Energy efficiency in heterogeneous wireless access networks
In this article, we bring forward the important aspect of energy savings in wireless access networks. We specifically focus on the energy saving opportunities in the recently evolving heterogeneous networks (HetNets), both Single- RAT and Multi-RAT. Issues such as sleep/wakeup cycles and interference management are discussed for co-channel Single-RAT HetNets. In addition to that, a simulation based study for LTE macro-femto HetNets is presented, indicating the need for dynamic energy efficient resource management schemes. Multi-RAT HetNets also come with challenges such as network integration, combined resource management and network selection. Along with a discussion on these challenges, we also investigate the performance of the conventional WLAN-first network selection mechanism in terms of energy efficiency (EE) and suggest that EE can be improved by the application of intelligent call admission control policies
A Multi-Game Framework for Harmonized LTE-U and WiFi Coexistence over Unlicensed Bands
The introduction of LTE over unlicensed bands (LTE-U) will enable LTE base
stations (BSs) to boost their capacity and offload their traffic by exploiting
the underused unlicensed bands. However, to reap the benefits of LTE-U, it is
necessary to address various new challenges associated with LTE-U and WiFi
coexistence. In particular, new resource management techniques must be
developed to optimize the usage of the network resources while handling the
interdependence between WiFi and LTE users and ensuring that WiFi users are not
jeopardized. To this end, in this paper, a new game theoretic tool, dubbed as
\emph{multi-game} framework is proposed as a promising approach for modeling
resource allocation problems in LTE-U. In such a framework, multiple,
co-existing and coupled games across heterogeneous channels can be formulated
to capture the specific characteristics of LTE-U. Such games can be of
different properties and types but their outcomes are largely interdependent.
After introducing the basics of the multi-game framework, two classes of
algorithms are outlined to achieve the new solution concepts of multi-games.
Simulation results are then conducted to show how such a multi-game can
effectively capture the specific properties of LTE-U and make of it a
"friendly" neighbor to WiFi.Comment: Accepted for publication at IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine,

Keep Your Nice Friends Close, but Your Rich Friends Closer -- Computation Offloading Using NFC
The increasing complexity of smartphone applications and services necessitate
high battery consumption but the growth of smartphones' battery capacity is not
keeping pace with these increasing power demands. To overcome this problem,
researchers gave birth to the Mobile Cloud Computing (MCC) research area. In
this paper we advance on previous ideas, by proposing and implementing the
first known Near Field Communication (NFC)-based computation offloading
framework. This research is motivated by the advantages of NFC's short distance
communication, with its better security, and its low battery consumption. We
design a new NFC communication protocol that overcomes the limitations of the
default protocol; removing the need for constant user interaction, the one-way
communication restraint, and the limit on low data size transfer. We present
experimental results of the energy consumption and the time duration of two
computationally intensive representative applications: (i) RSA key generation
and encryption, and (ii) gaming/puzzles. We show that when the helper device is
more powerful than the device offloading the computations, the execution time
of the tasks is reduced. Finally, we show that devices that offload application
parts considerably reduce their energy consumption due to the low-power NFC
interface and the benefits of offloading.Comment: 9 pages, 4 tables, 13 figure
Weighted proportional fairness and pricing based resource allocation for uplink offloading using IP flow mobility
Mobile data offloading has been proposed as a solution for the network congestion problem that is continuously aggravating due to the increase in mobile data demand. However, the majority of the state-of-the-art is focused on the downlink offloading, while the change of mobile user habits, like mobile content creation and uploading, makes uplink offloading a rising issue. In this work we focus on the uplink offloading using IP Flow Mobility (IFOM). IFOM allows a LTE mobile User Equipment (UE) to maintain two concurrent data streams, one through LTE and the other through WiFi access technology, that presents uplink limitations due to the inherent fairness design of IEEE 802.11 DCF by employing the CSMA/CA scheme with a binary exponential backoff algorithm. In this paper, we propose a weighted proportionally fair bandwidth allocation algorithm for the data volume that is being offloaded through WiFi, in conjunction with a pricing-based rate allocation for the rest of the data volume needs of the UEs that are transmitted through the LTE uplink. We aim to improve the energy efficiency of the UEs and to increase the offloaded data volume under the concurrent use of access technologies that IFOM allows. In the weighted proportionally fair WiFi bandwidth allocation, we consider both the different upload data needs of the UEs, along with their LTE spectrum efficiency and propose an access mechanism that improves the use of WiFi access in uplink offloading. In the LTE part, we propose a two-stage pricing-based rate allocation under both linear and exponential pricing approaches, aiming to satisfy all offloading UEs regarding their LTE uplink access. We theoretically analyse the proposed algorithms and evaluate their performance through simulations. We compare their performance with the 802.11 DCF access scheme and with a state-of-the-art access algorithm under different number of offloading UEs and for both linear and exponential pricing-based rate allocation for the LTE uplink. Through the evaluation of energy efficiency, offloading capabilities and throughput performance, we provide an improved uplink access scheme for UEs that operate with IFOM for uplink offloading.Peer ReviewedPreprin
