Non-intrusive on-the-fly data race detection using execution replay
This paper presents a practical solution for detecting data races in parallel
programs. The solution consists of a combination of execution replay (RecPlay)
with automatic on-the-fly data race detection. This combination enables us to
perform the data race detection on an unaltered execution (almost no probe
effect). Furthermore, the usage of multilevel bitmaps and snooped matrix clocks
limits the amount of memory used. As the record phase of RecPlay is highly
efficient, there is no need to switch it off, hereby eliminating the

Record and replay under relaxed consistency
In the area of debugging parallel executions, record and replay is a technique that allows deterministic debugging even in the presence of data races. It is useful as most programmers are used to re-executing programs to find bugs.
However, very little is known about how the consistency model affects record and replay. Previous work only applied to very strong consistency models, or to a specific architecture of shared memory. Very little theoretical basis has been developed for record and replay. This thesis makes three contributions:
• An algorithm that records the minimum record for record and replay under causal consistency.
• A demonstration that guaranteeing progress for a given replay mechanism can depend on the consistency model.
• A demonstration that heterogeneous consistency record and replay is possible, that is, it is possible to record an execution on one consistency model and replay it on another
A Survey of Fault-Tolerance and Fault-Recovery Techniques in Parallel Systems
Supercomputing systems today often come in the form of large numbers of
commodity systems linked together into a computing cluster. These systems, like
any distributed system, can have large numbers of independent hardware
components cooperating or collaborating on a computation. Unfortunately, any of
this vast number of components can fail at any time, resulting in potentially
erroneous output. In order to improve the robustness of supercomputing
applications in the presence of failures, many techniques have been developed
to provide resilience to these kinds of system faults. This survey provides an

Causal-Consistent Replay Debugging for Message Passing Programs
Debugging of concurrent systems is a tedious and error-prone activity. A main issue is that there is no guarantee that a bug that appears in the original computation is replayed inside the debugger. This problem is usually tackled by so-called replay debugging, which allows the user to record a program execution and replay it inside the debugger. In this paper, we present a novel technique for replay debugging that we call controlled causal-consistent replay. Controlled causal-consistent replay allows the user to record a program execution and, in contrast to traditional replay debuggers, to reproduce a visible misbehavior inside the debugger including all and only its causes. In this way, the user is not distracted by the actions of other, unrelated processes
Formal Methods for Constraint-Based Testing and Reversible Debugging in Erlang
Tesis por compendio[ES] Erlang es un lenguaje de programación funcional con concurrencia mediante paso de mensajes basado en el modelo de actores. Éstas y otras caracterÃsticas lo hacen especialmente adecuado para aplicaciones distribuidas en tiempo real acrÃtico. En los últimos años, la popularidad de Erlang ha aumentado debido a la demanda de servicios concurrentes.
No obstante, desarrollar sistemas Erlang libres de errores es un reto considerable. A pesar de que Erlang evita muchos problemas por diseño (por ejemplo, puntos muertos), algunos otros problemas pueden aparecer. En este contexto, las técnicas de testing y depuración basadas en métodos formales pueden ser útiles para detectar, localizar y arreglar errores de programación en Erlang.
En esta tesis proponemos varios métodos para testing y depuración en Erlang. En particular, estos métodos están basados en modelos semánticos para concolic testing, pruebas basadas en propiedades, depuración reversible con consistencia causal y repetición reversible con consistencia causal de programas Erlang. Además, probamos formalmente las principales propiedades de nuestras propuestas y diseñamos herramientas de código abierto que implementan estos métodos.[CA] Erlang és un llenguatge de programació funcional amb concurrència mitjançant pas de missatges basat en el model d'actors. Estes i altres caracterÃstiques el fan especialment adequat per a aplicacions distribuïdes en temps real acrÃtic. En els últims anys, la popularitat d'Erlang ha augmentat degut a la demanda de servicis concurrents.
No obstant, desenvolupar sistemes Erlang lliures d'errors és un repte considerable. Encara que Erlang evita molts problemes per disseny (per exemple, punts morts), alguns altres problemes poden aparéixer. En este context, les tècniques de testing y depuració basades en mètodes formals poden ser útils per a detectar, localitzar y arreglar errors de programació en Erlang.
En esta tesis proposem diversos mètodes per a testing i depuració en Erlang. En particular, estos mètodes estan basats en models semà ntics per a concolic testing, testing basat en propietats, depuració reversible amb consistència causal i repetició reversible amb consistència causal de programes Erlang. A més, provem formalment les principals propietats de les nostres propostes i dissenyem ferramentes de codi obert que implementen estos mètodes.[EN] Erlang is a message-passing concurrent, functional programming language based on the actor model. These and other features make it especially appropriate for distributed, soft real-time applications. In the recent years, Erlang's popularity has increased due to the demand for concurrent services.
However, developing error-free systems in Erlang is quite a challenge. Although Erlang avoids many problems by design (e.g., deadlocks), some other problems may appear. Here, testing and debugging techniques based on formal methods may be helpful to detect, locate and fix programming errors in Erlang.
In this thesis we propose several methods for testing and debugging in Erlang. In particular, these methods are based on semantics models for concolic testing, property-based testing, causal-consistent reversible debugging and causal-consistent replay debugging of Erlang programs. Deterministic, Mutable, and Distributed Record-Replay for Operating Systems and Database Systems
Application record and replay is the ability to record application execution and replay it at a later time. Record-replay has many use cases including diagnosing and debugging applications by capturing and reproducing hard to find bugs, providing transparent application fault tolerance by maintaining a live replica of a running program, and offline instrumentation that would be too costly to run in a production environment. Different record-replay systems may offer different levels of replay faithfulness, the strongest level being deterministic replay which guarantees an identical reenactment of the original execution. Such a guarantee requires capturing all sources of nondeterminism during the recording phase. In the general case, such record-replay systems can dramatically hinder application performance, rendering them unpractical in certain application domains. Furthermore, various use cases are incompatible with strictly replaying the original execution. For example, in a primary-secondary database scenario, the secondary database would be unable to serve additional traffic while being replicated. No record-replay system fit all use cases.
This dissertation shows how to make deterministic record-replay fast and efficient, how broadening replay semantics can enable powerful new use cases, and how choosing the right level of abstraction for record-replay can support distributed and heterogeneous database replication with little effort.
We explore four record-replay systems with different semantics enabling different use cases. We first present Scribe, an OS-level deterministic record-replay mechanism that support multi-process applications on multi-core systems. One of the main challenge is to record the interaction of threads running on different CPU cores in an efficient manner. Scribe introduces two new lightweight OS mechanisms, rendezvous point and sync points, to efficiently record nondeterministic interactions such as related system calls, signals, and shared memory accesses. Scribe allows the capture and replication of hard to find bugs to facilitate debugging and serves as a solid foundation for our two following systems.
We then present RacePro, a process race detection system to improve software correctness. Process races occur when multiple processes access shared operating system resources, such as files, without proper synchronization. Detecting process races is difficult due to the elusive nature of these bugs, and the heterogeneity of frameworks involved in such bugs. RacePro is the first tool to detect such process races. RacePro records application executions in deployed systems, allowing offline race detection by analyzing the previously recorded log. RacePro then replays the application execution and forces the manifestation of detected races to check their effect on the application. Upon failure, RacePro reports potentially harmful races to developers.
Third, we present Dora, a mutable record-replay system which allows a recorded execution of an application to be replayed with a modified version of the application. Mutable record-replay provides a number of benefits for reproducing, diagnosing, and fixing software bugs. Given a recording and a modified application, finding a mutable replay is challenging, and undecidable in the general case. Despite the difficulty of the problem, we show a very simple but effective algorithm to search for suitable replays.
Lastly, we present Synapse, a heterogeneous database replication system designed for Web applications. Web applications are increasingly built using a service-oriented architecture that integrates services powered by a variety of databases. Often, the same data, needed by multiple services, must be replicated across different databases and kept in sync. Unfortunately, these databases use vendor specific data replication engines which are not compatible with each other. To solve this challenge, Synapse operates at the application level to access a unified data representation through object relational mappers. Additionally, Synapse leverages application semantics to replicate data with good consistency semantics using mechanisms similar to Scribe
