    Feature Extraction and Recognition for Human Action Recognition

    How to automatically label videos containing human motions is the task of human action recognition. Traditional human action recognition algorithms use the RGB videos as input, and it is a challenging task because of the large intra-class variations of actions, cluttered background, possible camera movement, and illumination variations. Recently, the introduction of cost-effective depth cameras provides a new possibility to address difficult issues. However, it also brings new challenges such as noisy depth maps and time alignment. In this dissertation, effective and computationally efficient feature extraction and recognition algorithms are proposed for human action recognition. At the feature extraction step, two novel spatial-temporal feature descriptors are proposed which can be combined with local feature detectors. The first proposed descriptor is the Shape and Motion Local Ternary Pattern (SMltp) descriptor which can dramatically reduced the number of features generated by dense sampling without sacrificing the accuracy. In addition, the Center-Symmetric Motion Local Ternary Pattern (CS-Mltp) descriptor is proposed, which describes the spatial and temporal gradients-like features. Both descriptors (SMltp and CS-Mltp) take advantage of the Local Binary Pattern (LBP) texture operator in terms of tolerance to illumination change, robustness in homogeneous region and computational efficiency. For better feature representation, this dissertation presents a new Dictionary Learning (DL) method to learn an overcomplete set of representative vectors (atoms) so that any input feature can be approximated by a linear combination of these atoms with minimum reconstruction error. Instead of simultaneously learning one overcomplete dictionary for all classes, we learn class-specific sub-dictionaries to increase the discrimination. In addition, the group sparsity and the geometry constraint are added to the learning process to further increase the discriminative power, so that features are well reconstructed by atoms from the same class and features from the same class with high similarity will be forced to have similar coefficients. To evaluate the proposed algorithms, three applications including single view action recognition, distributed multi-view action recognition, and RGB-D action recognition have been explored. Experimental results on benchmark datasets and comparative analyses with the state-of-the-art methods show the effectiveness and merits of the proposed algorithms

    Grassmann Learning for Recognition and Classification

    Computational performance associated with high-dimensional data is a common challenge for real-world classification and recognition systems. Subspace learning has received considerable attention as a means of finding an efficient low-dimensional representation that leads to better classification and efficient processing. A Grassmann manifold is a space that promotes smooth surfaces, where points represent subspaces and the relationship between points is defined by a mapping of an orthogonal matrix. Grassmann learning involves embedding high dimensional subspaces and kernelizing the embedding onto a projection space where distance computations can be effectively performed. In this dissertation, Grassmann learning and its benefits towards action classification and face recognition in terms of accuracy and performance are investigated and evaluated. Grassmannian Sparse Representation (GSR) and Grassmannian Spectral Regression (GRASP) are proposed as Grassmann inspired subspace learning algorithms. GSR is a novel subspace learning algorithm that combines the benefits of Grassmann manifolds with sparse representations using least squares loss §¤1-norm minimization for improved classification. GRASP is a novel subspace learning algorithm that leverages the benefits of Grassmann manifolds and Spectral Regression in a framework that supports high discrimination between classes and achieves computational benefits by using manifold modeling and avoiding eigen-decomposition. The effectiveness of GSR and GRASP is demonstrated for computationally intensive classification problems: (a) multi-view action classification using the IXMAS Multi-View dataset, the i3DPost Multi-View dataset, and the WVU Multi-View dataset, (b) 3D action classification using the MSRAction3D dataset and MSRGesture3D dataset, and (c) face recognition using the ATT Face Database, Labeled Faces in the Wild (LFW), and the Extended Yale Face Database B (YALE). Additional contributions include the definition of Motion History Surfaces (MHS) and Motion Depth Surfaces (MDS) as descriptors suitable for activity representations in video sequences and 3D depth sequences. An in-depth analysis of Grassmann metrics is applied on high dimensional data with different levels of noise and data distributions which reveals that standardized Grassmann kernels are favorable over geodesic metrics on a Grassmann manifold. Finally, an extensive performance analysis is made that supports Grassmann subspace learning as an effective approach for classification and recognition

    Improving Multi-view Facial Expression Recognition in Unconstrained Environments

    Facial expression and emotion-related research has been a longstanding activity in psychology while computerized/automatic facial expression recognition of emotion is a relative recent and still emerging but active research area. Although many automatic computer systems have been proposed to address facial expression recognition problems, the majority of them fail to cope with the requirements of many practical application scenarios arising from either environmental factors or unexpected behavioural bias introduced by the users, such as illumination conditions and large head pose variation to the camera. In this thesis, two of the most influential and common issues raised in practical application scenarios when applying automatic facial expression recognition system are comprehensively explored and investigated. Through a series of experiments carried out under a proposed texture-based system framework for multi-view facial expression recognition, several novel texture feature representations are introduced for implementing multi-view facial expression recognition systems in practical environments, for which the state-of-the-art performance is achieved. In addition, a variety of novel categorization schemes for the configurations of an automatic multi-view facial expression recognition system is presented to address the impractical discrete categorization of facial expression of emotions in real-world scenarios. A significant improvement is observed when using the proposed categorizations in the proposed system framework using a novel implementation of the block based local ternary pattern approach

    Object detection, recognition and re-identification in video footage

    There has been a significant number of security concerns in recent times; as a result, security cameras have been installed to monitor activities and to prevent crimes in most public places. These analysis are done either through video analytic or forensic analysis operations on human observations. To this end, within the research context of this thesis, a proactive machine vision based military recognition system has been developed to help monitor activities in the military environment. The proposed object detection, recognition and re-identification systems have been presented in this thesis. A novel technique for military personnel recognition is presented in this thesis. Initially the detected camouflaged personnel are segmented using a grabcut segmentation algorithm. Since in general a camouflaged personnel's uniform appears to be similar both at the top and the bottom of the body, an image patch is initially extracted from the segmented foreground image and used as the region of interest. Subsequently the colour and texture features are extracted from each patch and used for classification. A second approach for personnel recognition is proposed through the recognition of the badge on the cap of a military person. A feature matching metric based on the extracted Speed Up Robust Features (SURF) from the badge on a personnel's cap enabled the recognition of the personnel's arm of service. A state-of-the-art technique for recognising vehicle types irrespective of their view angle is also presented in this thesis. Vehicles are initially detected and segmented using a Gaussian Mixture Model (GMM) based foreground/background segmentation algorithm. A Canny Edge Detection (CED) stage, followed by morphological operations are used as pre-processing stage to help enhance foreground vehicular object detection and segmentation. Subsequently, Region, Histogram Oriented Gradient (HOG) and Local Binary Pattern (LBP) features are extracted from the refined foreground vehicle object and used as features for vehicle type recognition. Two different datasets with variant views of front/rear and angle are used and combined for testing the proposed technique. For night-time video analytics and forensics, the thesis presents a novel approach to pedestrian detection and vehicle type recognition. A novel feature acquisition technique named, CENTROG, is proposed for pedestrian detection and vehicle type recognition in this thesis. Thermal images containing pedestrians and vehicular objects are used to analyse the performance of the proposed algorithms. The video is initially segmented using a GMM based foreground object segmentation algorithm. A CED based pre-processing step is used to enhance segmentation accuracy prior using Census Transforms for initial feature extraction. HOG features are then extracted from the Census transformed images and used for detection and recognition respectively of human and vehicular objects in thermal images. Finally, a novel technique for people re-identification is proposed in this thesis based on using low-level colour features and mid-level attributes. The low-level colour histogram bin values were normalised to 0 and 1. A publicly available dataset (VIPeR) and a self constructed dataset have been used in the experiments conducted with 7 clothing attributes and low-level colour histogram features. These 7 attributes are detected using features extracted from 5 different regions of a detected human object using an SVM classifier. The low-level colour features were extracted from the regions of a detected human object. These 5 regions are obtained by human object segmentation and subsequent body part sub-division. People are re-identified by computing the Euclidean distance between a probe and the gallery image sets. The experiments conducted using SVM classifier and Euclidean distance has proven that the proposed techniques attained all of the aforementioned goals. The colour and texture features proposed for camouflage military personnel recognition surpasses the state-of-the-art methods. Similarly, experiments prove that combining features performed best when recognising vehicles in different views subsequent to initial training based on multi-views. In the same vein, the proposed CENTROG technique performed better than the state-of-the-art CENTRIST technique for both pedestrian detection and vehicle type recognition at night-time using thermal images. Finally, we show that the proposed 7 mid-level attributes and the low-level features results in improved performance accuracy for people re-identification

    A comprehensive survey of multi-view video summarization

    [EN] There has been an exponential growth in the amount of visual data on a daily basis acquired from single or multi-view surveillance camera networks. This massive amount of data requires efficient mechanisms such as video summarization to ensure that only significant data are reported and the redundancy is reduced. Multi-view video summarization (MVS) is a less redundant and more concise way of providing information from the video content of all the cameras in the form of either keyframes or video segments. This paper presents an overview of the existing strategies proposed for MVS, including their advantages and drawbacks. Our survey covers the genericsteps in MVS, such as the pre-processing of video data, feature extraction, and post-processing followed by summary generation. We also describe the datasets that are available for the evaluation of MVS. Finally, we examine the major current issues related to MVS and put forward the recommendations for future research(1).     Attention Mechanism for Recognition in Computer Vision

    It has been proven that humans do not focus their attention on an entire scene at once when they perform a recognition task. Instead, they pay attention to the most important parts of the scene to extract the most discriminative information. Inspired by this observation, in this dissertation, the importance of attention mechanism in recognition tasks in computer vision is studied by designing novel attention-based models. In specific, four scenarios are investigated that represent the most important aspects of attention mechanism.First, an attention-based model is designed to reduce the visual features\u27 dimensionality by selectively processing only a small subset of the data. We study this aspect of the attention mechanism in a framework based on object recognition in distributed camera networks. Second, an attention-based image retrieval system (i.e., person re-identification) is proposed which learns to focus on the most discriminative regions of the person\u27s image and process those regions with higher computation power using a deep convolutional neural network. Furthermore, we show how visualizing the attention maps can make deep neural networks more interpretable. In other words, by visualizing the attention maps we can observe the regions of the input image where the neural network relies on, in order to make a decision. Third, a model for estimating the importance of the objects in a scene based on a given task is proposed. More specifically, the proposed model estimates the importance of the road users that a driver (or an autonomous vehicle) should pay attention to in a driving scenario in order to have safe navigation. In this scenario, the attention estimation is the final output of the model. Fourth, an attention-based module and a new loss function in a meta-learning based few-shot learning system is proposed in order to incorporate the context of the task into the feature representations of the samples and increasing the few-shot recognition accuracy.In this dissertation, we showed that attention can be multi-facet and studied the attention mechanism from the perspectives of feature selection, reducing the computational cost, interpretable deep learning models, task-driven importance estimation, and context incorporation.     Computational Approaches To Anti-Toxin Therapies And Biomarker Identification

    This work describes the fundamental study of two bacterial toxins with computational methods, the rational design of a potent inhibitor using molecular dynamics, as well as the development of two bioinformatic methods for mining genomic data. Clostridium difficile is an opportunistic bacillus which produces two large glucosylating toxins. These toxins, TcdA and TcdB cause severe intestinal damage. As Clostridium difficile harbors considerable antibiotic resistance, one treatment strategy is to prevent the tissue damage that the toxins cause. The catalytic glucosyltransferase domain of TcdA and TcdB was studied using molecular dynamics in the presence of both a protein-protein binding partner and several substrates. These experiments were combined with lead optimization techniques to create a potent irreversible inhibitor which protects 95% of cells in vitro. Dynamics studies on a TcdB cysteine protease domain were performed to an allosteric communication pathway. Comparative analysis of the static and dynamic properties of the TcdA and TcdB glucosyltransferase domains were carried out to determine the basis for the differential lethality of these toxins. Large scale biological data is readily available in the post-genomic era, but it can be difficult to effectively use that data. Two bioinformatics methods were developed to process whole-genome data. Software was developed to return all genes containing a motif in single genome. This provides a list of genes which may be within the same regulatory network or targeted by a specific DNA binding factor. A second bioinformatic method was created to link the data from genome-wide association studies (GWAS) to specific genes. GWAS studies are frequently subjected to statistical analysis, but mutations are rarely investigated structurally. HyDn-SNP-S allows a researcher to find mutations in a gene that correlate to a GWAS studied phenotype. Across human DNA polymerases, this resulted in strongly predictive haplotypes for breast and prostate cancer. Molecular dynamics applied to DNA Polymerase Lambda suggested a structural explanation for the decrease in polymerase fidelity with that mutant.
