Towards a Holistic Integration of Spreadsheets with Databases: A Scalable Storage Engine for Presentational Data Management
Spreadsheet software is the tool of choice for interactive ad-hoc data
management, with adoption by billions of users. However, spreadsheets are not
scalable, unlike database systems. On the other hand, database systems, while
highly scalable, do not support interactivity as a first-class primitive. We
are developing DataSpread, to holistically integrate spreadsheets as a
front-end interface with databases as a back-end datastore, providing
scalability to spreadsheets, and interactivity to databases, an integration we
term presentational data management (PDM). In this paper, we make a first step
towards this vision: developing a storage engine for PDM, studying how to
flexibly represent spreadsheet data within a database and how to support and
maintain access by position. We first conduct an extensive survey of
spreadsheet use to motivate our functional requirements for a storage engine
for PDM. We develop a natural set of mechanisms for flexibly representing
spreadsheet data and demonstrate that identifying the optimal representation is
NP-Hard; however, we develop an efficient approach to identify the optimal
representation from an important and intuitive subclass of representations. We
extend our mechanisms with positional access mechanisms that don't suffer from
cascading update issues, leading to constant time access and modification
performance. We evaluate these representations on a workload of typical
spreadsheets and spreadsheet operations, providing up to 20% reduction in
storage, and up to 50% reduction in formula evaluation time
XML content warehousing: Improving sociological studies of mailing lists and web data
In this paper, we present the guidelines for an XML-based approach for the
sociological study of Web data such as the analysis of mailing lists or
databases available online. The use of an XML warehouse is a flexible solution
for storing and processing this kind of data. We propose an implemented
solution and show possible applications with our case study of profiles of
experts involved in W3C standard-setting activity. We illustrate the
sociological use of semi-structured databases by presenting our XML Schema for
mailing-list warehousing. An XML Schema allows many adjunctions or crossings of
data sources, without modifying existing data sets, while allowing possible
structural evolution. We also show that the existence of hidden data implies
increased complexity for traditional SQL users. XML content warehousing allows
altogether exhaustive warehousing and recursive queries through contents, with
far less dependence on the initial storage. We finally present the possibility
of exporting the data stored in the warehouse to commonly-used advanced
software devoted to sociological analysis
Survey over Existing Query and Transformation Languages
A widely acknowledged obstacle for realizing the vision of the Semantic Web is the inability
of many current Semantic Web approaches to cope with data available in such diverging
representation formalisms as XML, RDF, or Topic Maps. A common query language is the first
step to allow transparent access to data in any of these formats. To further the understanding
of the requirements and approaches proposed for query languages in the conventional as well
as the Semantic Web, this report surveys a large number of query languages for accessing
XML, RDF, or Topic Maps. This is the first systematic survey to consider query languages from
all these areas. From the detailed survey of these query languages, a common classification
scheme is derived that is useful for understanding and differentiating languages within and
among all three areas
