    An analytical method is presented which makes it possible to derive exact explicit expressions for the time-harmonic surface fields excited by a small circular loop antenna placed on the top surface of plane layered earth. The developed procedure leads to casting the complete integral representations for the EM field components into forms suitable for application of Cauchy's integral formula. As a result, the surface fields are expressed as sums of Hankel functions. Numerical simulations are performed to show the validity and accuracy of the proposed solution

    Half wavelength dipole antennas over stratified media

    Theoretical solutions of the fields induced by half-wavelength, horizontal, electric field dipoles (HEDS) are determined based on studies of infinitesimal, horizontal, electric field dipoles over low loss plane-stratified media. To determine these solutions, an approximation to the current distribution of a half-wavelength HED is derived and experimentally verified. Traverse and antenna measurements obtained on the Athabasca Glacier in the summer of 1971 are related to the characteristics of the transmitting antenna design, and the measurement techniques and field equipment used in the glacier trials are described and evaluated

    On the Flux Linkage between Pancake Coils in Resonance-Type Wireless Power Transfer Systems

    This work presents a series representation for the mutual inductance of two coaxial pancake coils which remains accurate in non-quasi-static regime under the hypothesis that the current in the source coil is uniformly distributed. Making use of Gegenbauer's addition theorem and a term-by-term analytical integration, the mutual inductance between two generic turns belonging to distinct coils is expressed as a sum of spherical Hankel functions with algebraic coefficients. The accuracy and efficiency of the resulting expression is proved through pertinent numerical examples

    Through-the-earth electromagnetic trapped miner location systems : a review

    "In its role of providing technical assistance to the mining industry, the Bureau of Mines' Tuscaloosa Research Center has conducted research to develop trapped miner location systems which would aid in locating miners trapped by underground mining disasters. Efforts to produce electromagnetic systems for the location of trapped miners underground and to communicate with them were surveyed, from the 1920's to 1981. Theoretical studies of through-the-earth electromagnetic transmissions are described as well as studies of the electrical characteristics of various rocks, minerals, and soil. Several trapped miner location systems are reviewed including the Westinghouse systems, the DEVELCO system, and an automated three-dimensional location system, and the phase difference of arrival technique. Tangential research, relevant to trapped miner location systems is described.     Dielectric lens antennas

    Dielectric lens antennas are attracting a renewed interest for millimeter- and submillimeter-wave applications where they become compact, especially for configurations with integrated feeds usually referred as integrated lens antennas. Lenses are very flexible and simple to design and fabricate, being a reliable alternative at these frequencies to reflector antennas. Lens target output can range from a simple collimated beam (increasing the feed directivity) to more complex multi-objective specifications. This chapter presents a review of different types of dielectric lens antennas and lens design methods. Representative lens antenna design examples are described in detail, with emphasis on homogeneous integrated lenses. A review of the different lens analysis methods is performed, followed by the discussion of relevant lens antenna implementation issues like feeding options, dielectric material characteristics, fabrication methods, and a few dedicated measurement techniques. The chapter ends with a detailed presentation of some recent application examples involving dielectric lens antennas
