K-Dominance in Multidimensional Data: Theory and Applications
We study the problem of k-dominance in a set of d-dimensional vectors, prove bounds on the number of maxima (skyline vectors), under both worst-case and average-case models, perform experimental evaluation using synthetic and real-world data, and explore an application of k-dominant skyline for extracting a small set of top-ranked vectors in high dimensions where the full skylines can be unmanageably large
Earthquake Arrival Association with Backprojection and Graph Theory
The association of seismic wave arrivals with causative earthquakes becomes
progressively more challenging as arrival detection methods become more
sensitive, and particularly when earthquake rates are high. For instance,
seismic waves arriving across a monitoring network from several sources may
overlap in time, false arrivals may be detected, and some arrivals may be of
unknown phase (e.g., P- or S-waves). We propose an automated method to
associate arrivals with earthquake sources and obtain source locations
applicable to such situations. To do so we use a pattern detection metric based
on the principle of backprojection to reveal candidate sources, followed by
graph-theory-based clustering and an integer linear optimization routine to
associate arrivals with the minimum number of sources necessary to explain the
data. This method solves for all sources and phase assignments simultaneously,
rather than in a sequential greedy procedure as is common in other association
routines. We demonstrate our method on both synthetic and real data from the
Integrated Plate Boundary Observatory Chile (IPOC) seismic network of northern
Chile. For the synthetic tests we report results for cases with varying
complexity, including rates of 500 earthquakes/day and 500 false
arrivals/station/day, for which we measure true positive detection accuracy of
> 95%. For the real data we develop a new catalog between January 1, 2010 -
December 31, 2017 containing 817,548 earthquakes, with detection rates on
average 279 earthquakes/day, and a magnitude-of-completion of ~M1.8. A subset
of detections are identified as sources related to quarry and industrial site
activity, and we also detect thousands of foreshocks and aftershocks of the
April 1, 2014 Mw 8.2 Iquique earthquake. During the highest rates of aftershock
activity, > 600 earthquakes/day are detected in the vicinity of the Iquique
earthquake rupture zone
Controlling instabilities along a 3DVar analysis cycle by assimilating in the unstable subspace: a comparison with the EnKF
A hybrid scheme obtained by combining 3DVar with the Assimilation in the
Unstable Subspace (3DVar-AUS) is tested in a QG model, under perfect model
conditions, with a fixed observational network, with and without observational
noise. The AUS scheme, originally formulated to assimilate adaptive
observations, is used here to assimilate the fixed observations that are found
in the region of local maxima of BDAS vectors (Bred vectors subject to
assimilation), while the remaining observations are assimilated by 3DVar.
The performance of the hybrid scheme is compared with that of 3DVar and of an
EnKF. The improvement gained by 3DVar-AUS and the EnKF with respect to 3DVar
alone is similar in the present model and observational configuration, while
3DVar-AUS outperforms the EnKF during the forecast stage. The 3DVar-AUS
algorithm is easy to implement and the results obtained in the idealized
conditions of this study encourage further investigation toward an
implementation in more realistic contexts
Classical Disordered Ground States: Super-Ideal Gases, and Stealth and Equi-Luminous Materials
Using a collective coordinate numerical optimization procedure, we construct
ground-state configurations of interacting particle systems in various space
dimensions so that the scattering of radiation exactly matches a prescribed
pattern for a set of wave vectors. We show that the constructed ground states
are, counterintuitively, disordered (i.e., possess no long-range order) in the
infinite-volume limit. We focus on three classes of configurations with unique
radiation scattering characteristics: (i)``stealth'' materials, which are
transparent to incident radiation at certain wavelengths; (ii)``super-ideal''
gases, which scatter radiation identically to that of an ensemble of ideal gas
configurations for a selected set of wave vectors; and (iii)``equi-luminous''
materials, which scatter radiation equally intensely for a selected set of wave
vectors. We find that ground-state configurations have an increased tendency to
contain clusters of particles as one increases the prescribed luminosity.

Design Spectrum Analysis in NASTRAN
The utility of Design Spectrum Analysis is to give a mode by mode characterization of the behavior of a design under a given loading. The theory of design spectrum is discussed after operations are explained. User instructions are taken up here in three parts: Transient Preface, Maximum Envelope Spectrum, and RMS Average Spectrum followed by a Summary Table. A single DMAP ALTER packet will provide for all parts of the design spectrum operations. The starting point for getting a modal break-down of the response to acceleration loading is the Modal Transient rigid format. After eigenvalue extraction, modal vectors need to be isolated in the full set of physical coordinates (P-sized as opposed to the D-sized vectors in RF 12). After integration for transient response the results are scanned over the solution time interval for the peak values and for the times that they occur. A module called SCAN was written to do this job, that organizes these maxima into a diagonal output matrix. The maximum amplifier in each mode is applied to the eigenvector of each mode which then reveals the maximum displacements, stresses, forces and boundary reactions that the structure will experience for a load history, mode by mode. The Ge(001) (2 × 1) reconstruction: asymmetric dimers and multilayer relaxation observed by grazing incidence X-ray diffraction
Grazing incidence X-ray diffraction has been used to analyze in detail the atomic structure of the (2 × 1) reconstruction of the Ge(001) surface involving far reaching subsurface relaxations. Two kinds of disorder models, a statistical and a dynamical were taken into account for the data analysis, both indicating substantial disorder along the surface normal. This can only be correlated to asymmetric dimers.
Considering a statistical disorder model assuming randomly oriented dimers the analysis of 13 symmetrically independent in-plane fractional order reflections and of four fractional order reciprocal lattice rods up to the maximum attainable momentum transfer qz = 3c* (c* = 1.77 × 10−1 Å−1) indicates the formation of asymmetric dimers characterized by R>D = 2.46(5) Å as compared to the bulk bonding length of R = 2.45 Å. The dimer height of Δ Z = 0.74(15) Å corresponds to a dimer buckling angle of 17(4)°. The data refinement using anisotropic thermal parameters leads to a bonding length of RD = 2.44(4) Å and to a large anisotropy of the root mean-square vibration amplitudes of the dimer atoms (u112) 1/2 = 0.25 Å, (u222)1/2 = 0.14 Å, (u332)1/2 = 0.50 Å). SAIVT-QUT@TRECVid 2012: Interactive surveillance event detection
In this paper, we propose an approach which attempts to solve the problem of surveillance event detection, assuming that we know the definition of the events. To facilitate the discussion, we first define two concepts. The event of interest refers to the event that the user requests the system to detect; and the background activities are any other events in the video corpus. This is an unsolved problem due to many factors as listed below: 1) Occlusions and clustering: The surveillance scenes which are of significant interest at locations such as airports, railway stations, shopping centers are often crowded, where occlusions and clustering of people are frequently encountered. This significantly affects the feature extraction step, and for instance, trajectories generated by object tracking algorithms are usually not robust under such a situation. 2) The requirement for real time detection: The system should process the video fast enough in both of the feature extraction and the detection step to facilitate real time operation. 3) Massive size of the training data set: Suppose there is an event that lasts for 1 minute in a video with a frame rate of 25fps, the number of frames for this events is 60X25 = 1500. If we want to have a training data set with many positive instances of the event, the video is likely to be very large in size (i.e. hundreds of thousands of frames or more). How to handle such a large data set is a problem frequently encountered in this application. 4) Difficulty in separating the event of interest from background activities: The events of interest often co-exist with a set of background activities. Temporal groundtruth typically very ambiguous, as it does not distinguish the event of interest from a wide range of co-existing background activities. However, it is not practical to annotate the locations of the events in large amounts of video data. This problem becomes more serious in the detection of multi-agent interactions, since the location of these events can often not be constrained to within a bounding box. 5) Challenges in determining the temporal boundaries of the events: An event can occur at any arbitrary time with an arbitrary duration. The temporal segmentation of events is difficult and ambiguous, and also affected by other factors such as occlusions
3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry Method: Advances and Error Analysis
A full three-dimensional particle tracking system was developed and tested. By using three separate CCDs placed at the vertices of an equilateral triangle, the threedimensional location of particles can be determined. Particle locations measured at two different times can then be used to create a three-component, three-dimensional velocity field. Key developments are: the ability to accurately process overlapping particle images, offset CCDs to significantly improve effective resolution, allowance for dim particle images, and a hybrid particle tracking technique ideal for three-dimensional flows when only two sets of images exist. An in-depth theoretical error analysis was performed which gives the important sources of error and their effect on the overall system. This error analysis was verified through a series of experiments, which utilized a test target with 100 small dots per square inch. For displacements of 2.54mm the mean errors were less than 2% and the 90% confidence limits were less than 5.2 μm in the plane perpendicular to the camera axis, and 66 μm in the direction of the camera axis. The system was used for flow measurements around a delta wing at an angle of attack. These measurements show the successful implementation of the system for three-dimensional flow velocimetry
