    Get PDF
The paper presents a virtual reality modeling system based on interactive web technologies. The system's goal is to provide a user-friendly virtual environment for the development of 3D characters with an articulated structure. The interface allows the modeling of both the character's joint structure (the hierarchy) and its segment geometry (the skin). The novelty of the system consists of (1) the combination of web technologies used (VRML, Java and EAI) which provides the possibility of online modeling, (2) rules and constraints based operations and thus interface elements, (3) vertices and sets of vertices used as graphics primitives and (4) the possibility to handle and extend hierarchies based on the H-anim structure elements

A novel updating modelling methodology for free-form surface modifications in the early stages of design

    Get PDF
The paper describes the first implementation of a method in which an initial CAD model is updated from a physical model. The method is based on image-mapping in which an initial CAD model is updated from images of a soft rapid prototype model (RPM) which has been sculpted in order to carry out formal developments. The RP model is made by a 3Dimensional-colour printer, has a built-in contrasting grid composed by parallel planes in the X, Y and/or Z co-ordinates and has special consistency allowing it to be easily sculpted with hand modifications. During the sculpting process changes on the surface affect the lines on the RPM, which are the external presence of the internal grid planes and are corresponding to the initial CAD construction lines. These lines (profiles) then are visually contrasted by making use of identical perspective transformations and viewpoints for the virtual model and the RP model image. The initial CAD model is then updated by modifying the surface’s construction lines to match the lines on the RP image by moving control points, such as in the Z direction

Watermarking technologies have been proposed for many different, types of digital media. However, to this date, no viable watermarking techniques have yet emerged for the high value B-rep (i.e. Boundary Representation) models used in 3D mechanical CAD systems. In this paper, the authors propose a new approach (PO-Watermarking) that subtly changes a model's geometric representation to incorporate a 'transparent' signature. This scheme enables software applications to create fragile, or robust watermarks without changing the size of the file, or shape of the CAD model. Also discussed is the amount of information the proposed method could transparently embed into a B-rep model. The results presented demonstrate the embedding and retrieval of text strings and investigate the robustness of the approach after a variety of transformation and modifications have been carried out on the data

    Get PDF
Online virtual housing showroom is developed for the housing estate developers to promote and advertise their houses effectively. By using this method, they do not haveto build a model house for the potential buyers to evaluate their housing project. They can promote their housing by publishing it in the internet andat the same time giving the user the same experience as visiting the site. Currently, the potential buyers have to visit the site to see and evaluate the house offered by the developers. The needs to visit the site lead to time consuming for the potential buyers. They have to spend their time to visit a few sites in order to see and evaluate the houses before making the decision. There are a lot of websites offered to promote the housing estate; however, they did not have an ability to explore the house itself. The potential buyers still have to visit the site in order to have a closer look of the house. The approach taken for handling this project will be divided into two parts; 3D model development and website development. The modeling stage will developed a model house that will be able to view thoroughly inside and outside the house. The model will be integrated with web page developed to create online housing showroom. As conclusion, the application is beneficial for both housing estate developers and potential buyers because it helps the buyers save their time and cost to make purchasing decision and offers the housing estate developers an interactive promotion strategy for their housing project

Uniform Micro-Patterning of an Arbitrary Surface

According to the literature, creating specific micro-level patterns on some surfaces can significantly reduce friction. To this effect, a method is presented to create a regular pattern of micro-level indentations on any irregular surface. Creating a uniform pattern on a regular surface is possible using commercial CAD software, where regular surface is the surface obtained by extrusion or revolution of a 2D sketch along any curve. But, it is complicated and often incorrect for irregular surfaces. The thesis presents the approach followed to create parameterized regular patterns on arbitrary surfaces. Three different algorithms are presented, each achieving a progressively increased quality solution. The last and best method provides a set of points with their corresponding normals to the surface to enable the creation of the patterning feature. The algorithm reads an STL file, a format neutral output of any CAD software and implements the method on the approximated surface. Each facet surface upon which the pattern has to be created is sliced by planes at specific distances from each other. The intersections of the facets and the planes are calculated and chains are formed from the intersections in each plane. Points are interpolated at the required pitch in different chains formed at the intersection of a single plane and the facets. This procedure is repeated for each plane. Thus, a pattern of points of specified pitch distance that can be as low as microns can be generated. Given specifications of a machine, this method generates the X, Y, and Z translations and the axis rotation angles needed to generate a g-code specific to a micro-milling machine. This code can be used directly for any metal removing process that has to create micro-level indentations on an arbitrary surface. If instead, the features are protrusions on some irregular surface, then the resultant points obtained with the developed approach can be used to apply the pattern at each of the identified locations

3D Visualization Modules for Chemical Engineering – A Web-Based Approach Using Java and OpenGL

    Get PDF
The main objective of this work is to implement web-based educational modules for chemical engineering students. Phase behavior is a topic with which the students seem to struggle with, particularly for mixtures, where a 2-D representation of the phase diagram falls far short of the understanding a 3-D model can provide. Using the platform-independence of Java and the graphics capability of OpenGL, three phase diagram Java applets have been developed. Users can view these web-based 3D applets by installing a plug-in. These modules provide users with an ability to rotate the 3D models, slice through them, zoom into them and view their various 2D projections. Also, a molecular simulation applet for measuring chemical potential of binary mixtures has been developed, using a Java-based molecular simulation application-programming interface (API). First, the thesis presents a brief overview of phase diagrams and explains why modeling them using computer graphics is useful. While visualization involves the merging of data with the display of geometric objects through computer graphics, it is important to study the software issues involved in web-based visualization. The paper explains the visualization framework by describing the visualization pipeline and then using it as a guideline for the development of the modules. Next, the paper describes the development of the molecular simulation applet using a molecular simulation API - Etomica. The Java applet provides for dynamic modification and interrogation of the simulation, while it is in progress, which enables students to see directly the effect of changing state conditions or molecular interactions on the behavior of the molecules and on the outcome of the simulation. It is hoped that by using these web-based 3D phase diagrams the chemical engineering students would gain a better understanding of the complicated 3D models, making this package a useful instructional aid. It is also hoped that the molecular simulation applet would be an effective tool to help students understand molecular simulations

The matter that lies beneath the smooth and shining surface of stuccoes of the Serpotta family, who used to work in Sicily from 1670 to 1730, has been thoroughly studied in previous papers, disclosing the deep, even if empirical, knowledge of materials science that guided the artists in creating their master- works. In this work the attention is focused on the solid perspective and on the scenographic sculpture by Giacomo Serpotta, who is acknowledged as the leading exponent of the School. The study deals with some particular works of the artist, the so-called "teatrini" (Toy Theater), made by him for the San Lorenzo Oratory in Palermo. On the basis of archive documents and previous analogical photogrammetric plotting, integrated with digital solutions and methodologies of computer- based technologies, the study investigates and interprets the geometric-formal genesis of the examined works of art, until the prototyping of the whole scenic apparatus.peer-reviewe
