    Cooperative Navigation for Low-bandwidth Mobile Acoustic Networks.

    This thesis reports on the design and validation of estimation and planning algorithms for underwater vehicle cooperative localization. While attitude and depth are easily instrumented with bounded-error, autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) have no internal sensor that directly observes XY position. The global positioning system (GPS) and other radio-based navigation techniques are not available because of the strong attenuation of electromagnetic signals in seawater. The navigation algorithms presented herein fuse local body-frame rate and attitude measurements with range observations between vehicles within a decentralized architecture. The acoustic communication channel is both unreliable and low bandwidth, precluding many state-of-the-art terrestrial cooperative navigation algorithms. We exploit the underlying structure of a post-process centralized estimator in order to derive two real-time decentralized estimation frameworks. First, the origin state method enables a client vehicle to exactly reproduce the corresponding centralized estimate within a server-to-client vehicle network. Second, a graph-based navigation framework produces an approximate reconstruction of the centralized estimate onboard each vehicle. Finally, we present a method to plan a locally optimal server path to localize a client vehicle along a desired nominal trajectory. The planning algorithm introduces a probabilistic channel model into prior Gaussian belief space planning frameworks. In summary, cooperative localization reduces XY position error growth within underwater vehicle networks. Moreover, these methods remove the reliance on static beacon networks, which do not scale to large vehicle networks and limit the range of operations. Each proposed localization algorithm was validated in full-scale AUV field trials.     Mapping, planning and exploration with Pose SLAM

    This thesis reports research on mapping, path planning, and autonomous exploration. These are classical problems in robotics, typically studied independently, and here we link such problems by framing them within a common SLAM approach, adopting Pose SLAM as the basic state estimation machinery. The main contribution of this thesis is an approach that allows a mobile robot to plan a path using the map it builds with Pose SLAM and to select the appropriate actions to autonomously construct this map. Pose SLAM is the variant of SLAM where only the robot trajectory is estimated and where landmarks are only used to produce relative constraints between robot poses. In Pose SLAM, observations come in the form of relative-motion measurements between robot poses. With regards to extending the original Pose SLAM formulation, this thesis studies the computation of such measurements when they are obtained with stereo cameras and develops the appropriate noise propagation models for such case. Furthermore, the initial formulation of Pose SLAM assumes poses in SE(2) and in this thesis we extend this formulation to SE(3), parameterizing rotations either with Euler angles and quaternions. We also introduce a loop closure test that exploits the information from the filter using an independent measure of information content between poses. In the application domain, we present a technique to process the 3D volumetric maps obtained with this SLAM methodology, but with laser range scanning as the sensor modality, to derive traversability maps. Aside from these extensions to Pose SLAM, the core contribution of the thesis is an approach for path planning that exploits the modeled uncertainties in Pose SLAM to search for the path in the pose graph with the lowest accumulated robot pose uncertainty, i.e., the path that allows the robot to navigate to a given goal with the least probability of becoming lost. An added advantage of the proposed path planning approach is that since Pose SLAM is agnostic with respect to the sensor modalities used, it can be used in different environments and with different robots, and since the original pose graph may come from a previous mapping session, the paths stored in the map already satisfy constraints not easy modeled in the robot controller, such as the existence of restricted regions, or the right of way along paths. The proposed path planning methodology has been extensively tested both in simulation and with a real outdoor robot. Our path planning approach is adequate for scenarios where a robot is initially guided during map construction, but autonomous during execution. For other scenarios in which more autonomy is required, the robot should be able to explore the environment without any supervision. The second core contribution of this thesis is an autonomous exploration method that complements the aforementioned path planning strategy. The method selects the appropriate actions to drive the robot so as to maximize coverage and at the same time minimize localization and map uncertainties. An occupancy grid is maintained for the sole purpose of guaranteeing coverage. A significant advantage of the method is that since the grid is only computed to hypothesize entropy reduction of candidate map posteriors, it can be computed at a very coarse resolution since it is not used to maintain neither the robot localization estimate, nor the structure of the environment. Our technique evaluates two types of actions: exploratory actions and place revisiting actions. Action decisions are made based on entropy reduction estimates.     Online control policy optimization for minimizing map uncertainty during exploration

    Abstract — Tremendous progress has been made recently in simultaneous localization and mapping of unknown environments. Using sensor and odometry data from an exploring mobile robot, it has become much easier to build high-quality globally consistent maps of many large, real-world environments. However, relatively little attention has been paid to date to the controllers used to build these maps. Exploration strategies are often used to cover the largest amount of unknown space as quickly as possible, but few strategies exist for building the most reliable map possible. Nevertheless, the particular control strategy can have a substantial impact on the quality of the resulting map. In this paper, we devise a control algorithm for exploring unknown space that explicitly tries to build as large a map as possible while maintaining as accurate a map as possible. We make use of a parameterized class of spiral trajectory policies, choosing a new parameter setting at every time step to maximise the expected reward of the policy. We do this in the context of building a visual map of an unknown environment, and show that our strategy leads to a higher accuracy map faster than other candidate controllers, including any single choice in our policy class.     Robot Mapping and Navigation in Real-World Environments

    Robots can perform various tasks, such as mapping hazardous sites, taking part in search-and-rescue scenarios, or delivering goods and people. Robots operating in the real world face many challenges on the way to the completion of their mission. Essential capabilities required for the operation of such robots are mapping, localization and navigation. Solving all of these tasks robustly presents a substantial difficulty as these components are usually interconnected, i.e., a robot that starts without any knowledge about the environment must simultaneously build a map, localize itself in it, analyze the surroundings and plan a path to efficiently explore an unknown environment. In addition to the interconnections between these tasks, they highly depend on the sensors used by the robot and on the type of the environment in which the robot operates. For example, an RGB camera can be used in an outdoor scene for computing visual odometry, or to detect dynamic objects but becomes less useful in an environment that does not have enough light for cameras to operate. The software that controls the behavior of the robot must seamlessly process all the data coming from different sensors. This often leads to systems that are tailored to a particular robot and a particular set of sensors. In this thesis, we challenge this concept by developing and implementing methods for a typical robot navigation pipeline that can work with different types of the sensors seamlessly both, in indoor and outdoor environments. With the emergence of new range-sensing RGBD and LiDAR sensors, there is an opportunity to build a single system that can operate robustly both in indoor and outdoor environments equally well and, thus, extends the application areas of mobile robots. The techniques presented in this thesis aim to be used with both RGBD and LiDAR sensors without adaptations for individual sensor models by using range image representation and aim to provide methods for navigation and scene interpretation in both static and dynamic environments. For a static world, we present a number of approaches that address the core components of a typical robot navigation pipeline. At the core of building a consistent map of the environment using a mobile robot lies point cloud matching. To this end, we present a method for photometric point cloud matching that treats RGBD and LiDAR sensors in a uniform fashion and is able to accurately register point clouds at the frame rate of the sensor. This method serves as a building block for the further mapping pipeline. In addition to the matching algorithm, we present a method for traversability analysis of the currently observed terrain in order to guide an autonomous robot to the safe parts of the surrounding environment. A source of danger when navigating difficult to access sites is the fact that the robot may fail in building a correct map of the environment. This dramatically impacts the ability of an autonomous robot to navigate towards its goal in a robust way, thus, it is important for the robot to be able to detect these situations and to find its way home not relying on any kind of map. To address this challenge, we present a method for analyzing the quality of the map that the robot has built to date, and safely returning the robot to the starting point in case the map is found to be in an inconsistent state. The scenes in dynamic environments are vastly different from the ones experienced in static ones. In a dynamic setting, objects can be moving, thus making static traversability estimates not enough. With the approaches developed in this thesis, we aim at identifying distinct objects and tracking them to aid navigation and scene understanding. We target these challenges by providing a method for clustering a scene taken with a LiDAR scanner and a measure that can be used to determine if two clustered objects are similar that can aid the tracking performance. All methods presented in this thesis are capable of supporting real-time robot operation, rely on RGBD or LiDAR sensors and have been tested on real robots in real-world environments and on real-world datasets. All approaches have been published in peer-reviewed conference papers and journal articles. In addition to that, most of the presented contributions have been released publicly as open source software

    Visual Navigation in Unknown Environments

    Navigation in mobile robotics involves two tasks, keeping track of the robot's position and moving according to a control strategy. In addition, when no prior knowledge of the environment is available, the problem is even more difficult, as the robot has to build a map of its surroundings as it moves. These three problems ought to be solved in conjunction since they depend on each other. This thesis is about simultaneously controlling an autonomous vehicle, estimating its location and building the map of the environment. The main objective is to analyse the problem from a control theoretical perspective based on the EKF-SLAM implementation. The contribution of this thesis is the analysis of system's properties such as observability, controllability and stability, which allow us to propose an appropriate navigation scheme that produces well-behaved estimators, controllers, and consequently, the system as a whole. We present a steady state analysis of the SLAM problem, identifying the conditions that lead to partial observability. It is shown that the effects of partial observability appear even in the ideal linear Gaussian case. This indicates that linearisation alone is not the only cause of SLAM inconsistency, and that observability must be achieved as a prerequisite to tackling the effects of linearisation. Additionally, full observability is also shown to be necessary during diagonalisation of the covariance matrix, an approach often used to reduce the computational complexity of the SLAM algorithm, and which leads to full controllability as we show in this work.Focusing specifically on the case of a system with a single monocular camera, we present an observability analysis using the nullspace basis of the stripped observability matrix. The aim is to get a better understanding of the well known intuitive behaviour of this type of systems, such as the need for triangulation to features from different positions in order to get accurate relative pose estimates between vehicle and camera. Through characterisation the unobservable directions in monocular SLAM, we are able to identify the vehicle motions required to maximise the number of observable states in the system. When closing the control loop of the SLAM system, both the feedback controller and the estimator are shown to be asymptotically stable. Furthermore, we show that the tracking error does not influence the estimation performance of a fully observable system and viceversa, that control is not affected by the estimation. Because of this, a higher level motion strategy is required in order to enhance estimation, specially needed while performing SLAM with a single camera. Considering a real-time application, we propose a control strategy to optimise both the localisation of the vehicle and the feature map by computing the most appropriate control actions or movements. The actions are chosen in order to maximise an information theoretic metric. Simulations and real-time experiments are performed to demonstrate the feasibility of the proposed control strategy
