    Specific Growth Rate And Sliding Mode Stabilization Of Fed-Batch Processes

    The subject of this paper is specific growth rate control of a fed-batch biotechnological process. The objective of the paper is to present comfortable tools and mathematical methodology that permits control stabilization of biotechnological processes with synchronized utilization of different mathematical approaches. The control design is based on the equivalent transformations to Brunovsky normal form of an enlarged Monod-Wang model, on a chattering optimal control and sliding mode control solutions. This approach permits new precise control solutions for stabilization of continuous and fed-batch cultivation processes. In the paper are investigated Monod-Wang kinetic model and it singular Monod form. The simpler Monod and Monod-Wang models are restricted forms of Wang-Yerusalimsky model. The Wang-Yerusalimsky kinetic model could be accepted as a common model. A second order sliding mode is investigated and compared with standard sliding mode algorithms. The sliding mode control permits to solve the control problems with smaller quantity of priory information and elimination of parameters and measurements noises

    AI-based Diagnostics for Fault Detection and Isolation in Process Equipment Service

    Recent industry requires efficient fault discovering and isolation solutions in process equipment service. This problem is a real-world problem of typically ill-defined systems, hard to model, with large-scale solution spaces. Design of precise models is impractical, too expensive, or often non-existent. Support service of equipment requires generating models that can analyze the equipment data, interpreting the past behavior and predicting the future one. These problems pose a challenge to traditional modeling techniques and represent a great opportunity for the application of AI-based methodologies, which enable us to deal with imprecise, uncertain data and incomplete domain knowledge typically encountered in real-world applications. In this paper the state of the art, theoretical background of conventional and AI-based techniques in support of service tasks and illustration of some applications to process equipment service on bio-ethanol production process are shortly described

    Process analytical technology in food biotechnology

    Biotechnology is an area where precision and reproducibility are vital. This is due to the fact that products are often in form of food, pharmaceutical or cosmetic products and therefore very close to the human being. To avoid human error during the production or the evaluation of the quality of a product and to increase the optimal utilization of raw materials, a very high amount of automation is desired. Tools in the food and chemical industry that aim to reach this degree of higher automation are summarized in an initiative called Process Analytical Technology (PAT). Within the scope of the PAT, is to provide new measurement technologies for the purpose of closed loop control in biotechnological processes. These processes are the most demanding processes in regards of control issues due to their very often biological rate-determining component. Most important for an automation attempt is deep process knowledge, which can only be achieved via appropriate measurements. These measurements can either be carried out directly, measuring a crucial physical value, or if not accessible either due to the lack of technology or a complicated sample state, via a soft-sensor.Even after several years the ideal aim of the PAT initiative is not fully implemented in the industry and in many production processes. On the one hand a lot effort still needs to be put into the development of more general algorithms which are more easy to implement and especially more reliable. On the other hand, not all the available advances in this field are employed yet. The potential users seem to stick to approved methods and show certain reservations towards new technologies.Die Biotechnologie ist ein Wissenschaftsbereich, in dem hohe Genauigkeit und Wiederholbarkeit eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Dies ist der Tatsache geschuldet, dass die hergestellten Produkte sehr oft den Bereichen Nahrungsmitteln, Pharmazeutika oder Kosmetik angehöhren und daher besonders den Menschen beeinflussen. Um den menschlichen Fehler bei der Produktion zu vermeiden, die Qualität eines Produktes zu sichern und die optimale Verwertung der Rohmaterialen zu gewährleisten, wird ein besonders hohes Maß an Automation angestrebt. Die Werkzeuge, die in der Nahrungsmittel- und chemischen Industrie hierfür zum Einsatz kommen, werden in der Process Analytical Technology (PAT) Initiative zusammengefasst. Ziel der PAT ist die Entwicklung zuverlässiger neuer Methoden, um Prozesse zu beschreiben und eine automatische Regelungsstrategie zu realisieren. Biotechnologische Prozesse gehören hierbei zu den aufwändigsten Regelungsaufgaben, da in den meisten Fällen eine biologische Komponente der entscheidende Faktor ist. Entscheidend für eine erfolgreiche Regelungsstrategie ist ein hohes Maß an Prozessverständnis. Dieses kann entweder durch eine direkte Messung der entscheidenden physikalischen, chemischen oder biologischen Größen gewonnen werden oder durch einen SoftSensor. Zusammengefasst zeigt sich, dass das finale Ziel der PAT Initiative auch nach einigen Jahren des Propagierens weder komplett in der Industrie noch bei vielen Produktionsprozessen angekommen ist. Auf der einen Seite liegt dies mit Sicherheit an der Tatsache, dass noch viel Arbeit in die Generalisierung von Algorithmen gesteckt werden muss. Diese müsse einfacher zu implementieren und vor allem noch zuverlässiger in der Funktionsweise sein. Auf der anderen Seite wurden jedoch auch Algorithmen, Regelungsstrategien und eigne Ansätze für einen neuartigen Sensor sowie einen Soft-Sensors vorgestellt, die großes Potential zeigen. Nicht zuletzt müssen die möglichen Anwender neue Strategien einsetzen und Vorbehalte gegenüber unbekannten Technologien ablegen

    Process monitoring and control are fundamental to all processes; this holds especially for bioprocesses, due to their complex nature. Usually, bioprocesses deal with living cells, which have their own regulatory systems. It helps to adjust the cell to its environmental condition. This must not be the optimal condition that the cell needs to produce whatever is desired. Therefore, a close monitoring of the cell and its environment is essential to provide optimal conditions for production. Without measurement, no information of the current process state is obtained. In this book, methods and techniques are provided for the monitoring and control of bioprocesses. From new developments for sensors, the application of spectroscopy and modelling approaches, the estimation and observer implementation for ethanol production and the development and scale-up of various bioprocesses and their closed loop control information are presented. The processes discussed here are very diverse. The major applications are cultivation processes, where microorganisms were grown, but also an incubation process of bird’s eggs, as well as an indoor climate control for humans, will be discussed. Altogether, in 12 chapters, nine original research papers and three reviews are presented

    Biotests in Ecotoxicology: Current Practice and Problems

    Nowadays ecotoxicology plays the role of a theoretician – methodical unifying centre for the optimization of man – biosphere relations and sustainable existence of life on the Earth. The main basis for its development is the classical toxicology—studies of chemical compounds’ effects on man, but ecotoxicology is the original part, following it. According to the modern concept, the ecotoxicology is a science for migration, transformation and utilization of different toxic ingredients (with organic, inorganic or organic-mineral chemical nature; with natural biotic or abiotic origin and artificial, mainly anthropogenic origin) in the environment and their impact on Macro- biological systems with different levels of integration as groups of individuals, population, community, ecosystem, etc. studied in ecology. In this chapter, the types of ecotoxicological tests are discussed in detail with a set of examples about used species, advantages and disadvantages of different types of toxicity testing. The application of exposed natural ecosystems or man-made analogue systems is also commented as the environmentally more realistic approach for ecotoxicological testing. These test systems are increasingly becoming in aquatic ecotoxicology practice, but they are contemporary challenge in terrestrial testing. The development of test systems for realistic assessment of contaminant toxicity is essential for the efficient control of human influence on the environment

    11th International Conference on Predictive Modelling in Food: book of abstracts

    It is our great pleasure to welcome you in Bragança, Portugal, for the 11th International Conference of Predictive Modelling in Food (ICPMF11). Since 1992, ten ICPMF editions have taken place, providing a forum for the exchange of ideas, identification of research needs and novel approaches for the advancement of predictive modelling towards ensuring safety and quality of foods. Bragança is a typically-Portuguese old town (Romanic origin dates back to the 10th century), located by the Natural Park of Montesinho – one of the wildest forest zones of Europe – and the Douro Valley – the third oldest protected wine region in the world; and surrounded by traditional villages of a distinctive rustic beauty. Bragança houses several traditional industries producing a myriad of local foods, such as cheese, fermented meats, wine, chestnuts and honey, which provide substantial economic sustainability to the region. ICPMF11 reunites food researchers, stakeholders, risk assessors and users of predictive models to present recent developments and trends in modelling approaches for food quality, safety and sustainability. We succeeded to gather a significant number of delegates from over the world to participate in a comprehensive scientific programme that includes keynote lectures, oral communications and posters, allocated in sessions focusing on: . Advances in predictive microbiology modelling . Predictive modelling in innovative food processing and preservation technologies . Advances in microbial dynamics and interactions . Advances in software and database tools . Meta-analysis protocols and applications . Advances in risk assessment methods and integration of omics techniques . Advances in predictive modelling in food quality and safety . Predictive mycology . Individual cell and whole-cell modelling Apart from those, ICPMF11 features for the first time a special session dedicated to “Innovative approaches for ensuring safety of traditional foods” and the Round Table: “Assuring the Safety of Traditional Foods: A Scientific Contribution to Protecting our Cultural Heritage”. We, as food researchers based in a Mediterranean mountain region, are aware that the production of traditional foods plays a key role in the development of rural regions, since the agricultural commodities used as raw materials are generally produced locally, allowing and stimulating local commercialisation, thus contributing to a sustainable environment, and employment in rural populations. It was inspiring for us to have received many submissions from both developed and developing countries on the valorisation of traditional foods through the application of up-to-date modelling research. Besides that, one morning workshop and three afternoon tutorials were programmed during the day before the scientific programme. The workshop “How to benefit from the Risk Assessment Modelling and Knowledge Integration Platform (RAKIP)” was organised by Matthias Filter. The parallel tutorials “Towards an integrated predictive software map: Practical examples of use of predictive microbiology software tools for food safety and quality”; “Advanced methods in predictive microbiology” and “Topics in quantitative microbial risk assessment using R” were organised by Fernando Pérez-Rodríguez, Pablo Fernández, Alberto Garre and Mariem Ellouze; by Lihan Huang, Cheng-An Hwang and Vasco Cadavez; and by Patrick Njage and Ana Sofia Ribeiro Duarte, respectively. We thank these organisers for their proposals. Abstracts, reviewed by the ICPMF11 Scientific Committee, are published in the present Book of Abstracts while peer-reviewed original research articles will be invited to be published in ICPMF11 Special Issues in the International Journal of Food Microbiology and Microbial Risk Analysis. To stimulate the participation of postgraduate students and young researchers, two kinds of awards were arranged: the Young Researcher Best Oral Presentation prizes, sponsored by Elsevier; and the Developing Scientist Best Poster prizes, sponsored by the International Committee on Food Microbiology and Hygiene (ICFMH) of the International Union of Microbiological Societies (IUMS). For the first time, this ICPMF edition gives out two awards for the Senior Researcher Best Oral Presentation, sponsored by the open-access journal Foods – MDPI. In addition to the scientific programme, we prepared an exciting social programme for delegates to appreciate the rich culture, gastronomy and traditions of Bragança, w includes welcome reception, live music, tasting of regional food and a gala dinner in the Castle of Bragança.     Book of abstracts of the 10th International Chemical and Biological Engineering Conference: CHEMPOR 2008

    This book contains the extended abstracts presented at the 10th International Chemical and Biological Engineering Conference - CHEMPOR 2008, held in Braga, Portugal, over 3 days, from the 4th to the 6th of September, 2008. Previous editions took place in Lisboa (1975, 1889, 1998), Braga (1978), Póvoa de Varzim (1981), Coimbra (1985, 2005), Porto (1993), and Aveiro (2001). The conference was jointly organized by the University of Minho, “Ordem dos Engenheiros”, and the IBB - Institute for Biotechnology and Bioengineering with the usual support of the “Sociedade Portuguesa de Química” and, by the first time, of the “Sociedade Portuguesa de Biotecnologia”. Thirty years elapsed since CHEMPOR was held at the University of Minho, organized by T.R. Bott, D. Allen, A. Bridgwater, J.J.B. Romero, L.J.S. Soares and J.D.R.S. Pinheiro. We are fortunate to have Profs. Bott, Soares and Pinheiro in the Honor Committee of this 10th edition, under the high Patronage of his Excellency the President of the Portuguese Republic, Prof. Aníbal Cavaco Silva. The opening ceremony will confer Prof. Bott with a “Long Term Achievement” award acknowledging the important contribution Prof. Bott brought along more than 30 years to the development of the Chemical Engineering science, to the launch of CHEMPOR series and specially to the University of Minho. Prof. Bott’s inaugural lecture will address the importance of effective energy management in processing operations, particularly in the effectiveness of heat recovery and the associated reduction in greenhouse gas emission from combustion processes. The CHEMPOR series traditionally brings together both young and established researchers and end users to discuss recent developments in different areas of Chemical Engineering. The scope of this edition is broadening out by including the Biological Engineering research. One of the major core areas of the conference program is life quality, due to the importance that Chemical and Biological Engineering plays in this area. “Integration of Life Sciences & Engineering” and “Sustainable Process-Product Development through Green Chemistry” are two of the leading themes with papers addressing such important issues. This is complemented with additional leading themes including “Advancing the Chemical and Biological Engineering Fundamentals”, “Multi-Scale and/or Multi-Disciplinary Approach to Process-Product Innovation”, “Systematic Methods and Tools for Managing the Complexity”, and “Educating Chemical and Biological Engineers for Coming Challenges” which define the extended abstracts arrangements along this book. A total of 516 extended abstracts are included in the book, consisting of 7 invited lecturers, 15 keynote, 105 short oral presentations given in 5 parallel sessions, along with 6 slots for viewing 389 poster presentations. Full papers are jointly included in the companion Proceedings in CD-ROM. All papers have been reviewed and we are grateful to the members of scientific and organizing committees for their evaluations. It was an intensive task since 610 submitted abstracts from 45 countries were received. It has been an honor for us to contribute to setting up CHEMPOR 2008 during almost two years.
