    The Thermal-Constrained Real-Time Systems Design on Multi-Core Platforms -- An Analytical Approach

    Over the past decades, the shrinking transistor size enabled more transistors to be integrated into an IC chip, to achieve higher and higher computing performances. However, the semiconductor industry is now reaching a saturation point of Moore’s Law largely due to soaring power consumption and heat dissipation, among other factors. High chip temperature not only significantly increases packing/cooling cost, degrades system performance and reliability, but also increases the energy consumption and even damages the chip permanently. Although designing 2D and even 3D multi-core processors helps to lower the power/thermal barrier for single-core architectures by exploring the thread/process level parallelism, the higher power density and longer heat removal path has made the thermal problem substantially more challenging, surpassing the heat dissipation capability of traditional cooling mechanisms such as cooling fan, heat sink, heat spread, etc., in the design of new generations of computing systems. As a result, dynamic thermal management (DTM), i.e. to control the thermal behavior by dynamically varying computing performance and workload allocation on an IC chip, has been well-recognized as an effective strategy to deal with the thermal challenges. Different from many existing DTM heuristics that are based on simple intuitions, we seek to address the thermal problems through a rigorous analytical approach, to achieve the high predictability requirement in real-time system design. In this regard, we have made a number of important contributions. First, we develop a series of lemmas and theorems that are general enough to uncover the fundamental principles and characteristics with regard to the thermal model, peak temperature identification and peak temperature reduction, which are key to thermal-constrained real-time computer system design. Second, we develop a design-time frequency and voltage oscillating approach on multi-core platforms, which can greatly enhance the system throughput and its service capacity. Third, different from the traditional workload balancing approach, we develop a thermal-balancing approach that can substantially improve the energy efficiency and task partitioning feasibility, especially when the system utilization is high or with a tight temperature constraint. The significance of our research is that, not only can our proposed algorithms on throughput maximization and energy conservation outperform existing work significantly as demonstrated in our extensive experimental results, the theoretical results in our research are very general and can greatly benefit other thermal-related research

    Energy-efficient thermal-aware multiprocessor scheduling for real-time tasks using TCPNs

    We present an energy-effcient thermal-aware real-time global scheduler for a set of hard real-time (HRT) tasks running on a multiprocessor system. This global scheduler fulfills the thermal and temporal constraints by handling two independent variables, the task allocation time and the selection of clock frequency. To achieve its goal, the proposed scheduler is split into two stages. An off-line stage, based on a deadline partitioning scheme, computes the cycles that the HRT tasks must run per deadline interval at the minimum clock frequency to save energy while honoring the temporal and thermal constraints, and computes the maximum frequency at which the system can run below the maximum temperature. Then, an on-line, event-driven stage performs global task allocation applying a Fixed-Priority Zero-Laxity policy, reducing the overhead of quantum-based or interval-based global schedulers. The on-line stage embodies an adaptive scheduler that accepts or rejects soft RT aperiodic tasks throttling CPU frequency to the upper lowest available one to minimize power consumption while meeting time and thermal constraints. This approach leverages the best of two worlds: the off-line stage computes an ideal discrete HRT multiprocessor schedule, while the on-line stage manage soft real-time aperiodic tasks with minimum power consumption and maximum CPU utilization

    A Control-Theoretic Design And Analysis Framework For Resilient Hard Real-Time Systems

    We introduce a new design metric called system-resiliency which characterizes the maximum unpredictable external stresses that any hard-real-time performance mode can withstand. Our proposed systemresiliency framework addresses resiliency determination for real-time systems with physical and hardware limitations. Furthermore, our framework advises the system designer about the feasible trade-offs between external system resources for the system operating modes on a real-time system that operates in a multi-parametric resiliency environment. Modern multi-modal real-time systems degrade the system’s operational modes as a response to unpredictable external stimuli. During these mode transitions, real-time systems should demonstrate a reliable and graceful degradation of service. Many control-theoretic-based system design approaches exist. Although they permit real-time systems to operate under various physical constraints, none of them allows the system designer to predict the system-resiliency over multi-constrained operating environment. Our framework fills this gap; the proposed framework consists of two components: the design-phase and runtime control. With the design-phase analysis, the designer predicts the behavior of the real-time system for variable external conditions. Also, the runtime controller navigates the system to the best desired target using advanced control-theoretic techniques. Further, our framework addresses the system resiliency of both uniprocessor and multicore processor systems. As a proof of concept, we first introduce a design metric called thermal-resiliency, which characterizes the maximum external thermal stress that any hard-real-time performance mode can withstand. We verify the thermal-resiliency for the external thermal stresses on a uniprocessor system through a physical testbed. We show how to solve some of the issues and challenges of designing predictable real-time systems that guarantee hard deadlines even under transitions between modes in an unpredictable thermal environment where environmental temperature may dynamically change using our new metric. We extend the derivation of thermal-resiliency to multicore systems and determine the limitations of external thermal stress that any hard-real-time performance mode can withstand. Our control-theoretic framework allows the system designer to allocate asymmetric processing resources upon a multicore proiii cessor and still maintain thermal constraints. In addition, we develop real-time-scheduling sub-components that are necessary to fully implement our framework; toward this goal, we investigate the potential utility of parallelization for meeting real-time constraints and minimizing energy. Under malleable gang scheduling of implicit-deadline sporadic tasks upon multiprocessors, we show the non-necessity of dynamic voltage/frequency regarding optimality of our scheduling problem. We adapt the canonical schedule for DVFS multiprocessor platforms and propose a polynomial-time optimal processor/frequency-selection algorithm. Finally, we verify the correctness of our framework through multiple measurable physical and hardware constraints and complete our work on developing a generalized framework

    Integrated life cycle design : application to concrete multi-dwelling buildings

    This work examines the application of ILCD (Integrated Life Cycle Design), to Swedish concrete multi-dwelling buildings. The aim of the study is to look into methodological issues of ILCD and to present the fundamental attributes of dwelling buildings and how they relate to concrete as a structural material. Methods for prediction of two important life cycle attributes: the economy and energy use are examined and verified using comparisons of the real performance of some existing modern Swedish concrete dwelling buildings. Potential differences in life cycle performance are examined in parameter studies. A qualitative method to asses indoor environment in existing building is employed in one case

    Run-time Resource Management in CMPs Handling Multiple Aging Mechanisms

    Abstract—Run-time resource management is fundamental for efficient execution of workloads on Chip Multiprocessors. Application- and system-level requirements (e.g. on performance vs. power vs. lifetime reliability) are generally conflicting each other, and any decision on resource assignment, such as core allocation or frequency tuning, may positively affect some of them while penalizing some others. Resource assignment decisions can be perceived in few instants of time on performance and power consumption, but not on lifetime reliability. In fact, this latter changes very slowly based on the accumulation of effects of various decisions over a long time horizon. Moreover, aging mechanisms are various and have different causes; most of them, such as Electromigration (EM), are subject to temperature levels, while Thermal Cycling (TC) is caused mainly by temperature variations (both amplitude and frequency). Mitigating only EM may negatively affect TC and vice versa. We propose a resource orchestration strategy to balance the performance and power consumption constraints in the short-term and EM and TC aging in the long-term. Experimental results show that the proposed approach improves the average Mean Time To Failure at least by 17% and 20% w.r.t. EM and TC, respectively, while providing same performance level of the nominal counterpart and guaranteeing the power budget

    Thermal Aware Design Automation of the Electronic Control System for Autonomous Vehicles

    The autonomous vehicle (AV) technology, due to its tremendous social and economical benefits, is transforming the entire world in the coming decades. However, significant technical challenges still need to be overcome until AVs can be safely, reliably, and massively deployed. Temperature plays a key role in the safety and reliability of an AV, not only because a vehicle is subjected to extreme operating temperatures but also because the increasing computations demand more powerful IC chips, which can lead to higher operating temperature and large thermal gradient. In particular, as the underpinning technology for AV, artificial intelligence (AI) requires substantially increased computation and memory resources, which have been growing exponentially through recent years and further exacerbated the thermal problems. High operating temperature and large thermal gradient can reduce the performance, degrade the reliability, and even cause an IC to fail catastrophically. We believe that dealing with thermal issues must be coupled closely in the design phase of the AVs’ electronic control system (ECS). To this end, first, we study how to map vehicle applications to ECS with heterogeneous architecture to satisfy peak temperature constraints and optimize latency and system-level reliability. We present a mathematical programming model to bound the peak temperature for the ECS. We also develop an approach based on the genetic algorithm to bound the peak temperature under varying execution time scenarios and optimize the system-level reliability of the ECS. We present several computationally efficient techniques for system-level mean-time-to-failure (MTTF) computation, which show several orders-of-magnitude speed-up over the state-of-the-art method. Second, we focus on studying the thermal impacts of AI techniques. Specifically, we study how the thermal impacts for the memory bit flipping can affect the prediction accuracy of a deep neural network (DNN). We develop a neuron-level analytical sensitivity estimation framework to quantify this impact and study its effectiveness with popular DNN architectures. Third, we study the problem of incorporating thermal impacts into mapping the parameters for DNN neurons to memory banks to improve prediction accuracy. Based on our developed sensitivity metric, we develop a bin-packing-based approach to map DNN neuron parameters to memory banks with different temperature profiles. We also study the problem of identifying the optimal temperature profiles for memory systems that can minimize the thermal impacts. We show that the thermal aware mapping of DNN neuron parameters on memory banks can significantly improve the prediction accuracy at a high-temperature range than the thermal ignorant for state-of-the-art DNNs

    Integrated Life Cycle Design - Applied to concrete multi-dwelling buildings

    The objective of this work is to explore ways of enhancing the overall lifetime quality, including cost and environmental efficiency, of Swedish concrete multi-dwelling buildings. The building and its characteristics, as well as the procedures for whole life optimisation, are addressed. The methods developed are general for buildings, while the application is specific. The fundamental characteristics (attributes) of dwelling buildings are reviewed, and a set of design criteria relating to these is compiled. Furthermore, the properties of concrete with regard to the attributes are analysed. The concept of Integrated Life Cycle Design is applied as methodological platform. By integrated life cycle design the traditional design procedure, is supplemented by life cycle appraisal and methods to optimise the building with regard to several more or less interacting parameters. A pilot toolbox for integrated life cycle design of residential buildings is developed and verified. This contains a set of design criteria addressing the fundamental attributes, modules for life cycle costing, energy balance calculation, structural and acoustic pre-design, environmental assessment and feed-back routines. The environmental assessment is based on a socio-economic cost estimation, relating to energy consumption during the user phase. Energy use for production and demolition are also taken into account, but only as average values. For the concrete building frame, a full LCA model, regarding the production phase is also developed. For the ranking of technical alternatives, in relation to the priorities of the client, ?Multiple Attribute Decision Analysis?, ?MADA?, was also included in the study and in the toolbox. The Integrated Life Cycle Design toolbox is tested and further developed by the application on eight real cases. A comparative desktop study on the resulting lifecycle consequences, from different functional quality levels is also undertaken. It was concluded that integrated life cycle design may enhance the lifetime quality and cost effectiveness of buildings and thus deserves introduction in practice. The life cycle appraisal tools and data are available and calculations can be done with reasonable effort, giving reliable results. The application examples show how integrated life cycle design can guide design decisions towards the optimal building with regard to specific priorities of the client
