    Distributed control of a fault tolerant modular multilevel inverter for direct-drive wind turbine grid interfacing

    Modular generator and converter topologies are being pursued for large offshore wind turbines to achieve fault tolerance and high reliability. A centralized controller presents a single critical point of failure which has prevented a truly modular and fault tolerant system from being obtained. This study analyses the inverter circuit control requirements during normal operation and grid fault ride-through, and proposes a distributed controller design to allow inverter modules to operate independently of each other. All the modules independently estimate the grid voltage magnitude and position, and the modules are synchronised together over a CAN bus. The CAN bus is also used to interleave the PWM switching of the modules and synchronise the ADC sampling. The controller structure and algorithms are tested by laboratory experiments with respect to normal operation, initial synchronization to the grid, module fault tolerance and grid fault ride-through

    Compositional Performance Modelling with the TIPPtool

    Stochastic process algebras have been proposed as compositional specification formalisms for performance models. In this paper, we describe a tool which aims at realising all beneficial aspects of compositional performance modelling, the TIPPtool. It incorporates methods for compositional specification as well as solution, based on state-of-the-art techniques, and wrapped in a user-friendly graphical front end. Apart from highlighting the general benefits of the tool, we also discuss some lessons learned during development and application of the TIPPtool. A non-trivial model of a real life communication system serves as a case study to illustrate benefits and limitations

    Towards Practical Graph-Based Verification for an Object-Oriented Concurrency Model

    To harness the power of multi-core and distributed platforms, and to make the development of concurrent software more accessible to software engineers, different object-oriented concurrency models such as SCOOP have been proposed. Despite the practical importance of analysing SCOOP programs, there are currently no general verification approaches that operate directly on program code without additional annotations. One reason for this is the multitude of partially conflicting semantic formalisations for SCOOP (either in theory or by-implementation). Here, we propose a simple graph transformation system (GTS) based run-time semantics for SCOOP that grasps the most common features of all known semantics of the language. This run-time model is implemented in the state-of-the-art GTS tool GROOVE, which allows us to simulate, analyse, and verify a subset of SCOOP programs with respect to deadlocks and other behavioural properties. Besides proposing the first approach to verify SCOOP programs by automatic translation to GTS, we also highlight our experiences of applying GTS (and especially GROOVE) for specifying semantics in the form of a run-time model, which should be transferable to GTS models for other concurrent languages and libraries.Comment: In Proceedings GaM 2015, arXiv:1504.0244

    Modular Verification of Biological Systems

    Systems of interest in systems biology (such as metabolic pathways, signalling pathways and gene regulatory networks) often consist of a huge number of components interacting in different ways, thus exhibiting very complex behaviours. In biology, such behaviours are usually explored by means of simulation techniques applied to models defined on the basis of system observation and of hypotheses on its functioning. Model checking has also been recently applied to the analysis of biological systems. This analysis technique typically relies on a state space representation whose size, unfortunately, makes the analysis often intractable for realistic models. A method for trying to avoid the state space explosion problem is to consider a decomposition of the system, and to apply a modular verification technique. In particular, properties to be verified often concern only a small portion of the modelled system rather than the system as a whole. Hence, for each property it would be useful to be able to isolate a minimal fragment of the model that is necessary to verify such a property. In this thesis we introduce a modular verification technique in which the system of interest is described by means of an automata-based formalism, called sync-programs, that supports modular construction. Our modular verification technique is based on results of Grumberg et al.~and on their application to the theory of concurrent systems proposed by Attie and Emerson. In particular, we adapt Attie and Emerson's approach to deal with biological systems by allowing automata to synchronise by performing transitions simultaneously. Modular verification allows qualitative aspects of systems to be analysed with the guarantee that properties proved to hold in a suitable model fragment also hold in the whole model. The correctness of the verification technique is proved. The class of properties preserved is ACTL−^{-}, the universal fragment of temporal logic CTL. The preservation holds only for positive answers and negative answers are not necessarily preserved. In order to verify properties we use the NuSMV model checker, which is a well-established and efficient instrument. We provide a formal translation of sync-programs to simpler automata, which can be given as input to NuSMV. We prove the correspondence of the verification problems. We show the application of our verification technique in some biological case studies. We compare the time required to verify the property on the whole model with the time needed to verify the same property by only considering those modules which are involved in the behaviour of the system related to the property. In order to handle modelling and verification of more realistic biological scenarios, we propose also a dynamic version of our formalism. It allows entities to be created dynamically, in particular by other already running entities, as it often happens in biological systems. Moreover, multiple copies of the same entities can be present at the same time in a system. We show a correspondence of our model with Petri Nets. This has a consequence that tools developed for Petri Nets could be used also for dynamic sync-programs. Modular verification allows properties expressed as DACTL- formulae (dynamic version of ACTL-) to be veriïŹed on a portion of the model. The results of analysis of the case study of the MAP kinase cascade activated by surface and internalised EGF receptors, which consists of 143 species and 80 reactions, suggest applicability and scalability of the approach. The results raise the prospect of rendering tractable problems that are currently intractable in the verification of biological systems. In addition, we expect that the techniques developed in the thesis could be applied with profit not only to models of biological systems, but more generally to models of concurrent systems

    Refinement-based verification of sequential implementations of Stateflow charts

    Simulink/Stateflow charts are widely used in industry for the specification of control systems, which are often safety-critical. This suggests a need for a formal treatment of such models. In previous work, we have proposed a technique for automatic generation of formal models of Stateflow blocks to support refinement-based reasoning. In this article, we present a refinement strategy that supports the verification of automatically generated sequential C implementations of Stateflow charts.     Mightyl: A compositional translation from mitl to timed automata

    Metric Interval Temporal Logic (MITL) was first proposed in the early 1990s as a specification formalism for real-time systems. Apart from its appealing intuitive syntax, there are also theoretical evidences that make MITL a prime real-time counterpart of Linear Temporal Logic (LTL). Unfortunately, the tool support for MITL verification is still lacking to this day. In this paper, we propose a new construction from MITL to timed automata via very-weak one-clock alternating timed automata. Our construction subsumes the well-known construction from LTL to BĂŒchi automata by Gastin and Oddoux and yet has the additional benefits of being compositional and integrating easily with existing tools. We implement the construction in our new tool MightyL and report on experiments using Uppaal and LTSmin as back-ends

    Efficient computer-aided verification of parallel and distributed software systems

    The society is becoming increasingly dependent on applications of distributed software systems, such as controller systems and wireless telecommunications. It is very difficult to guarantee the correct operation of this kind of systems with traditional software quality assurance methods, such as code reviews and testing. Formal methods, which are based on mathematical theories, have been suggested as a solution. Unfortunately, the vast complexity of the systems and the lack of competent personnel have prevented the adoption of sophisticated methods, such as theorem proving. Computerised tools for verifying finite state asynchronous systems exist, and they been successful on locating errors in relatively small software systems. However, a direct translation of software to low-level formal models may lead to unmanageably large models or complex behaviour. Abstract models and algorithms that operate on compact high-level designs are needed to analyse larger systems. This work introduces modelling formalisms and verification methods of distributed systems, presents efficient algorithms for verifying high-level models of large software systems, including an automated method for abstracting unneeded details from systems consisting of loosely connected components, and shows how the methods can be applied in the software development industry.reviewe
