    Performance of Wavelet-based Multiresolution Motion Estimation for Inbetweeningin Old Animated Films

    This  paper  investigates the  performance  of  wavelet-based multiresolution  motion  estimation (MRME)  for  inbetweening  in  old  animated films  using  three different  MRME  schemes.  The  three  schemes  are:  coarse-to fine with a wavelet-based MRME, one of Zhang's MRMEs, and an MRME in the spatial domain.  In order to make a performance comparison of these MRME  schemes,  two  video  sequences were  used  for  a  simulation.  The  experimental results  show  that  the  coarse-to-fine  method  performed  better  than  Zhang's  MRME  and  the  MRME in the spatial domain. The evaluation results  on block size 9x9 indicate that the coarse-to-fine method had an average peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) of  23.48 dB for the first sequence and 29.84 for the second sequence

    An adaptive multiresolution modification of the H.263 video coding algorithm

    An adaptive multiresolution approach for video coding is presented. The algorithm uses the information content to determine the resolution of the video to be encoded. An important advantage of the algorithm is that the codec can maintain a very stable frame rate with reasonable image quality during scene change and provide better quality video when the motion is less rapid. Simulation results show that the modified H.263 coder, using the proposed algorithm, can maintaining better image quality and a more steady frame rate than the TMN 5 algorithm at low bit-rate.published_or_final_versio

    Multiresolution example-based depth image restoration

    In this paper we present a new method for superresolution of depth video sequences using high resolution color video. Here we assume that the depth sequence does not contain outlier points which can be present in the depth images. Our method is based on multiresolution decomposition, and uses multiple frames to search for a most similar depth segments to improve the resolution of the current frame. First step is the wavelet decomposition of both color and depth images. Scaling images of the depth wavelet decomposition, are superresolved using previous and future frames of the depth video sequence, due to their different nature. On the other side wavelet band are improved using both previous frames of the wavelet bands and wavelet bands of color images since similar edges might appear in both images. Our method shows significant improvements over some recent depth images interpolation methods

    Super Resolution of Wavelet-Encoded Images and Videos

    In this dissertation, we address the multiframe super resolution reconstruction problem for wavelet-encoded images and videos. The goal of multiframe super resolution is to obtain one or more high resolution images by fusing a sequence of degraded or aliased low resolution images of the same scene. Since the low resolution images may be unaligned, a registration step is required before super resolution reconstruction. Therefore, we first explore in-band (i.e. in the wavelet-domain) image registration; then, investigate super resolution. Our motivation for analyzing the image registration and super resolution problems in the wavelet domain is the growing trend in wavelet-encoded imaging, and wavelet-encoding for image/video compression. Due to drawbacks of widely used discrete cosine transform in image and video compression, a considerable amount of literature is devoted to wavelet-based methods. However, since wavelets are shift-variant, existing methods cannot utilize wavelet subbands efficiently. In order to overcome this drawback, we establish and explore the direct relationship between the subbands under a translational shift, for image registration and super resolution. We then employ our devised in-band methodology, in a motion compensated video compression framework, to demonstrate the effective usage of wavelet subbands. Super resolution can also be used as a post-processing step in video compression in order to decrease the size of the video files to be compressed, with downsampling added as a pre-processing step. Therefore, we present a video compression scheme that utilizes super resolution to reconstruct the high frequency information lost during downsampling. In addition, super resolution is a crucial post-processing step for satellite imagery, due to the fact that it is hard to update imaging devices after a satellite is launched. Thus, we also demonstrate the usage of our devised methods in enhancing resolution of pansharpened multispectral images

    Mesh-based video coding for low bit-rate communications

    In this paper, a new method for low bit-rate content-adaptive mesh-based video coding is proposed. Intra-frame coding of this method employs feature map extraction for node distribution at specific threshold levels to achieve higher density placement of initial nodes for regions that contain high frequency features and conversely sparse placement of initial nodes for smooth regions. Insignificant nodes are largely removed using a subsequent node elimination scheme. The Hilbert scan is then applied before quantization and entropy coding to reduce amount of transmitted information. For moving images, both node position and color parameters of only a subset of nodes may change from frame to frame. It is sufficient to transmit only these changed parameters. The proposed method is well-suited for video coding at very low bit rates, as processing results demonstrate that it provides good subjective and objective image quality at a lower number of required bits

    State-of-the-Art and Trends in Scalable Video Compression with Wavelet Based Approaches

    3noScalable Video Coding (SVC) differs form traditional single point approaches mainly because it allows to encode in a unique bit stream several working points corresponding to different quality, picture size and frame rate. This work describes the current state-of-the-art in SVC, focusing on wavelet based motion-compensated approaches (WSVC). It reviews individual components that have been designed to address the problem over the years and how such components are typically combined to achieve meaningful WSVC architectures. Coding schemes which mainly differ from the space-time order in which the wavelet transforms operate are here compared, discussing strengths and weaknesses of the resulting implementations. An evaluation of the achievable coding performances is provided considering the reference architectures studied and developed by ISO/MPEG in its exploration on WSVC. The paper also attempts to draw a list of major differences between wavelet based solutions and the SVC standard jointly targeted by ITU and ISO/MPEG. A major emphasis is devoted to a promising WSVC solution, named STP-tool, which presents architectural similarities with respect to the SVC standard.     A virtual reality system using the concentric mosaic: Construction, rendering, and data compression

    This paper proposes a new image-based rendering (IBR) technique called "concentric mosaic" for virtual reality applications. IBR using the plenoptic function is an efficient technique for rendering new views of a scene from a collection of sample images previously captured. It provides much better image quality and lower computational requirement for rendering than conventional three-dimensional (3-D) model-building approaches. The concentric mosaic is a 3-D plenoptic function with viewpoints constrained on a plane. Compared with other more sophisticated four-dimensional plenoptic functions such as the light field and the lumigraph, the file size of a concentric mosaic is much smaller. In contrast to a panorama, the concentric mosaic allows users to move freely in a circular region and observe significant parallax and lighting changes without recovering the geometric and photometric scene models. The rendering of concentric mosaics is very efficient, and involves the reordering and interpolating of previously captured slit images in the concentric mosaic. It typically consists of hundreds of high-resolution images which consume a significant amount of storage and bandwidth for transmission. An MPEG-like compression algorithm is therefore proposed in this paper taking into account the access patterns and redundancy of the mosaic images. The compression algorithms of two equivalent representations of the concentric mosaic, namely the multiperspective panoramas and the normal setup sequence, are investigated.
