    On aggregation operators of transitive similarity and dissimilarity relations

    Similarity and dissimilarity are widely used concepts. One of the most studied matters is their combination or aggregation. However, transitivity property is often ignored when aggregating despite being a highly important property, studied by many authors but from different points of view. We collect here some results in preserving transitivity when aggregating, intending to clarify the relationship between aggregation and transitivity and making it useful to design aggregation operators that keep transitivity property.     A reusable iterative optimization software library to solve combinatorial problems with approximate reasoning

    Real world combinatorial optimization problems such as scheduling are typically too complex to solve with exact methods. Additionally, the problems often have to observe vaguely specified constraints of different importance, the available data may be uncertain, and compromises between antagonistic criteria may be necessary. We present a combination of approximate reasoning based constraints and iterative optimization based heuristics that help to model and solve such problems in a framework of C++ software libraries called StarFLIP++.     Fuzzy modelling using a simplified rule base

    Transparency and complexity are two major concerns of fuzzy rule-based systems. To improve accuracy and precision of the outputs, we need to increase the partitioning of the input space. However, this increases the number of rules exponentially, thereby increasing the complexity of the system and decreasing its transparency. The main factor behind these two issues is the conjunctive canonical form of the fuzzy rules. We present a novel method for replacing these rules with their singleton forms, and using aggregation operators to provide the mechanism for combining the crisp outputs

    Managing Interacting Criteria: Application to Environmental Evaluation Practices

    The need for organizations to evaluate their environmental practices has been recently increasing. This fact has led to the development of many approaches to appraise such practices. In this paper, a novel decision model to evaluate company’s environmental practices is proposed to improve traditional evaluation process in different facets. Firstly, different reviewers’ collectives related to the company’s activity are taken into account in the process to increase company internal efficiency and external legitimacy. Secondly, following the standard ISO 14031, two general categories of environmental performance indicators, management and operational, are considered. Thirdly, since the assumption of independence among environmental indicators is rarely verified in environmental context, an aggregation operator to bear in mind the relationship among such indicators in the evaluation results is proposed. Finally, this new model integrates quantitative and qualitative information with different scales using a multi-granular linguistic model that allows to adapt diverse evaluation scales according to appraisers’ knowledge

    Linking objective and subjective modeling in engineering design through arc-elastic dominance

    Engineering design in mechanics is a complex activity taking into account both objective modeling processes derived from physical analysis and designers’ subjective reasoning. This paper introduces arc-elastic dominance as a suitable concept for ranking design solutions according to a combination of objective and subjective models. Objective models lead to the aggregation of information derived from physics, economics or eco-environmental analysis into a performance indicator. Subjective models result in a confidence indicator for the solutions’ feasibility. Arc-elastic dominant design solutions achieve an optimal compromise between gain in performance and degradation in confidence. Due to the definition of arc-elasticity, this compromise value is expressive and easy for designers to interpret despite the difference in the nature of the objective and subjective models. From the investigation of arc-elasticity mathematical properties, a filtering algorithm of Pareto-efficient solutions is proposed and illustrated through a design knowledge modeling framework. This framework notably takes into account Harrington’s desirability functions and Derringer’s aggregation method. It is carried out through the re-design of a geothermal air conditioning system
