Ancient climate changes and Andes uplift, rather than Last Glacial Maximum, affected distribution and genetic diversity patterns of the southernmost mycoheterotrophic plant Arachnitis uniflora Phil. (Corsiaceae)
Arachnitis uniflora (Corsiaceae) is a mycoheterotrophic plant native to South America that grows in tropical semi-humid forests of Peru and Bolivia, in the temperate Andean-Patagonian forests of Argentina and Chile, and in the moorlands of Malvinas/Falkland Islands. This widely distributed and disjunct species offers the opportunity to explore the dynamics of evolutionary processes using phylogeographic approaches, spatio-temporal and paleodistribution reconstructions; these tools allow us to test how ancient geological events and climate changes occurred in the Miocene-Pliocene and how the more recent Pleistocene events affected diversification, demography, and genetic diversity patterns over space and time. We sampled 28 sites, covering the whole geographic range of Arachnitis uniflora. We amplified and sequenced the internal transcribed spacer (ITS), 18S rRNA, and 26S rRNA nuclear regions in 141 individuals, and the plastid 16S rRNA gene in a subset of 90 individuals. In order to reconstruct the evolutionary history of the species, we performed phylogeographic, dating analyses, spatio-temporal diffusion models, and species paleo-distribution projections. Arachnitis uniflora has an ancient origin and diversified during the Late Miocene, splitting into two genetic groups named the Northern and Patagonian groups. Haplotype diversification of both groups dated about late Miocene and early Pliocene. We detected demographic expansion at the early Pleistocene, and most diversifications and colonizations occurred before the LGM. Paleo-distribution modelling predicted few changes of the species distribution from 800 Mya to the present, showing only a range expansion at the east during the LGM. Four areas of high genetic diversity were identified suggesting refugial areas where the species persisted. Orogeny and climate changes promoted by the Andes uplift during the Late Miocene produced the main ancient genetic divergence due to the formation of the Arid Diagonal. Most diversification, colonizations, and demographic processes occurred from early Pliocene to the beginning of the Pleistocene before the Great Patagonian Glaciation, revealing a low influence of the LGM glaciations on the species evolutionary history.Fil: Renny, Mauricio Eduardo. Application of a Blockchain Enabled Model in Disaster Aids Supply Network Resilience
The disaster area is a dynamic environment. The bottleneck in distributing the supplies may be from the damaged infrastructure or the unavailability of accurate information about the required amounts. The success of the disaster response network is based on collaboration, coordination, sovereignty, and equality in relief distribution. Therefore, a reliable dynamic communication system is required to facilitate the interactions, enhance the knowledge for the relief operation, prioritize, and coordinate the goods distribution. One of the promising innovative technologies is blockchain technology which enables transparent, secure, and real-time information exchange and automation through smart contracts. This study analyzes the application of blockchain technology on disaster management resilience. The influences of this most promising application on the disaster aid supply network resilience combined with the Internet of Things (IoT) and Dynamic Voltage Frequency Scaling (DVFS) algorithm are explored employing a network-based simulation. The theoretical analysis reveals an advancement in disaster-aids supply network strategies using smart contracts for collaborations. The simulation study indicates an enhance in resilience by improvement in collaboration and communication due to more time-efficient processing for disaster supply management. Long-term effects of oestrogenic effluent exposure on wild fish populations
This thesis was submitted for the award of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University London.Freshwater streams in the developed world are becoming increasingly dominated by treated wastewater. Continually discharged into most surface waters, these effluents contain a suite of bioactive man-made chemicals, including steroid and non-steroid oestrogens, which have been found to feminise male fish, skew sex ratios, and cause reproductive failure. However, the consequences of reproductive disruption remain poorly explored at the population level. This thesis was initiated to evaluate how oestrogenic contaminants might influence the population ecology of a common cyprinid, the roach (Rutilus rutilus). An investigation encompassing population structure, multigenerational exposure and the role of additional drivers of fish population dynamics was undertaken to contextualise the effects of oestrogenic effluents on wild fish populations. Population genetic analysis of UK roach found they exhibit moderately high levels of genetic diversity and significant intra-river genetic structure. Genetically differentiated local subpopulations indicate little interbreeding and limited gene flow, consistent with a typical metapopulation that has not been homogenised by restocking. Similarly, my thesis demonstrates no significant relationship between effluent exposure and Ne (effective population size) or genetic diversity of roach populations, albeit a 65% reduction in Ne is possible at highly polluted sites. River stretches contaminated with high levels of effluent can support breeding populations, which recruit successfully with minimal immigration from less contaminated sites. Multigenerational effects of effluent exposure on roach were also evaluated experimentally using reproductive success from breeding adults over three generations. Lifelong exposure to 100% treated effluent resulted in feminised phenotypes (ovarian cavities and intersex condition) in males but no observable effect on females. Additionally, despite gonadal disruption in males and effluent exposure of their mothers, I found no detrimental effect on their ability to compete with control fish. Instead, reproductive success was primarily determined by body size. A novel approach considering additional fish population drivers suggests that genetic diversity and species diversity decline in parallel with an increasing presence of disturbed land, when combined with geographical isolation. In conclusion, group assemblage and genetic structure of fish populations appears multi-causal and cannot be disaggregated, such that a single environmental characteristic can be shown to drive patterns of population success.NERC (NE/G019355/1) and DEFRA
Improving Message Dissemination in Opportunistic Networks
Data transmission has become a need in various fields, like in social networks with the diverse interaction applications, or in the scientific and engineering areas where for example the use of sensors to capture data is growing, or in emergency situations where there is the imperative need to have a communication system to coordinate rescue operations. Wireless networks have been able to solve these issues to a great extent, but what can we do when a fixed supporting infrastructure is not available or becomes inoperative because of saturation? Opportunistic wireless networks are an alternative to consider in these situations, since their operation does not depend on the existence of a telecommunications infrastructure but they provide connectivity through the organized cooperation of users.
This research thesis focuses on these types of networks and is aimed at improving the dissemination of information in opportunistic networks analyzing the main causes that influence the performance of data transmission. Opportunistic networks do not depend on a fixed topology but depend on the number and mobility of users, the type and quantity of information generated and sent, as well as the physical characteristics of the mobile devices that users have to transmit the data. The combination of these elements impacts on the duration of the contact time between mobile users, directly affecting the information delivery probability.
This thesis starts by presenting a thorough "state of the art" study where we present the most important contributions related to this area and the solutions offered for the evaluation of the opportunistic networks, such as simulation models, routing protocols, simulation tools, among others. After offering this broad background, we evaluate the consumption of the resources of the mobile devices that affect the performance of the the applications of opportunistic networks, both from the energetic and the memory point of view.
Next, we analyze the performance of opportunistic networks considering either pedestrian and vehicular environments. The studied approaches include the use of additional fixed nodes and different data transmission technologies, to improve the duration of the contact between mobile devices.
Finally, we propose a diffusion scheme to improve the performance of data transmission based on extending the duration of the contact time and the likelihood that users will collaborate in this process. This approach is complemented by the efficient management of the resources of the mobile devices.La transmisión de datos se ha convertido en una necesidad en diversos ámbitos, como en las redes sociales con sus diversas aplicaciones, o en las áreas científicas y de ingeniería donde, por ejemplo, el uso de sensores para capturar datos está creciendo, o en situaciones de emergencia donde impera la necesidad de tener un sistema de comunicación para coordinar las operaciones de rescate. Las redes inalámbricas actuales han sido capaces de resolver estos problemas en gran medida, pero ¿qué podemos hacer cuando una infraestructura de soporte fija no está disponible o estas se vuelven inoperantes debido a la saturación de peticiones de red? Las redes inalámbricas oportunísticas son una alternativa a considerar en estas situaciones, ya que su funcionamiento no depende de la existencia de una infraestructura de telecomunicaciones sino que la conectividad es a través de la cooperación organizada de los usuarios.
Esta tesis de investigación se centra en estos tipos de redes oportunísticas y tiene como objetivo mejorar la difusión de información analizando las principales causas que influyen en el rendimiento de la transmisión de datos. Las redes oportunísticas no dependen de una topología fija, sino que dependen del número y la movilidad de los usuarios, del tipo y cantidad de información generada y enviada, así como de las características físicas de los dispositivos móviles que los usuarios tienen para transmitir los datos. La combinación de estos elementos influye en la duración del tiempo de contacto entre usuarios móviles, afectando directamente a la probabilidad de entrega de información.
Esta tesis comienza presentando un exhaustivo estudio del ``estado del arte", donde presentamos las contribuciones más importantes relacionadas con esta área y las soluciones existentes para la evaluación de las redes oportunísticas, tales como modelos de simulación, protocolos de enrutamiento, herramientas de simulación, entre otros. Tras ofrecer esta amplia compilación de investigaciones, se evalúa el consumo de recursos de los dispositivos móviles que afectan al rendimiento de las aplicaciones de redes oportunísticas, desde el punto de vista energético así como de la memoria.
A continuación, analizamos el rendimiento de las redes oportunísticas considerando tanto los entornos peatonales como vehiculares. Los enfoques estudiados incluyen el uso de nodos fijos adicionales y diferentes tecnologías de transmisión de datos, para mejorar la duración del contacto entre dispositivos móviles.
Finalmente, proponemos un esquema de difusión para mejorar el rendimiento de la transmisión de datos basado en la extensión de la duración del tiempo de contacto, y de la probabilidad de que los usuarios colaboren en este proceso. Este enfoque se complementa con la gestión eficiente de los recursos de los dispositivos móviles.La transmissió de dades s'ha convertit en una necessitat en diversos àmbits, com ara en les xarxes socials amb les diverses aplicacions d'interacció, o en les àrees científiques i d'enginyeria, en les quals, per exemple, l'ús de sensors per a capturar dades creix en l'actualitat, o en situacions d'emergència en què impera la necessitat de tenir un sistema de comunicació per a coordinar les operacions de rescat. Les xarxes sense fil han sigut capaces de resoldre aquests problemes en gran manera, però què podem fer quan una infraestructura de suport fixa no està disponible, o bé aquestes es tornen inoperants a causa de la saturació de peticions de xarxa? Les xarxes sense fil oportunistes són una alternativa que cal considerar en aquestes situacions, ja que el funcionament d'aquestes xarxes no depèn de l'existència d'una infraestructura de telecomunicacions, sinó que la connectivitat s'hi aconsegueix a través de la cooperació organitzada dels usuaris.
Aquesta tesi de recerca se centra en aquest tipus de xarxes, i té com a objectiu millorar la difusió d'informació en xarxes oportunistes tot analitzant les principals causes que influeixen en el rendiment de la transmissió de dades. Aquesta tesi comença amb un estudi exhaustiu de l'estat de la qüestió, en què presentem les contribucions més importants relacionades amb aquesta àrea i les solucions oferides per a l'avaluació de les xarxes oportunistes, com ara models de simulació, protocols d'encaminament o eines de simulació, entre d'altres. Després de mostrar aquest ampli panorama, s'avalua el consum dels recursos dels dispositius mòbils que afecten l'acompliment de les aplicacions de xarxes oportunistes, tant des del punt de vista energètic com de la memòria.
A continuació, analitzem l'acompliment de xarxes oportunistes considerant tant els entorns de vianants com els vehiculars. Els enfocaments estudiats inclouen l'ús de nodes fixos addicionals i diferents tecnologies de transmissió de dades per a millorar la durada del contacte entre dispositius mòbils.
Finalment, proposem un esquema de difusió per a millorar el rendiment de la transmissió de dades basat en l'extensió de la durada del temps de contacte, i de la probabilitat que els usuaris col·laboren en aquest procés. Delay Tolerant Networks for Efficient Information Harvesting and Distribution in Intelligent Transportation Systems
[EN] Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) can make transportation safer, more efficient, and more sustainable
by applying various information and communication technologies. One of these technologies are \acfp{VN}.
\acp{VN} combine different communication solutions such as cellular networks,
\acfp{VANET}, or IEEE 802.11 technologies to provide connectivity among
vehicles, and between vehicles and road infrastructure.
This thesis focuses on VNs, and considers that the high speed of the nodes
and the presence of obstacles like buildings, produces a highly variable network
topology, as well as more frequent partitions in the network. Therefore,
classical \ac{MANET} protocols do not adapt well to VANETs. Under these
conditions, \ac{DTN}
have been proposed as an alternative able to cope with these adverse
characteristics. In DTN, when a message cannot be routed
to its destination, it is not immediately dropped but it is instead stored and
carried until a new route becomes available. The combination of VN and
DTN is called \acp{VDTN}.
In this thesis, we propose a new VDTN protocol designed to collect
information from vehicular sensors. Our proposal, called \ac{MSDP}, combines
information about the localization obtained from a GNSS system with the actual
street/road layout obtained from a Navigation System (NS) to define a new
routing metric. Both analytical and simulation results prove that MSDP outperforms
previous proposals.
Concerning the deployment of VNs and VANET technologies, technology
already left behind the innovation and the standardization phases, and it is
about time it reach the first early adopters in the market. However, most car
manufacturers have decided to implement VN devices in the form of On Board
Units (OBUs), which are expensive, heavily manufacturer dependent, and
difficult to upgrade. These facts are delaying the deployment of VN. To boost
this process, we have developed the GRCBox architecture. This architecture is
based on low-cost devices and enables the establishment of V2X, \emph{i.e.} V2I and V2V, communications
while integrating users by easing the use of general purpose devices like
smartphones, tablets or laptops. To demonstrate the viability of the GRCBox
architecture, we combined it with a DTN platform called Scampi to obtain
actual results over a real VDTN scenario. We also
present several GRCBox-aware applications that illustrate how developers can
create applications that bring the potential of VN to user devices.[ES] Los sistemas de transporte inteligente (ITS) son el soporte para el establecimiento de un
transporte más seguro, más eficiente y más sostenible mediante el uso de
tecnologías de la información y las comunicaciones.
Una de estas tecnologías son las redes vehiculares
(VNs). Las VNs combinan diferentes tecnologías de comunicación como las redes
celulares, las redes ad-hoc vehiculares (VANETs) o las redes 802.11p para
proporcionar conectividad entre vehículos, y entre vehículos y la
infraestructura de carreteras.
Esta tesis se centra en las VNs, en las cuales la alta velocidad de los
nodos
y la presencia de obstáculos como edificios producen una topología de red
altamente variable, así como frecuentes particiones en la red. Debido a estas características,
los protocolos para redes móviles ad-hoc (MANETs) no se adaptan bien a las
VANETs. En estas condiciones, las redes tolerantes a retardos (DTNs) se han
propuesto como una alternativa capaz de hacer frente a estos problemas. En DTN,
cuando un mensaje no puede ser encaminado hacia su destino, no es
inmediatamente descartado sino es almacenado hasta que una nueva ruta esta disponible.
Cuando las VNs y las DTNs se combinan surgen las redes vehiculares tolerantes
a retardos (VDTN).
En esta tesis proponemos un nuevo protocolo para VDTNs diseñado para recolectar
la información generada por sensores vehiculares. Nuestra propuesta, llamada
MSDP, combina la información obtenida del servicio de información geográfica
(GIS) con el mapa real de las calles obtenido del sistema de navegación (NS)
para definir una nueva métrica de encaminamiento. Resultados analíticos y
mediante simulaciones prueban que MSDP mejora el rendimiento de propuestas
anteriores.
En relación con el despliegue de las VNs y las tecnologías VANET, la
tecnología ha dejado atrás las fases de innovación y estandarización,
ahora es el momento de alcanzar a los primeros usuarios del mercado. Sin embargo,
la mayoría de fabricantes han decidido implementar los dispositivos para VN
como unidades de a bordo (OBU), las cuales son caras y difíciles de
actualizar. Además, las OBUs son muy dependientes del fabricante original.
Todo esto esta retrasando el despliegue de las VNs. Para acelerar la adopción
de las VNs, hemos desarrollado la arquitectura GRCBox. La arquitectura GRCBox
esta basada en un dispositivo de bajo coste que permite a los usuarios usar
comunicaciones V2X (V2V y V2I) mientras utilizan dispositivos de propósito general como
teléfonos inteligentes, tabletas o portátiles. Las pruebas incluidas en esta
tesis demuestran la viabilidad de la arquitectura GRCBox. Mediante la
combinación de nuestra GRCBox y una plataforma de DTN llamada Scampi hemos
diseñado y probado un escenario VDTN real. También presentamos como los
desarrolladores pueden crear nuevas aplicaciones GRCBox para llevar el
potencial de las VN a los dispositivos de usuario.[CA] Els sistemes de transport intel·ligent (ITS) poden crear un transport més
segur, més eficient i més sostenible mitjançant l'ús de tecnologies de la
informació i les comunicacions aplicades al transport.
Una d'aquestes tecnologies són les xarxes vehiculars (VN). Les VN combinen
diferents tecnologies de comunicació, com ara les xarxes cel·lulars, les
xarxes ad-hoc vehiculars (VANET) o les xarxes 802.11p, per a proporcionar
comunicació entre vehicles, i entre vehicles i la infraestructura de
carreteres.
Aquesta tesi se centra en les VANET, en les quals l'alta velocitat dels nodes
i la presència d'obstacles, com els edificis, produeixen una topologia de
xarxa altament variable, i també freqüents particions en la xarxa. Per aquest
motiu, els protocols per a xarxes mòbils ad-hoc (MANET) no s'adapten bé. En
aquestes condicions, les xarxes tolerants a retards (DTN) s'han proposat com

missatge no pot ser encaminat cap a la seua destinació, no és immediatament

Quan les VN i les DTN es combinen sorgeixen les xarxes vehicular tolerants a
retards (VDTN).
En aquesta tesi proposem un nou protocol per a VDTN dissenyat per a
recol·lectar la informació generada per sensors vehiculars. La nostra
proposta, anomenada MSDP, combina la informació obtinguda del servei
d'informació geogràfica (GIS) amb el mapa real dels carrers obtingut del
sistema de navegació (NS) per a definir una nova mètrica d'encaminament.
Resultats analítics i mitjançant simulacions proven que MSDP millora el
rendiment de propostes prèvies.
En relació amb el desplegament de les VN i les tecnologies VANET, la
tecnologia ha deixat arrere les fases d'innovació i estandardització, ara és
temps d'aconseguir als primers usuaris del mercat. No obstant això, la majoria
de fabricants han decidit implementar els dispositius per a VN com a unitats
de bord (OBU), les quals són cares i difícils d'actualitzar. A més, les OBU
són molt dependents del fabricant original. Tot això està retardant el
desplegament de les VN.
Per a accelerar l'adopció de les VN, hem desenvolupat l'arquitectura GRCBox.
L'arquitectura GRCBox està basada en un dispositiu de baix cost que permet als
usuaris usar comunicacions V2V mentre usen dispositius de propòsit general,
com ara telèfons intel·ligents, tauletes o portàtils. Les proves incloses en
aquesta tesi demostren la viabilitat de l'arquitectura GRCBox. Mitjançant la
combinació de la nostra GRCBox i la plataforma de DTN Scampi, hem dissenyat i
provat un escenari VDTN pràctic. També presentem com els desenvolupadors poden
crear noves aplicacions GRCBox per a portar el potencial de les VN als

Information-centric networking for machine-to-machine data delivery: A case study in smart grid applications
Largely motivated by the proliferation of content-centric applications in the Internet, information-centric networking has attracted the attention of the research community. By tailoring network operations around named information objects instead of end hosts, ICN yields a series of desirable features such as the spatiotemporal decoupling of communicating entities and the support of in-network caching. In this article, we advocate the introduction of such ICN features in a new, rapidly transforming communication domain: the smart grid. With the rapid introduction of multiple new actors, such as distributed (renewable) energy resources and electric vehicles, smart grids present a new networking landscape where a diverse set of multi-party machine-to-machine applications are required to enhance the observability of the power grid, often in real time and on top of a diverse set of communication infrastructures. Presenting a generic architectural framework, we show how ICN can address the emerging smart grid communication challenges. Based on real power grid topologies from a power distribution network in the Netherlands, we further employ simulations to both demonstrate the feasibility of an ICN solution for the support of real-time smart grid applications and further quantify the performance benefits brought by ICN against the current host-centric paradigm. Specifically, we show how ICN can support real-time state estimation in the medium voltage power grid, where high volumes of synchrophasor measurement data from distributed vantage points must be delivered within a very stringent end-to-end delay constraint, while swiftly overcoming potential power grid component failures. © 1986-2012 IEEE
Medium access control, error control and routing in underwater acoustic networks: a discussion on protocol design and implementation
The journey of underwater communication which began from Leonardo’s era took four and a half centuries to find practical applications for military purposes during World War II. However, over the last three decades, underwater acoustic communications witnessed a massive development due to the advancements in the design of underwater communicating
peripherals and their supporting protocols. Successively, doors are opened for a wide range of applications to employ in the underwater environment, such as oceanography, pollution
monitoring, offshore exploration, disaster prevention, navigation assistance, monitoring, coastal patrol and surveillance. Different applications may have different characteristics and hence, may require different network architectures. For instance, routing protocols designed for unpartitioned multi-hop networks are not suitable for Delay-Tolerant Networks. Furthermore, single-hop networks do not need routing protocols at all. Therefore, before
developing a protocol one must study the network architecture properly and design it accordingly.
There are several other factors which should also be considered with the network architecture while designing an efficient protocol for underwater networks, such as long propagation delay, limited bandwidth, limited battery power, high bit error rate of the channel and several other adverse properties of the channel, such as, multi-path, fading and refractive behaviors. Moreover, the environment also has an impact on the performance of the protocols designed for underwater networks. Even temperature changes in a single day have an impact on the performance of the protocols. A good protocol designed for any network should consider some or all of these characteristics to achieve better performance.
In this thesis, we first discuss the impact of the environment on the performance of MAC and routing protocols. From our investigation, we discover that even temperature changes within a day may affect the sound speed profile and hence, the channel changes and the protocol performance vary. After that we discuss several protocols which are specifically designed for underwater acoustic networks to serve different purposes and for different network architectures. Underwater Selective Repeat (USR) is an error control protocol designed to assure reliable data transmission in the MAC layer. One may suspect that employing an error control technique over a channel which already suffers from long propagation delays is a burden. However, USR utilizes long propagation by transmitting multiple packets in a single RTT using an interlacing technique. After USR, a routing protocol for surveillance networks is discussed where some sensors are laid down at the bottom of the sea and some sinks are placed outside the area. If a sensor detects an asset within its detection range, it announces the presence of intruders by transmitting packets to the sinks. It may happen
that the discovered asset is an enemy ship or an enemy submarine which creates noise to jam the network. Therefore, in surveillance networks, it is necessary that the protocols have
jamming resistance capabilities. Moreover, since the network supports multiple sinks with similar anycast address, we propose a Jamming Resistance multi-path Multi-Sink Routing
Protocol (MSRP) using a source routing technique. However, the problem of source routing is that it suffers from large overhead (every packet includes the whole path information) with
respect to other routing techniques, and also suffers from the unidirectional link problem. Therefore, another routing protocol based on a distance vector technique, called Multi-path
Routing with Limited Cross-Path Interference (L-CROP) protocol is proposed, which employs a neighbor-aware multi-path discovery algorithm to support low interference multiple paths
between each source-destination pair. Following that, another routing protocol is discussed for next generation coastal patrol and surveillance network, called Underwater Delay-Tolerant
Network (UDTN) routing where some AUVs carry out the patrolling work of a given area and report to a shore based control-center. Since the area to be patrolled is large, AUVs
experience intermittent connectivity. In our proposed protocol, two nodes that understand to be in contact with each other calculate and divide their contact duration equally so that
every node gets a fair share of the contact duration to exchange data. Moreover, a probabilistic spray technique is employed to restrict the number of packet transmissions and for error correction a modified version of USR is employed.
In the appendix, we discuss a framework which was designed by our research group to realize underwater communication through simulation which is used in most of the simulations in this thesis, called DESERT Underwater (short for DEsign, Simulate, Emulate and Realize Test-beds for Underwater network protocols). It is an underwater extension of the
NS-Miracle simulator to support the design and implementation of underwater network protocols. Its creation assists the researchers in to utilizing the same codes designed for the
simulator to employ in actual hardware devices and test in the real underwater scenario
Performance evaluation of cooperation strategies for m-health services and applications
Health telematics are becoming a major improvement for patients’ lives, especially for
disabled, elderly, and chronically ill people. Information and communication technologies have
rapidly grown along with the mobile Internet concept of anywhere and anytime connection.
In this context, Mobile Health (m-Health) proposes healthcare services delivering, overcoming
geographical, temporal and even organizational barriers. Pervasive and m-Health services aim
to respond several emerging problems in health services, including the increasing number of
chronic diseases related to lifestyle, high costs in existing national health services, the need
to empower patients and families to self-care and manage their own healthcare, and the need
to provide direct access to health services, regardless the time and place. Mobile Health (m-
Health) systems include the use of mobile devices and applications that interact with patients
and caretakers. However, mobile devices have several constraints (such as, processor, energy,
and storage resource limitations), affecting the quality of service and user experience. Architectures
based on mobile devices and wireless communications presents several challenged issues
and constraints, such as, battery and storage capacity, broadcast constraints, interferences, disconnections,
noises, limited bandwidths, and network delays. In this sense, cooperation-based
approaches are presented as a solution to solve such limitations, focusing on increasing network
connectivity, communication rates, and reliability. Cooperation is an important research topic
that has been growing in recent years. With the advent of wireless networks, several recent
studies present cooperation mechanisms and algorithms as a solution to improve wireless networks
performance. In the absence of a stable network infrastructure, mobile nodes cooperate
with each other performing all networking functionalities. For example, it can support intermediate
nodes forwarding packets between two distant nodes.
This Thesis proposes a novel cooperation strategy for m-Health services and applications.
This reputation-based scheme uses a Web-service to handle all the nodes reputation and networking
permissions. Its main goal is to provide Internet services to mobile devices without
network connectivity through cooperation with neighbor devices. Therefore resolving the above
mentioned network problems and resulting in a major improvement for m-Health network architectures
performances. A performance evaluation of this proposal through a real network
scenario demonstrating and validating this cooperative scheme using a real m-Health application
is presented. A cryptography solution for m-Health applications under cooperative environments,
called DE4MHA, is also proposed and evaluated using the same real network scenario and
the same m-Health application. Finally, this work proposes, a generalized cooperative application
framework, called MobiCoop, that extends the incentive-based cooperative scheme for
m-Health applications for all mobile applications. Its performance evaluation is also presented
through a real network scenario demonstrating and validating MobiCoop using different mobile
applications
