    Insights on the spatial configuration of collective spaces within forming dynamics: the relation between infrastructure and urban transformation in Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes

    The research seeks to produce insights on the spatial configuration of collective spaces where large scale infrastructure propels urban transformation. Focusing on the meaning, character and programmatic qualities of urban spaces in transformation as outcomes of fluctuating processes, it deals with complex spatial forming dynamics of urban streetscapes: the non-traditional conjugations of spaces, boundaries and territories. These spaces foster unexpected notions of proximity, territoriality, permeability and critical boundaries, investigated by means of specific parameters manifesting and interacting in time. This can help upgrade the design of architecture and urban projects to innovative techno-cultural practices and improve their integration in the urban fabric; urgent matter within the hyper-complex conditions of contemporary urban realities. The case of Plaça de les Glòries Catalanes in Barcelona, where a car-oriented open-space based on a variety of spatial manifestations turns into a formalized urban centrality, is used to unveil the complex convergence of streetscapes and urban infrastructures in contemporary urban transformations

    Automated-tuned hyper-parameter deep neural network by using arithmetic optimization algorithm for Lorenz chaotic system

    Deep neural networks (DNNs) are very dependent on their parameterization and require experts to determine which method to implement and modify the hyper-parameters value. This study proposes an automated-tuned hyper-parameter for DNN using a metaheuristic optimization algorithm, arithmetic optimization algorithm (AOA). AOA makes use of the distribution properties of mathematics’ primary arithmetic operators, including multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction. AOA is mathematically modeled and implemented to optimize processes across a broad range of search spaces. The performance of AOA is evaluated against 29 benchmark functions, and several real-world engineering design problems are to demonstrate AOA’s applicability. The hyper-parameter tuning framework consists of a set of Lorenz chaotic system datasets, hybrid DNN architecture, and AOA that works automatically. As a result, AOA produced the highest accuracy in the test dataset with a combination of optimized hyper-parameters for DNN architecture. The boxplot analysis also produced the ten AOA particles that are the most accurately chosen. Hence, AOA with ten particles had the smallest size of boxplot for all hyper-parameters, which concluded the best solution. In particular, the result for the proposed system is outperformed compared to the architecture tested with particle swarm optimization

    Hybridity and Habitation: A Rhetorical Analysis of Interior Design in Live-Action Cyberpunk Films Through the Lens of Posthumanism and Thing Theory

    Characterized by hyper-urban environments, extreme class division, and an abundance ofcorporate oversight, the cyberpunk subgenre of science-fiction is a prime candidate for scholarly research on speculative interior design and associated technologies. Using the theoretical frameworks of posthumanism, or the concept that humans will transcend their current biological form in the near future, and thing theory, or the worldview that objects are able to enact their autonomy on living subjects, interior design in three live-action films in the cyberpunk subgenre were analyzed in order to determine how depictions of future spaces reflect present ideations of our potential real future. Metaphor analysis was employed as this thesis’ methodology, as the ideologies implemented in design and technology are often understood through tactile or visual interactions with artifacts. After applying metaphor analysis to one domestic space, one workspace, and one decorative element in each film, it has become evident that in our inevitable posthuman future, human scale and the corporeal form of our species must be taken into account when creating spaces and technologies for us to inhabit and use. Though it may be inaccurate to surmise that design can solve all of the institutional problems that plague societies, there is reason to believe that the inanimate spaces and technologies that occupy our lives do play a role in affecting our psyche and ability to foster healthy relationships

    Approximating solution spaces as a product of polygons

    Solution spaces are regions of good designs in a potentially high-dimensional design space. Good designs satisfy by definition all requirements that are imposed on them as mathematical constraints. In previous work, the complete solution space was approximated by a hyper-rectangle, i.e., the Cartesian product of permissible intervals for design variables. These intervals serve as independent target regions for distributed and separated design work. For a better approximation, i.e., a larger resulting solution space, this article proposes to compute the Cartesian product of two-dimensional regions, so-called 2d-spaces, that are enclosed by polygons. 2d-spaces serve as target regions for pairs of variables and are independent of other 2d-spaces. A numerical algorithm for non-linear problems is presented that is based on iterative Monte-Carlo sampling

    Living with difference in hyper-diverse areas: how important are encounters in semi-public spaces?

    Urban populations increasingly diversify in their socio-economic, cultural, religious and linguistic profiles as well as in their lifestyles, attitudes and activity patterns. This hyper-diversification can complicate feelings of belonging and community. Since diversity is negotiated at the neighbourhood level, micro spaces are central in building communities. Micro spaces tend to be semi-public and stimulate diverse groups to intermingle, which results in on–off as well as repetitive and structural interactions. Understanding the creation and impact of encounters is central to capturing contemporary notions of belonging and living with difference. This paper compares encounters experienced in two semi-public spaces in the hyper-diverse neighbourhood of Feyenoord in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. Although encounters at the library were lighter and shorter than at the community-centre, all positively impact collective life in the neighbourhood. At the community-centre, encounters result in light as well as deeper relationships, making visitors feel more at ‘home’ because they recognize others elsewhere in the neighbourhood. At the library, encounters are lighter but visitors become familiar with diversity, making them feel more at ‘home’ and safe in their neighbourhood as well. The study suggests that fleeting encounters require more serious attention within the context of negotiating diversity
