    Howdah: Load Profiling via In-Band Flow Classification and P4

    The challenges of managing datacenter traffic increase with the complexity and variety of new Internet and Web applications. Efficient network management systems are often required to thwart delays and minimize failures. In this regard, it appears helpful to identify in advance the different classes of flows that (co)exist in the network, characterizing them into different types according to the different latency/bandwidth requirements. In this paper, we propose Howdah, a traffic identification and profiling mechanism that uses Machine Learning and a congestion-aware forwarding strategy to offer adaptation to different traffic classes with the support of programmable data-planes. With Howdah, sender and gateway elements inject in-band traffic information obtained using supervised learning. When a switch or a router receives a packet, it exploits such host-based traffic classification to adapt to a desirable traffic profile, for example, balancing the load. We compare our solutions against recent traffic engineering solutions and show the efficacy of cooperation between host traffic classification and P4-based switch forwarding policies, reducing packet transmission time in datacenter scenarios

    Optimizing total cost of ownership (TCO) for 5G multi-tenant mobile backhaul (MBH) optical transport networks

    Legacy network elements are reaching end-of-life and packet-based transport networks are not efficiently optimized. In particular, high density cell architecture in future 5G networks will face big technical and financial challenges due to avalanche of traffic volume and massive growth in connected devices. Raising density and ever-increasing traffic demand within future 5G Heterogeneous Networks (HetNets) will result in huge deployment, expansion and operating costs for upcoming Mobile BackHaul (MBH) networks with flat revenue generation. Thus, the goal of this dissertation is to provide an efficient physical network planning mechanism and an optimized resource engineering tool in order to reduce the Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) and increase the generated revenues. This will help Service Providers (SPs) and Mobile Network Operators (MNOs) to improve their network scalability and maintain positive Project Profit Margins (PPM). In order to meet this goal, three key issues are required to be addressed in our framework and are summarized as follows: i) how to design and migrate to a scalable and reliable MBH network in an optimal cost?, ii) how to control the deployment and activation of the network resources in such MBH based on required traffic demand in an efficient and cost-effective way?, and iii) how to enhance the resource sharing in such network and maximize the profit margins in an efficient way? As part of our contributions to address the first issue highlighted above and to plan the MBH with reduced network TCO and improved scalability, we propose a comprehensive migration plan towards an End-to-End Integrated-Optical-Packet-Network (E2-IOPN) for SP optical transport networks. We review various empirical challenges faced by a real SP during the transformation process towards E2-IOPN as well as the implementation of an as-built plan and a high-level design (HLD) for migrating towards lower cost-per-bit GPON, MPLS-TP, OTN and next-generation DWDM technologies. Then, we propose a longer-term strategy based on SDN and NFV approach that will offer rapid end-to-end service provisioning with costefficient centralized network control. We define CapEx and OpEx cost models and drive a cost comparative study that shows the benefit and financial impact of introducing new low-cost packet-based technologies to carry traffic from legacy and new services. To address the second issue, we first introduce an algorithm based on a stochastic geometry model (Voronoi Tessellation) to more precisely define MBH zones within a geographical area and more accurately calculate required traffic demands and related MBH infrastructure. In order to optimize the deployment and activation of the network resources in the MBH in an efficient and cost-effective way, we propose a novel method called BackHauling-as-a-Service (BHaaS) for network planning and Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) analysis based on required traffic demand and a "You-pay-only-for-what-you-use" approach. Furthermore, we enhance BHaaS performance by introducing a more service-aware method called Traffic-Profile-asa- Service (TPaaS) to further drive down the costs based on yearly activated traffic profiles. Results show that BHaaS and TPaaS may enhance by 22% the project benefit compared to traditional TCO model. Finally, we introduce a new cost (CapEx and OpEx) models for 5G multi-tenant Virtualized MBH (V-MBH) as part of our contribution to address the third issue. In fact, in order to enhance the resource sharing and maximize the network profits, we drive a novel pay-as-yougrow and optimization model for the V-MBH called Virtual-Backhaul-as-a-Service (VBaaS). VBaaS can serve as a planning tool to optimize the Project Profit Margin (PPM) while considering the TCO and the yearly generated Return-on-Investment (ROI). We formulate an MNO Pricing Game (MPG) for TCO optimization to calculate the optimal Pareto-Equilibrium pricing strategy for offered Tenant Service Instances (TSI). Then, we compare CapEx, OpEx, TCO, ROI and PPM for a specific use-case known in the industry as CORD project using Traditional MBH (T-MBH) versus Virtualized MBH (V-MBH) as well as using randomized versus Pareto-Equilibrium pricing strategies. The results of our framework offer SPs and MNOs a more precise estimation of traffic demand, an optimized infrastructure planning and yearly resource deployment as well as an optimized TCO analysis (CapEx and OpEx) with enhanced pricing strategy and generated ROI. Numerical results show more than three times increase in network profitability using our proposed solutions compared with Traditional MBH (T-MBH) methods

    User-Centric Quality of Service Provisioning in IP Networks

    The Internet has become the preferred transport medium for almost every type of communication, continuing to grow, both in terms of the number of users and delivered services. Efforts have been made to ensure that time sensitive applications receive sufficient resources and subsequently receive an acceptable Quality of Service (QoS). However, typical Internet users no longer use a single service at a given point in time, as they are instead engaged in a multimedia-rich experience, comprising of many different concurrent services. Given the scalability problems raised by the diversity of the users and traffic, in conjunction with their increasing expectations, the task of QoS provisioning can no longer be approached from the perspective of providing priority to specific traffic types over coexisting services; either through explicit resource reservation, or traffic classification using static policies, as is the case with the current approach to QoS provisioning, Differentiated Services (Diffserv). This current use of static resource allocation and traffic shaping methods reveals a distinct lack of synergy between current QoS practices and user activities, thus highlighting a need for a QoS solution reflecting the user services. The aim of this thesis is to investigate and propose a novel QoS architecture, which considers the activities of the user and manages resources from a user-centric perspective. The research begins with a comprehensive examination of existing QoS technologies and mechanisms, arguing that current QoS practises are too static in their configuration and typically give priority to specific individual services rather than considering the user experience. The analysis also reveals the potential threat that unresponsive application traffic presents to coexisting Internet services and QoS efforts, and introduces the requirement for a balance between application QoS and fairness. This thesis proposes a novel architecture, the Congestion Aware Packet Scheduler (CAPS), which manages and controls traffic at the point of service aggregation, in order to optimise the overall QoS of the user experience. The CAPS architecture, in contrast to traditional QoS alternatives, places no predetermined precedence on a specific traffic; instead, it adapts QoS policies to each individual’s Internet traffic profile and dynamically controls the ratio of user services to maintain an optimised QoS experience. The rationale behind this approach was to enable a QoS optimised experience to each Internet user and not just those using preferred services. Furthermore, unresponsive bandwidth intensive applications, such as Peer-to-Peer, are managed fairly while minimising their impact on coexisting services. The CAPS architecture has been validated through extensive simulations with the topologies used replicating the complexity and scale of real-network ISP infrastructures. The results show that for a number of different user-traffic profiles, the proposed approach achieves an improved aggregate QoS for each user when compared with Best effort Internet, Traditional Diffserv and Weighted-RED configurations. Furthermore, the results demonstrate that the proposed architecture not only provides an optimised QoS to the user, irrespective of their traffic profile, but through the avoidance of static resource allocation, can adapt with the Internet user as their use of services change.France Teleco

    An ontology-based approach toward the configuration of heterogeneous network devices

    Despite the numerous efforts of standardization, semantic issues remain in effect in many subfields of networking. The inability to exchange data unambiguously between information systems and human resources is an issue that hinders technology implementation, semantic interoperability, service deployment, network management, technology migration, among many others. In this thesis, we will approach the semantic issues in two critical subfields of networking, namely, network configuration management and network addressing architectures. The fact that makes the study in these areas rather appealing is that in both scenarios semantic issues have been around from the very early days of networking. However, as networks continue to grow in size and complexity current practices are becoming neither scalable nor practical. One of the most complex and essential tasks in network management is the configuration of network devices. The lack of comprehensive and standard means for modifying and controlling the configuration of network elements has led to the continuous and extended use of proprietary Command Line Interfaces (CLIs). Unfortunately, CLIs are generally both, device and vendor-specific. In the context of heterogeneous network infrastructures---i.e., networks typically composed of multiple devices from different vendors---the use of several CLIs raises serious Operation, Administration and Management (OAM) issues. Accordingly, network administrators are forced to gain specialized expertise and to continuously keep knowledge and skills up to date as new features, system upgrades or technologies appear. Overall, the utilization of proprietary mechanisms allows neither sharing knowledge consistently between vendors' domains nor reusing configurations to achieve full automation of network configuration tasks---which are typically required in autonomic management. Due to this heterogeneity, CLIs typically provide a help feature which is in turn an useful source of knowledge to enable semantic interpretation of a vendor's configuration space. The large amount of information a network administrator must learn and manage makes Information Extraction (IE) and other forms of natural language analysis of the Artificial Intelligence (AI) field key enablers for the network device configuration space. This thesis presents the design and implementation specification of the first Ontology-Based Information Extraction (OBIE) System from the CLI of network devices for the automation and abstraction of device configurations. Moreover, the so-called semantic overload of IP addresses---wherein addresses are both identifiers and locators of a node at the same time---is one of the main constraints over mobility of network hosts, multi-homing and scalability of the routing system. In light of this, numerous approaches have emerged in an effort to decouple the semantics of the network addressing scheme. In this thesis, we approach this issue from two perspectives, namely, a non-disruptive (i.e., evolutionary) solution to the current Internet and a clean-slate approach for Future Internet. In the first scenario, we analyze the Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol (LISP) as it is currently one of the strongest solutions to the semantic overload issue. However, its adoption is hindered by existing problems in the proposed mapping systems. Herein, we propose the LISP Redundancy Protocol (LRP) aimed to complement the LISP framework and strengthen feasibility of deployment, while at the same time, minimize mapping table size, latency time and maximize reachability in the network. In the second scenario, we explore TARIFA a Next Generation Internet architecture and introduce a novel service-centric addressing scheme which aims to overcome the issues related to routing and semantic overload of IP addresses.A pesar de los numerosos esfuerzos de estandarización, los problemas de semántica continúan en efecto en muchas subáreas de networking. La inabilidad de intercambiar data sin ambiguedad entre sistemas es un problema que limita la interoperabilidad semántica. En esta tesis, abordamos los problemas de semántica en dos áreas: (i) la gestión de configuración y (ii) arquitecturas de direccionamiento. El hecho que hace el estudio en estas áreas de interés, es que los problemas de semántica datan desde los inicios del Internet. Sin embargo, mientras las redes continúan creciendo en tamaño y complejidad, los mecanismos desplegados dejan de ser escalabales y prácticos. Una de las tareas más complejas y esenciales en la gestión de redes es la configuración de equipos. La falta de mecanismos estándar para la modificación y control de la configuración de equipos ha llevado al uso continuado y extendido de interfaces por líneas de comando (CLI). Desafortunadamente, las CLIs son generalmente, específicos por fabricante y dispositivo. En el contexto de redes heterogéneas--es decir, redes típicamente compuestas por múltiples dispositivos de distintos fabricantes--el uso de varias CLIs trae consigo serios problemas de operación, administración y gestión. En consecuencia, los administradores de red se ven forzados a adquirir experiencia en el manejo específico de múltiples tecnologías y además, a mantenerse continuamente actualizados en la medida en que nuevas funcionalidades o tecnologías emergen, o bien con actualizaciones de sistemas operativos. En general, la utilización de mecanismos propietarios no permite compartir conocimientos de forma consistente a lo largo de plataformas heterogéneas, ni reutilizar configuraciones con el objetivo de alcanzar la completa automatización de tareas de configuración--que son típicamente requeridas en el área de gestión autonómica. Debido a esta heterogeneidad, las CLIs suelen proporcionar una función de ayuda que fundamentalmente aporta información para la interpretación semántica del entorno de configuración de un fabricante. La gran cantidad de información que un administrador debe aprender y manejar, hace de la extracción de información y otras formas de análisis de lenguaje natural del campo de Inteligencia Artificial, potenciales herramientas para la configuración de equipos en entornos heterogéneos. Esta tesis presenta el diseño y especificaciones de implementación del primer sistema de extracción de información basada en ontologías desde el CLI de dispositivos de red, para la automatización y abstracción de configuraciones. Por otra parte, la denominada sobrecarga semántica de direcciones IP--en donde, las direcciones son identificadores y localizadores al mismo tiempo--es una de las principales limitaciones sobre mobilidad, multi-homing y escalabilidad del sistema de enrutamiento. Por esta razón, numerosas propuestas han emergido en un esfuerzo por desacoplar la semántica del esquema de direccionamiento de las redes actuales. En esta tesis, abordamos este problema desde dos perspectivas, la primera de ellas una aproximación no-disruptiva (es decir, evolucionaria) al problema del Internet actual y la segunda, una nueva propuesta en torno a futuras arquitecturas del Internet. En el primer escenario, analizamos el protocolo LISP (del inglés, Locator/Identifier Separation Protocol) ya que es en efecto, una de las soluciones con mayor potencial para la resolucion del problema de semántica. Sin embargo, su adopción está limitada por problemas en los sistemas de mapeo propuestos. En esta tesis, proponemos LRP (del inglés, LISP Redundancy Protocol) un protocolo destinado a complementar LISP e incrementar la factibilidad de despliegue, a la vez que, reduce el tamaño de las tablas de mapeo, tiempo de latencia y maximiza accesibilidad.     Next generation control of transport networks

    It is widely understood by telecom operators and industry analysts that bandwidth demand is increasing dramatically, year on year, with typical growth figures of 50% for Internet-based traffic [5]. This trend means that the consumers will have both a wide variety of devices attaching to their networks and a range of high bandwidth service requirements. The corresponding impact is the effect on the traffic engineered network (often referred to as the “transport network”) to ensure that the current rate of growth of network traffic is supported and meets predicted future demands. As traffic demands increase and newer services continuously arise, novel network elements are needed to provide more flexibility, scalability, resilience, and adaptability to today’s transport network. The transport network provides transparent traffic engineered communication of user, application, and device traffic between attached clients (software and hardware) and establishing and maintaining point-to-point or point-to-multipoint connections. The research documented in this thesis was based on three initial research questions posed while performing research at British Telecom research labs and investigating control of transport networks of future transport networks: 1. How can we meet Internet bandwidth growth yet minimise network costs? 2. Which enabling network technologies might be leveraged to control network layers and functions cooperatively, instead of separated network layer and technology control? 3. Is it possible to utilise both centralised and distributed control mechanisms for automation and traffic optimisation? This thesis aims to provide the classification, motivation, invention, and evolution of a next generation control framework for transport networks, and special consideration of delivering broadcast video traffic to UK subscribers. The document outlines pertinent telecoms technology and current art, how requirements I gathered, and research I conducted, and by which the transport control framework functional components are identified and selected, and by which method the architecture was implemented and applied to key research projects requiring next generation control capabilities, both at British Telecom and the wider research community. Finally, in the closing chapters, the thesis outlines the next steps for ongoing research and development of the transport network framework and key areas for further study

    dissertationThe next generation mobile network (i.e., 5G network) is expected to host emerging use cases that have a wide range of requirements; from Internet of Things (IoT) devices that prefer low-overhead and scalable network to remote machine operation or remote healthcare services that require reliable end-to-end communications. Improving scalability and reliability is among the most important challenges of designing the next generation mobile architecture. The current (4G) mobile core network heavily relies on hardware-based proprietary components. The core networks are expensive and therefore are available in limited locations in the country. This leads to a high end-to-end latency due to the long latency between base stations and the mobile core, and limitations in having innovations and an evolvable network. Moreover, at the protocol level the current mobile network architecture was designed for a limited number of smart-phones streaming a large amount of high quality traffic but not a massive number of low-capability devices sending small and sporadic traffic. This results in high-overhead control and data planes in the mobile core network that are not suitable for a massive number of future Internet-of-Things (IoT) devices. In terms of reliability, network operators already deployed multiple monitoring sys- tems to detect service disruptions and fix problems when they occur. However, detecting all service disruptions is challenging. First, there is a complex relationship between the network status and user-perceived service experience. Second, service disruptions could happen because of reasons that are beyond the network itself. With technology advancements in Software-defined Network (SDN) and Network Func- tion Virtualization (NFV), the next generation mobile network is expected to be NFV-based and deployed on NFV platforms. However, in contrast to telecom-grade hardware with built-in redundancy, commodity off-the-shell (COTS) hardware in NFV platforms often can't be comparable in term of reliability. Availability of Telecom-grade mobile core network hardwares is typically 99.999% (i.e., "five-9s" availability) while most NFV platforms only guarantee "three-9s" availability - orders of magnitude less reliable. Therefore, an NFV-based mobile core network needs extra mechanisms to guarantee its availability. This Ph.D. dissertation focuses on using SDN/NFV, data analytics and distributed system techniques to enhance scalability and reliability of the next generation mobile core network. The dissertation makes the following contributions. First, it presents SMORE, a practical offloading architecture that reduces end-to-end latency and enables new functionalities in mobile networks. It then presents SIMECA, a light-weight and scalable mobile core network designed for a massive number of future IoT devices. Second, it presents ABSENCE, a passive service monitoring system using customer usage and data analytics to detect silent failures in an operational mobile network. Lastly, it presents ECHO, a distributed mobile core network architecture to improve availability of NFV-based mobile core network in public clouds

    Optimizing Flow Routing Using Network Performance Analysis

To achieve this task, the network needs to find the optimal route for data to travel by employing a particular routing system. This system has a specific job that examines each possible path for data and chooses the suitable one and transmit the data packets where it needs to go as fast as possible. In addition, it contributes to enhance the performance of network as optimal routing algorithm helps to run network efficiently. The clear performance advantage that provides by routing procedures is the faster data access. For example, the routing algorithm take a decision that determine the best route based on the location where the data is stored and the destination device that is asking for it. On the other hand, a network can handle many types of traffic simultaneously, but it cannot exceed the bandwidth allowed as the maximum data rate that the network can transmit. However, the overloading problem are real and still exist. To avoid this problem, the network chooses the route based on the available bandwidth space. One serious problem in the network is network link congestion and disparate load caused by elephant flows. Through forwarding elephant flows, network links will be congested with data packets causing transmission collision, congestion network, and delay in transmission. Consequently, there is not enough bandwidth for mice flows, which causes the problem of transmission delay. Traffic engineering (TE) is a network application that concerns with measuring and managing network traffic and designing feasible routing mechanisms to guide the traffic of the network for improving the utilization of network resources. The main function of traffic engineering is finding an obvious route to achieve the bandwidth requirements of the network consequently optimizing the network performance [1]. Routing optimization has a key role in traffic engineering by finding efficient routes to achieve the desired performance of the network [2]. Furthermore, routing optimization can be considered as one of the primary goals in the field of networks. In particular, this goal is directly related to traffic engineering, as it is based on one particular idea: to achieve that traffic is routed according to accurate traffic requirements [3]. Therefore, we can say that traffic engineering is one of the applications of multiple improvements to routing; routing can also be optimized based on other factors (not just on traffic requirements). In addition, these traffic requirements are variable depending on analyzed dataset that considered if it is data or traffic control. In this regard, the logical central view of the Software Defined Network (SDN) controller facilitates many aspects compared to traditional routing. The main challenge in all network types is performance optimization, but the situation is different in SDN because the technique is changed from distributed approach to a centralized one. The characteristics of SDN such as centralized control and programmability make the possibility of performing not only routing in traditional distributed manner but also routing in centralized manner. The first advantage of centralized routing using SDN is the existence of a path to exchange information between the controller and infrastructure devices. Consequently, the controller has the information for the entire network, flexible routing can be achieved. The second advantage is related to dynamical control of routing due to the capability of each device to change its configuration based on the controller commands [4]. This thesis begins with a wide review of the importance of network performance analysis and its role for understanding network behavior, and how it contributes to improve the performance of the network. Furthermore, it clarifies the existing solutions of network performance optimization using machine learning (ML) techniques in traditional networks and SDN environment. In addition, it highlights recent and ongoing studies of the problem of unfair use of network resources by a particular flow (elephant flow) and the possible solutions to solve this problem. Existing solutions are predominantly, flow routing-based and do not consider the relationship between network performance analysis and flow characterization and how to take advantage of it to optimize flow routing by finding the convenient path for each type of flow. Therefore, attention is given to find a method that may describe the flow based on network performance analysis and how to utilize this method for managing network performance efficiently and find the possible integration for the traffic controlling in SDN. To this purpose, characteristics of network flows is identified as a mechanism which may give insight into the diversity in flow features based on performance metrics and provide the possibility of traffic engineering enhancement using SDN environment. Two different feature sets with respect to network performance metrics are employed to characterize network traffic. Applying unsupervised machine learning techniques including Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and k-means cluster analysis to derive a traffic performance-based clustering model. Afterward, thresholding-based flow identification paradigm has been built using pre-defined parameters and thresholds. Finally, the resulting data clusters are integrated within a unified SDN architectural solution, which improves network management by finding the best flow routing based on the type of flow, to be evaluated against a number of traffic data sources and different performance experiments. The validation process of the novel framework performance has been done by making a performance comparison between SDN-Ryu controller and the proposed SDN-external application based on three factors: throughput, bandwidth,and data transfer rate by conducting two experiments. Furthermore, the proposed method has been validated by using different Data Centre Network (DCN) topologies to demonstrate the effectiveness of the network traffic management solution. The overall validation metrics shows real gains, the results show that 70% of the time, it has high performance with different flows. The proposed routing SDN traffic-engineering paradigm for a particular flow therefore, dynamically provisions network resources among different flow types
