this work in order to improve the accuracy of their systems. The IPSs based on k-NN are improved by just selecting the appropriate configuration (mainly distance function and data representation). In the best case, 13-NN with Sørensen distance and the powed data representation, the error in determining the place (building and floor) has been reduced in more than a 50% and the positioning accuracy has been increased in 1.7 m with respect to the 1-NN with Euclidean distance and raw data commonly used in the literature. Moreover, our experiments also demonstrate that thresholding should not be applied in multi-building and multi-floor environments

In this paper a new location indoor system is presented, which shows the position and orientation of the user in closed environments, as well as the optimal route to his destination through location tags. This system is called Labelee, and it makes easier the interaction between users and devices through QR code scanning or by NFC tag reading, because this technology is increasingly common in the latest smartphones. With this system, users could locate themselves into an enclosure with less interaction

The oil and gas industry deals with various challenges, and one of it is to comply with frequently changing environmental regulations in monitoring and management system. In this project, the focus will be in the necessity for oil and gas industry to monitor the movement of their employees especially for whom that were conducting tasks in remote areas to wisely optimise the runway resources while simultaneously reaching the needs of delivery schedules. To oversee the workers position, a comprehensive floor mapping system that indicates the real-time status of individuals is required on 24/7 basis. Therefore, the use of beacon system with IOT platform will be applied in this project. The concept is such as the employees are required to carry a customised beacon badge, for this badge will communicate valuable information to the Bluetooth gateway that coordinates the collected information to a cloud-based system for floor mapping process. In other words, an investigation and implementation of a beacon system through a Bluetooth gateway to a cloud-based system in accordance with IEEE 802.15 standard will work out
