    How Good are Humans at Native Language Identification? A Case Study on Italian L2 writings

We performed two tests aimed at exploring the human baseline for the task in which test takers had to identify the writers’ L1 relying only on scripts written in Italian by English, French, German and Spanish native speakers.     This study presents the first Native Language Identification (NLI) study for L2 Portuguese.We used a sub-set of the NLI-PT dataset, containing texts written by speakers of five different native languages: Chinese, English, German, Italian, and Spanish.We explore the linguistic annotations available in NLI-PT to extract a range of (morpho-)syntactic features and apply NLI classification methods to predict the native language of the authors. The AISD task is concerned with identifying the original author of an anonymous document from a group of candidate authors. However, AISD techniques are not applicable to the authorship identification of multi-author documents (AIMD). Unlike AISD, where each document is written by one single author, AIMD focuses on handling multi-author documents. Due to the combinatoric nature of documents, AIMD lacks the ground truth information - that is, information on writing and non-writing authors in a multi-author document - which makes this problem more challenging to solve. Previous AIMD solutions have a number of limitations: (i) the best stylometry-based AIMD solution has a low accuracy, less than 30%; (ii) increasing the number of co-authors of papers adversely affects the performance of AIMD solutions; and (iii) AIMD solutions were not designed to handle the non-writing authors (NWAs). However, NWAs exist in real-world cases - that is, there are papers for which not every co-author listed has contributed as a writer. This paper proposes an AIMD framework called the Co-Authorship Graph that can be used to (i) capture the stylistic information of each author in a corpus of multi-author documents and (ii) make a multi-label prediction for a multi-author query document. We conducted extensive experimental studies on one synthetic and three real-world corpora. Experimental results show that our proposed framework (i) significantly outperformed competitive techniques; (ii) can effectively handle a larger number of co-authors in comparison with competitive techniques; and (iii) can effectively handle NWAs in multi-author documents.This work was supported in part by the Digital Economy Promotion Agency under Project MP-62-0003, and in part by the Thailand Research Fund and Office of the Higher Education Commission under Grant MRG6180266.Published versio

    The Application of Forensic Linguistics in Cybercrime Investigations

    Forensic linguistics is the application of linguistic knowledge and theory to forensic, legal, or criminal contexts. This article sets out some of the ways the forensic linguists can and do contribute to cybercrime investigations, as well as indicating how a basic knowledge of linguistics can be of use to investigators. This article introduces both investigative and evidentiary applications, including comparative authorship analysis, sociolinguistic profiling, and the determination of meaning. Through a discussion of casework and research this article aims to increase awareness and provide an introduction into the field of forensic linguistics, and its potential applications within the field of cybercrime. This article will focus on native language influence detection as an example of an area of forensic linguistic research and methodology that can be applied in cybercrime casework, discussing both the research and its findings, and demonstrating potential application

    "Is There Choice in Non-Native Voice?" Linguistic Feature Engineering and a Variationist Perspective in Automatic Native Language Identification

    Is it possible to infer the native language of an author from a non-native text? Can we perform this task fully automatically? The interest in answers to these questions led to the emergence of a research field called Native Language Identification (NLI) in the first decade of this century. The requirement to automatically identify a particular property based on some language data situates the task in the intersection between computer science and linguistics, or in the context of computational linguistics, which combines both disciplines. This thesis targets several relevant research questions in the context of NLI. In particular, what is the role of surface features and more abstract linguistic cues? How to combine different sets of features, and how to optimize the resulting large models? Do the findings generalize across different data sets? Can we benefit from considering the task in the light of the language variation theory? In order to approach these questions, we conduct a range of quantitative and qualitative explorations, employing different machine learning techniques. We show how linguistic insight can advance technology, and how technology can advance linguistic insight, constituting a fruitful and promising interplay

    We present the first comprehensive study of Native Language Identification (NLI) applied to text written in languages other than English, using data from six languages. NLI is the task of predicting an author's first language using only their writings in a second language, with applications in Second Language Acquisition and forensic linguistics. Most research to date has focused on English but there is a need to apply NLI to other languages, not only to gauge its applicability but also to aid in teaching research for other emerging languages. With this goal, we identify six typologically very different sources of non-English second language data and conduct six experiments using a set of commonly used features. Our first two experiments evaluate our features and corpora, showing that the features perform well and at similar rates across languages. The third experiment compares non-native and native control data, showing that they can be discerned with 95 per cent accuracy. Our fourth experiment provides a cross-linguistic assessment of how the degree of syntactic data encoded in part-of-speech tags affects their efficiency as classification features, finding that most differences between first language groups lie in the ordering of the most basic word categories. We also tackle two questions that have not previously been addressed for NLI. Other work in NLI has shown that ensembles of classifiers over feature types work well and in our final experiment we use such an oracle classifier to derive an upper limit for classification accuracy with our feature set. We also present an analysis examining feature diversity, aiming to estimate the degree of overlap and complementarity between our chosen features employing an association measure for binary data.
