An Economic Model-Based Predictive Control to Manage the Users' Thermal Comfort in a Building

The goal of maintaining users' thermal comfort conditions in indoor environments may require complex regulation procedures and a proper energy management. This problem is being widely analyzed, since it has a direct effect on users' productivity. This paper presents an economic model-based predictive control (MPC) whose main strength is the use of the day-ahead price (DAP) in order to predict the energy consumption associated with the heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC). In this way, the control system is able to maintain a high thermal comfort level by optimizing the use of the HVAC system and to reduce, at the same time, the energy consumption associated with it, as much as possible. Later, the performance of the proposed control system is tested through simulations with a non-linear model of a bioclimatic building room. Several simulation scenarios are considered as a test-bed. From the obtained results, it is possible to conclude that the control system has a good behavior in several situations, i.e., it can reach the users' thermal comfort for the analyzed situations, whereas the HVAC use is adjusted through the DAP; therefore, the energy savings associated with the HVAC is increased.Spanish Ministry of Science and Innovation [DPI2014-56364-C2-1-R]; EU-ERDF funds; Competitiveness and ERDF funds; Fundacion Iberdrola Espana; Portuguese Foundation for Science & Technology, through IDMEC, under LAETA [ID/EMS/50022/2013

Model Predictive Control for Signal Temporal Logic Specification

    Get PDF
We present a mathematical programming-based method for model predictive control of cyber-physical systems subject to signal temporal logic (STL) specifications. We describe the use of STL to specify a wide range of properties of these systems, including safety, response and bounded liveness. For synthesis, we encode STL specifications as mixed integer-linear constraints on the system variables in the optimization problem at each step of a receding horizon control framework. We prove correctness of our algorithms, and present experimental results for controller synthesis for building energy and climate control

Economic MPC of Nonlinear Systems with Non-Monotonic Lyapunov Functions and Its Application to HVAC Control

This paper proposes a Lyapunov-based economic MPC scheme for nonlinear sytems with non-monotonic Lyapunov functions. Relaxed Lyapunov-based constraints are used in the MPC formulation to improve the economic performance. These constraints will enforce a Lyapunov decrease after every few steps. Recursive feasibility and asymptotical convergence to the steady state can be achieved using Lyapunov-like stability analysis. The proposed economic MPC can be applied to minimize energy consumption in HVAC control of commercial buildings. The Lyapunov-based constraints in the online MPC problem enable the tracking of the desired set-point temperature. The performance is demonstrated by a virtual building composed of two adjacent zones

7TH IFAC SYMPOSIUM ON ADVANCES IN CONTROL EDUCATION. 21/06/2006. MADRIDThis paper presents a methodology to introduce the control of dead-time processes using a simple and intuitive predictive approach. A trivial solutionfor the control of a process with a dead-time is first proposed. From this strategythe idea of the predictor based controller is derived. Open-loop predictors andclosed-loop ones are then used to analyze the obtained solution. A simple tuningof the proposed structure for a first order plus dead-time process together with apolynomial approximation of the dead-time allows to derive apidcontroller. Thus, the approach based on the idea of prediction can be used to interpret the use of apidto control a dead-time process. It is illustrated how the performance of thepidcontroller is limited by the modelling error introduced in the approximation. Thepresented approach gives a measurement of the achievable performance. Severalsimulation examples illustrate the results.Ministerio de Ciencia y Tecnología DPI 2005-0456
