The workshop included a presentation session and working sessions in which the particular topics on early aspects were discussed. The primary goal of the workshop was to focus on challenges to defining methodical software development processes for aspects from early on in the software life cycle and explore the potential of proposed methods and techniques to scale up to industrial applications

    Optimistic replication

    Data replication is a key technology in distributed data sharing systems, enabling higher availability and performance. This paper surveys optimistic replication algorithms that allow replica contents to diverge in the short term, in order to support concurrent work practices and to tolerate failures in low-quality communication links. The importance of such techniques is increasing as collaboration through wide-area and mobile networks becomes popular. Optimistic replication techniques are different from traditional “pessimistic ” ones. Instead of synchronous replica coordination, an optimistic algorithm propagates changes in the background, discovers conflicts after they happen and reaches agreement on the final contents incrementally. We explore the solution space for optimistic replication algorithms. This paper identifies key challenges facing optimistic replication systems — ordering operations, detecting and resolving conflicts, propagating changes efficiently, and bounding replica divergence — and provides a comprehensive survey of techniques developed for addressing these challenges

    Scalable service-oriented replication with flexible consistency guarantee in the cloud

    Replication techniques are widely applied in and for cloud to improve scalability and availability. In such context, the well-understood problem is how to guarantee consistency amongst different replicas and govern the trade-off between consistency and scalability requirements. Such requirements are often related to specific services and can vary considerably in the cloud. However, a major drawback of existing service-oriented replication approaches is that they only allow either restricted consistency or none at all. Consequently, service-oriented systems based on such replication techniques may violate consistency requirements or not scale well. In this paper, we present a Scalable Service Oriented Replication (SSOR) solution, a middleware that is capable of satisfying applications’ consistency requirements when replicating cloud-based services. We introduce new formalism for describing services in service-oriented replication. We propose the notion of consistency regions and relevant service oriented requirements policies, by which trading between consistency and scalability requirements can be handled within regions. We solve the associated sub-problem of atomic broadcasting by introducing a Multi-fixed Sequencers Protocol (MSP), which is a requirements aware variation of the traditional fixed sequencer approach. We also present a Region-based Election Protocol (REP) that elastically balances the workload amongst sequencers. Finally, we experimentally evaluate our approach under different loads, to show that the proposed approach achieves better scalability with more flexible consistency constraints when compared with the state-of-the-art replication technique

    Evolution of Model-Based System Engineering Methodologies for the Design of Space Systems in the Advanced Stages of the Project (Phases B-C)

    The main topic of the present work is addressed to the evaluation of the possible improvements that can be achieved with the integration of Model Based System Engineering Methodologies in the advanced phases of space project. In particular a model based approach will be proposed for two main aspects directly affecting the design phases of complex systems. The first one is represented by the management of design options that becomes difficult to monitor as the project proceeds, increasing the amount of data to take into consideration. The other one is represented by the integration between Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) techniques and a Model Based System Engineering (MBSE) environment. The aim of the research activity concerns the feasibility of such connection in order to assess actual advantages and possible drawbacks. In this last case the objective is to show how the Multidisciplinary Design Optimization (MDO) methods may be managed in the context of a MBSE environment with respect to the traditional design approach. In particular this analysis is addressed to the demonstration of the benefits of MBSE methodology and MDO techniques considering a space system reference case. In the first part of the thesis a briefly description of the problem statement is introduced to better explain the subjects of the following chapters. In particular the reasons and the related purposes that have animated this work are considered. In the next sec..on the state of the art about the considered approach is presented, providing a background for the following activities. In this context a wider analysis of the motivations and thesis objectives is considered. The following chapters deals with the survey and critical assessment of the main work related to this thesis. The analysis, design and implementation of the proposed framework are considered in the next sections. At the end of this part the results obtained are presented without arguing about the related benefits or drawbacks, which are considered in the following. A critical assessment of the results is then presented, analyzing the main contributions and related disadvantages with respect to the current approaches. In the next sec..on the incoming activities and further developments are presented. The final part concerns at last the summary conclusions of the work done

    Scalable and Reliable Middlebox Deployment

    Middleboxes are pervasive in modern computer networks providing functionalities beyond mere packet forwarding. Load balancers, intrusion detection systems, and network address translators are typical examples of middleboxes. Despite their benefits, middleboxes come with several challenges with respect to their scalability and reliability. The goal of this thesis is to devise middlebox deployment solutions that are cost effective, scalable, and fault tolerant. The thesis includes three main contributions: First, distributed service function chaining with multiple instances of a middlebox deployed on different physical servers to optimize resource usage; Second, Constellation, a geo-distributed middlebox framework enabling a middlebox application to operate with high performance across wide area networks; Third, a fault tolerant service function chaining system

    Inter-Destination Multimedia Synchronization; Schemes, Use Cases and Standardization

    Traditionally, the media consumption model has been a passive and isolated activity. However, the advent of media streaming technologies, interactive social applications, and synchronous communications, as well as the convergence between these three developments, point to an evolution towards dynamic shared media experiences. In this new model, geographically distributed groups of consumers, independently of their location and the nature of their end-devices, can be immersed in a common virtual networked environment in which they can share multimedia services, interact and collaborate in real-time within the context of simultaneous media content consumption. In most of these multimedia services and applications, apart from the well-known intra and inter-stream synchronization techniques that are important inside the consumers playout devices, also the synchronization of the playout processes between several distributed receivers, known as multipoint, group or Inter-destination multimedia synchronization (IDMS), becomes essential. Due to the increasing popularity of social networking, this type of multimedia synchronization has gained in popularity in recent years. Although Social TV is perhaps the most prominent use case in which IDMS is useful, in this paper we present up to 19 use cases for IDMS, each one having its own synchronization requirements. Different approaches used in the (recent) past by researchers to achieve IDMS are described and compared.
