    A Simulation of Wireless Sensor Network Using ZigBee

    Sensor networks have been a wide research area, during the last years. Wireless sensor networks are distributed network structures in which many sensors connect wirelessly to communicate with one another. In this paper the IEEE 802.15.4/ZigBee is used due to its low-power, rate and cost which allows the communication of two way wireless sensor network. In this paper IEEE 802.15.4 performance is analyzed based on OPNET simulator which allows the abilities of generating correct results and analysis to identify the actual behaviour of the real system. With this simulator program, the effect of performance parameters like throughput, data traffic received and data traffic sent for three system topology scenarios are presented.     ZigBee-Based wireless sensor network topologies using one and multiple coordinators

    Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have been a cost-effective and feasible solution for a wide range of applications, such as communications infrastructure, traffic networks, telecommunications systems, military operations and so forth. IEEE804.15.4 ZigBee network model is ideally suited to the constraints of WSN in terms of bandwidth, processing power and battery capacity. This paper investigated tree and mesh routing in WSN with multiple coordinators and the failure of single coordinator using OPNET Modeler v14 which is an efficient computational platform for data networks simulation. Throughput, delay, traffic received, MAC Load are studied in this system and the results showed that tree routing was better suited for WSN than mesh routing and mobility of end node in multiple coordinator network was the best

    Performance Analysis of a Hierarchical Shipboard Wireless Sensor Network

    International audienceWireless Sensor Networks (WSN) have recently gained a great attention in several applications such as environmental monitoring and target tracking. Applying this technology to shipboard monitoring systems may be a cost-effective solution to reduce the cost of wires installation and maintenance. However, wireless communications on board ships may be severely obstructed by the metallic structure of bulkheads. In this paper, we analyze the efficiency of a shipboard WSN by measurement and simulation. A measurement campaign is conducted to study the radio wave propagation and to verify the feasibility of a WSN on board a ship. Based on the measurement results, a hierarchical group-based topology for a large-scale shipboard WSN is proposed. A realistic simulation model of the ship, taking into account the environment particularities, is then performed using OPNET network simulator. Performance of the WSN architecture is evaluated using the ZigBee model. Measurement results show the feasibility of WSN technology on board ships, while simulation results show significant performance of proposed architecture in terms of end-to-end delay and packet delivery ratio

    Engine performance characteristics and evaluation of variation in the length of intake plenum

    In the engine with multipoint fuel injection system using electronically controlled fuel injectors has an intake manifold in which only the air flows and, the fuel is injected into the intake valve. Since the intake manifolds transport mainly air, the supercharging effects of the variable length intake plenum will be different from carbureted engine. Engine tests have been carried out with the aim of constituting a base study to design a new variable length intake manifold plenum. The objective in this research is to study the engine performance characteristics and to evaluate the effects of the variation in the length of intake plenum. The engine test bed used for experimental work consists of a control panel, a hydraulic dynamometer and measurement instruments to measure the parameters of engine performance characteristics. The control panel is being used to perform administrative and management operating system. Besides that, the hydraulic dynamometer was used to measure the power of an engine by using a cell filled with liquid to increase its load. Thus, measurement instrument is provided in this test to measure the as brake torque, brake power, thermal efficiency and specific fuel consumption. The results showed that the variation in the plenum length causes an improvement on the engine performance characteristics especially on the fuel consumption at high load and low engine speeds which are put forward the system using for urban roads.     Study of RF Propagation Characteristics for Wireless Sensor Networks in Railroad Environments

    The freight railroad industry in North America is exerting efforts to leverage Wireless Sensor Networks to monitor systems and components on railcars. This allows fault detection and accident prevention even while a train is moving. Railcars, constructed mostly of ferrous materials such as steel, are expected to severely impact signal propagation. To better understand this effect we first evaluated the signal characteristics when sensor nodes are placed in various locations around railcars. We used EM-Field modeling and evaluation techniques to obtain these results and found that node placement selection is critical for the node’s communication distance. As a second research area we therefore aimed at understanding the protocol requirements and limitations of current WSN technologies. Based on the results of our study we found ZigBee to be inadequate for freight WSNs and developed a solution that remedies the problems we observed. Our evaluation of this new multi-tier approach shows a significant performance and network lifetime gain, making freight train wireless sensor networks feasible

    Utilization Of A Large-Scale Wireless Sensor Network For Intrusion Detection And Border Surveillance

    To control the border more effectively, countries may deploy a detection system that enables real-time surveillance of border integrity. Events such as border crossings need to be monitored in real time so that any border entries can be noted by border security forces and destinations marked for apprehension. Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) are promising for border security surveillance because they enable enforcement teams to monitor events in the physical environment. In this work, probabilistic models have been presented to investigate senor development schemes while considering the environmental factors that affect the sensor performance. Simulation studies have been carried out using the OPNET to verify the theoretical analysis and to find an optimal node deployment scheme that is robust and efficient by incorporating geographical coordination in the design. Measures such as adding camera and range-extended antenna to each node have been investigated to improve the system performance. A prototype WSN based surveillance system has been developed to verify the proposed approach

    Water Pipeline Leakage Detection Based on Machine Learning and Wireless Sensor Networks

    The detection of water pipeline leakage is important to ensure that water supply networks can operate safely and conserve water resources. To address the lack of intelligent and the low efficiency of conventional leakage detection methods, this paper designs a leakage detection method based on machine learning and wireless sensor networks (WSNs). The system employs wireless sensors installed on pipelines to collect data and utilizes the 4G network to perform remote data transmission. A leakage triggered networking method is proposed to reduce the wireless sensor network’s energy consumption and prolong the system life cycle effectively. To enhance the precision and intelligence of leakage detection, we propose a leakage identification method that employs the intrinsic mode function, approximate entropy, and principal component analysis to construct a signal feature set and that uses a support vector machine (SVM) as a classifier to perform leakage detection. Simulation analysis and experimental results indicate that the proposed leakage identification method can effectively identify the water pipeline leakage and has lower energy consumption than the networking methods used in conventional wireless sensor networks
