    Anisotropic Surface Remeshing without Obtuse Angles

    We present a novel anisotropic surface remeshing method that can efficiently eliminate obtuse angles. Unlike previous work that can only suppress obtuse angles with expensive resampling and Lloyd-type iterations, our method relies on a simple yet efficient connectivity and geometry refinement, which can not only remove all the obtuse angles, but also preserves the original mesh connectivity as much as possible. Our method can be directly used as a post-processing step for anisotropic meshes generated from existing algorithms to improve mesh quality. We evaluate our method by testing on a variety of meshes with different geometry and topology, and comparing with representative prior work. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and efficiency of our approach

    A Constrained Resampling Strategy for Mesh Improvement

    In many geometry processing applications, it is required to improve an initial mesh in terms of multiple quality objectives. Despite the availability of several mesh generation algorithms with provable guarantees, such generated meshes may only satisfy a subset of the objectives. The conflicting nature of such objectives makes it challenging to establish similar guarantees for each combination, e.g., angle bounds and vertex count. In this paper, we describe a versatile strategy for mesh improvement by interpreting quality objectives as spatial constraints on resampling and develop a toolbox of local operators to improve the mesh while preserving desirable properties. Our strategy judiciously combines smoothing and transformation techniques allowing increased flexibility to practically achieve multiple objectives simultaneously.  We apply our strategy to both planar and surface meshes demonstrating how to simplify Delaunay meshes while preserving element quality, eliminate all obtuse angles in a complex mesh, and maximize the shortest edge length in a Voronoi tessellation far better than the state-of-the-art

    Error-Bounded and Feature Preserving Surface Remeshing with Minimal Angle Improvement

    The typical goal of surface remeshing consists in finding a mesh that is (1) geometrically faithful to the original geometry, (2) as coarse as possible to obtain a low-complexity representation and (3) free of bad elements that would hamper the desired application. In this paper, we design an algorithm to address all three optimization goals simultaneously. The user specifies desired bounds on approximation error {\delta}, minimal interior angle {\theta} and maximum mesh complexity N (number of vertices). Since such a desired mesh might not even exist, our optimization framework treats only the approximation error bound {\delta} as a hard constraint and the other two criteria as optimization goals. More specifically, we iteratively perform carefully prioritized local operators, whenever they do not violate the approximation error bound and improve the mesh otherwise. In this way our optimization framework greedily searches for the coarsest mesh with minimal interior angle above {\theta} and approximation error bounded by {\delta}. Fast runtime is enabled by a local approximation error estimation, while implicit feature preservation is obtained by specifically designed vertex relocation operators. Experiments show that our approach delivers high-quality meshes with implicitly preserved features and better balances between geometric fidelity, mesh complexity and element quality than the state-of-the-art.Comment: 14 pages, 20 figures.     Differentiable Surface Triangulation

    Triangle meshes remain the most popular data representation for surface geometry. This ubiquitous representation is essentially a hybrid one that decouples continuous vertex locations from the discrete topological triangulation. Unfortunately, the combinatorial nature of the triangulation prevents taking derivatives over the space of possible meshings of any given surface. As a result, to date, mesh processing and optimization techniques have been unable to truly take advantage of modular gradient descent components of modern optimization frameworks. In this work, we present a differentiable surface triangulation that enables optimization for any per-vertex or per-face differentiable objective function over the space of underlying surface triangulations. Our method builds on the result that any 2D triangulation can be achieved by a suitably perturbed weighted Delaunay triangulation. We translate this result into a computational algorithm by proposing a soft relaxation of the classical weighted Delaunay triangulation and optimizing over vertex weights and vertex locations. We extend the algorithm to 3D by decomposing shapes into developable sets and differentiably meshing each set with suitable boundary constraints. We demonstrate the efficacy of our method on various planar and surface meshes on a range of difficult-to-optimize objective functions.     Impact of triangle shapes using high-order discretizations and direct mesh adaptation for output error

The results indicate that for high-order discretizations, large angles do not have an adverse impact on solution accuracy. However, a correct aspect ratio is critical for accuracy for both linear and high-order discretizations. In addition, large angles are not problematic for the conditioning of the linear systems arising from discretization. They can be overcome through small increases in preconditioning costs. A direct adaptation scheme that controls the output error via mesh operations and mesh smoothing is also developed. The decision of mesh operations is solely based on output error distribution without any a priori assumption on error convergence rate. Anisotropy is introduced by evaluating the error changes due to potential edge split, and thus the anisotropies of both primal and dual solutions are taken into account. This scheme is demonstrated to produce grids with fewer degrees of freedom for a specified error level than the existing metric-based approach.by Huafei Sun.S.M

    Optimal Voronoi Tessellations with Hessian-based Anisotropy

    International audienceThis paper presents a variational method to generate cell complexes with local anisotropy conforming to the Hessian of any given convex function and for any given local mesh density. Our formulation builds upon approximation theory to offer an anisotropic extension of Centroidal Voronoi Tessellations which can be seen as a dual form of Optimal Delaunay Triangulation. We thus refer to the resulting anisotropic polytopal meshes as Optimal Voronoi Tessel-lations. Our approach sharply contrasts with previous anisotropic versions of Voronoi diagrams as it employs first-type Bregman diagrams , a generalization of power diagrams where sites are augmented with not only a scalar-valued weight but also a vector-valued shift. As such, our OVT meshes contain only convex cells with straight edges, and admit an embedded dual triangulation that is combinatorially-regular. We show the effectiveness of our technique using off-the-shelf computational geometry libraries

    dissertationOne of the fundamental building blocks of many computational sciences is the construction and use of a discretized, geometric representation of a problem domain, often referred to as a mesh. Such a discretization enables an otherwise complex domain to be represented simply, and computation to be performed over that domain with a finite number of basis elements. As mesh generation techniques have become more sophisticated over the years, focus has largely shifted to quality mesh generation techniques that guarantee or empirically generate numerically well-behaved elements. In this dissertation, the two complementary meshing subproblems of vertex placement and element creation are analyzed, both separately and together. First, a dynamic particle system achieves adaptivity over domains by inferring feature size through a new information passing algorithm. Second, a new tetrahedral algorithm is constructed that carefully combines lattice-based stenciling and mesh warping to produce guaranteed quality meshes on multimaterial volumetric domains. Finally, the ideas of lattice cleaving and dynamic particle systems are merged into a unified framework for producing guaranteed quality, unstructured and adaptive meshing of multimaterial volumetric domains

    A triangular grid generation and optimization framework for the design of free-form gridshells

    Gridshells have been widely used in various public buildings, and many of them are defined over complex free-form surfaces with complex boundaries. This emphasizes the importance of general grid generation and optimization methods in the initial design stage to achieve visually sound and easy-to-manufacture structure. In this paper, a framework is presented to generate uniform, well-shaped and fluency triangular grids for structural design over free-form surfaces, especially those with complex boundaries. The framework employs force-based algorithms and a connectivity-regularization algorithm to optimize grid quality. First, an appropriate distribution of internal points is randomly generated on the surface. Secondly, a bubble-packing method is employed to increase the uniformity of the initial point distribution, and the points are connected using Delaunay-based triangularization to produce an initial grid with rods of balanced length. Thirdly, the grid connectivity is optimized using a range of edge-operations including edge-flip, collapse and split. The optimization process features a grid relaxation objective which includes the degree of the vertices, leading to improved regularity. As a final step, the grid is relaxed to improve fluency using a net-like method. As part of its contribution, this paper, therefore, proposes a metric for fluency, which can be used to quantitatively evaluate the suitability of a given grid for architectural and structural expression. Two case-study examples are presented to demonstrate the effective execution of the grid generation and optimization framework. It is shown that by using the proposed framework, the fluency index of the grid can be improved by up to 157%
