Trends and achievements
Similar to the previous edition, this event continued to be very competitive in its selection process and very well perceived by the international software engineering community. As such, it is attracting excellent contributions and active participation from all over the world. We were very pleased to receive a large amount of top quality contributions.
We take here the opportunity to warmly thank all the members of the ICSEA 2021 technical program committee as well as the numerous reviewers. The creation of such a broad and high quality conference program would not have been possible without their involvement. We also kindly thank all the authors that dedicated much of their time and efforts to contribute to the ICSEA 2021. We truly believe that thanks to all these efforts, the final conference program consists of top quality contributions.
This event could also not have been a reality without the support of many individuals, organizations and sponsors. We also gratefully thank the members of the ICSEA 2021 organizing committee for their help in handling the logistics and for their work that is making this professional meeting a success.
We hope the ICSEA 2021 was a successful international forum for the exchange of ideas and results between academia and industry and to promote further progress in software engineering research
The role of limitations and SLAs in the API industry
As software architecture design is evolving to a microservice paradigm, RESTful APIs are being established as the preferred choice to build applications. In such a scenario, there is a shift towards a growing market of APIs where providers offer different service levels with tailored limitations typically based on the cost.
In this context, while there are well established standards to describe the functional elements of APIs (such as the OpenAPI Specification), having a standard model for Service Level Agreements (SLAs) for APIs may boost an open ecosystem of tools that would represent an improvement for the industry by automating certain tasks during the development such as: SLA-aware scaffolding, SLA-aware testing, or SLA-aware requesters.
Unfortunately, despite there have been several proposals to describe SLAs for software in general and web services in particular during the past decades, there is an actual lack of a widely used standard due to the complex landscape of concepts surrounding the notion of SLAs and the multiple perspectives that can be addressed.
In this paper, we aim to analyze the landscape for SLAs for APIs in two different directions: i) Clarifying the SLA-driven API development lifecycle: its activities and participants; 2) Developing a catalog of relevant concepts and an ulterior prioritization based on different perspectives from both Industry and Academia.
As a main result, we present a scored list of concepts that paves the way to establish a concrete road-map for a standard industry-aligned specification to describe SLAs in APIs.Ministerio de Economía y Competitividad TIN2015-70560-RMinisterio de Ciencia, Innovación y Universidades RTI2018-101204-B-C21Ministerio de Educación, Cultura y Deporte FPU15/0298
Cloud based testing of business applications and web services
This paper deals with testing of applications based on the principles of cloud computing. It is aimed to describe options of testing business software in clouds (cloud testing). It identifies the needs for cloud testing tools including multi-layer testing; service level agreement (SLA) based testing, large scale simulation, and on-demand test environment. In a cloud-based model, ICT services are distributed and accessed over networks such as intranet or internet, which offer large data centers deliver on demand,
resources as a service, eliminating the need for investments in specific hardware, software, or on data center infrastructure. Businesses can apply those new technologies in the contest of intellectual capital management to lower the cost and increase competitiveness and also earnings. Based on comparison of the testing tools and techniques, the paper further investigates future trend of cloud based testing tools research and development. It is also important to say that this comparison and classification of testing tools describes a new area and it has not yet been done
Laniakea@ReCaS: an ELIXIR-ITALY Galaxyon-demand cloud service
Although several Galaxy public services are available, a private Galaxy instance is still mandatory or preferable for several use cases including heavy workloads, data privacy concerns or particular customization needs. Cloud computing technologies provide a viable way to deploy Galaxy private instances, freeing users from the onerous deployment and maintenance of local IT infrastructures. In the last few years, ELIXIR-IT led the development of Laniakea, a software framework that facilitates the provisioning of on-demand Galaxy instances as a cloud service over e-infrastructures. The user interacts with a Laniakea service through a web front-end that allows to configure and launch a production-grade Galaxy instance in a straightforward way. Through the interface, the user can deploy Galaxy instances over single VMs or virtual clusters, link them to shared reference data volumes and plain or encrypted volumes for storing data. A selection of \u201cflavours\u201d, that is Galaxy instances pre-configured with sets of tools for specific tasks, is also available. When the users is satisfied, Laniakea takes oved and deploys the desired Galaxy instance over the cloud, providing a public IP and full administrative privileges over the new instance.
In Dec-2018, we launched the beta-test phase of the first Laniakea-based Galaxy on-demand ELIXIR-IT service: Laniakea@ReCaS. After six months of helpful testing, we are now ready to announce the production phase of this service.
Access to the service will be provided on a per-project basis through an open-ended call defining terms and conditions, project proposals will be evaluated by a scientific and technical board. Accepted proposals will be granted a package of computational resources for running on-demand Galaxy instances for a duration compatible with the project requirements
Mercury: using the QuPreSS reference model to evaluate predictive services
Nowadays, lots of service providers offer predictive services that show in advance a condition or occurrence about the future. As a consequence, it becomes necessary for service customers to select the predictive service that best satisfies their needs. The QuPreSS reference model provides a standard solution for the selection of predictive services based on the quality of their predictions. QuPreSS has been designed to be applicable in any predictive domain (e.g., weather forecasting, economics, and medicine). This paper presents Mercury, a tool based on the QuPreSS reference model and customized to the weather forecast domain. Mercury measures weather predictive services' quality, and automates the context-dependent selection of the most accurate predictive service to satisfy a customer query. To do so, candidate predictive services are monitored so that their predictions can be eventually compared to real observations obtained from a trusted source. Mercury is a proof-of-concept of QuPreSS that aims to show that the selection of predictive services can be driven by the quality of their predictions. Throughout the paper, we show how Mercury was built from the QuPreSS reference model and how it can be installed and used.Peer ReviewedPostprint (author's final draft

Software test automation : a design and tool selection approach for a heterogeneous environment
textThis report describes a design approach for implementing a software test automation solution that can accommodate existing test processes in an organization. The process of implementing a software test automation solution is a large undertaking and requires careful planning to avoid unsuccessful implementations. This report outlines a design that can integrate with existing business and development processes in an organization, and recommends automation and development frameworks for achieving the test automation goals.
Considerations for a heterogeneous test environment with varying types of supported operating systems, such as Windows and Linux, and multiple test execution environments, such as Java and .NET, have been made in this design and in the tool selections for the system implementation. The report also describes some of the challenges and caveats of automation in a heterogeneous environment along with recommended solutions to these challenges.Electrical and Computer Engineerin
