From the conception to the definition of a new service: the case of the European GeoPKDD project”
La tesi affronta il processo che parte dalla generazione di un nuovo servizio di tipo technology push ed arriva fino alla sua definizione, attraverso l’analisi del lavoro svolto per WIND Telecomunicazioni s.p.a. nell’ambito del progetto Europeo GeoPKDD.
Dopo un inquadramento teorico sulle metodologie di sviluppo di nuovi servizi e sulle peculiarità di uno sviluppo technology push rispetto al caso market pull, il lavoro si concentra sul processo che, partendo dalla generazione di nuove idee basate sulla tecnologia GeoPKDD, si è concluso con la definizione delle specifiche finali da implementare nel servizio finale
Mastering the Spatio-Temporal Knowledge Discovery Process
The thesis addresses a topic of great importance: a framework for data mining positioning data collected by personal mobile devices.
The main contribution of this thesis is the creation of a theoretical and practical framework in order to manage the complex Knowledge discovery process on mobility data. Hence the creation of such framework leads to the integration of very different aspects of the process with their assumptions and requirements. The result is a homogeneous system which gives the possibility to exploit the power of all the components with the same flexibilities of a database such as a new way to use the ontology for an automatic reasoning on trajectory data. Furthermore two extensions are invented and developed and then integrated in the system to confirm the extensibility of it: a innovative way to reconstruct the trajectories considering the uncertainty of the path followed and a Location prediction algorithm called WhereNext.
Another important contribution of the thesis is the experimentation on a real case of study on analysis of mobility data. It has been shown the usefulness of the system for a mobility manager who is provided with a knowledge discovery framework
Current state of personal data protection in electronic voting: demand on legislature’s Bill
The strongest benefit has been offered for the implementation of electronic voting related to cost and time reduction. Therefore, recent publicity concerning the reliability, security and privacy issue of various e-voting systems has increased public scrutiny of the machines themselves as well as the election process as a whole. In the greater scale, it could reduce public confidence to entrust the adoption of e-voting system to augment participation rate, to improve the quality of voting and to aid the political right effectively and efficiently. This paper aims to provide general analysis of typical legal issues and its demand for personal data protection based on demographic data such as gender, age, occupation, electoral participation, education, earnings and legal literacy. By understanding the perception of voters in viewing current electoral regulation are essential to provide some insights and suggestion for better improvement, either through drafting or enforcing legislation. Musings on privacy issues in health research involving disaggregate geographic data about individuals
This paper offers a state-of-the-art overview of the intertwined privacy, confidentiality, and security issues that are commonly encountered in health research involving disaggregate geographic data about individuals. Key definitions are provided, along with some examples of actual and potential security and confidentiality breaches and related incidents that captured mainstream media and public interest in recent months and years. The paper then goes on to present a brief survey of the research literature on location privacy/confidentiality concerns and on privacy-preserving solutions in conventional health research and beyond, touching on the emerging privacy issues associated with online consumer geoinformatics and location-based services. The 'missing ring' (in many treatments of the topic) of data security is also discussed. Personal information and privacy legislations in two countries, Canada and the UK, are covered, as well as some examples of recent research projects and events about the subject. Select highlights from a June 2009 URISA (Urban and Regional Information Systems Association) workshop entitled 'Protecting Privacy and Confidentiality of Geographic Data in Health Research' are then presented. The paper concludes by briefly charting the complexity of the domain and the many challenges associated with it, and proposing a novel, 'one stop shop' case-based reasoning framework to streamline the provision of clear and individualised guidance for the design and approval of new research projects (involving geographical identifiers about individuals), including crisp recommendations on which specific privacy-preserving solutions and approaches would be suitable in each case
A qualitative approach to the identification, visualisation and interpretation of repetitive motion patterns in groups of moving point objects
Discovering repetitive patterns is important in a wide range of research areas, such as bioinformatics and human movement analysis. This study puts forward a new methodology to identify, visualise and interpret repetitive motion patterns in groups of Moving Point Objects (MPOs). The methodology consists of three steps. First, motion patterns are qualitatively described using the Qualitative Trajectory Calculus (QTC). Second, a similarity analysis is conducted to compare motion patterns and identify repetitive patterns. Third, repetitive motion patterns are represented and interpreted in a continuous triangular model. As an illustration of the usefulness of combining these hitherto separated methods, a specific movement case is examined: Samba dance, a rhythmical dance will? many repetitive movements. The results show that the presented methodology is able to successfully identify, visualize and interpret the contained repetitive motions

since they deal with various key aspects, such as traffc
management and mobility, through the use of information
technologies (ITs). This work presents a review of
recent studies using information technologies for urban
analysis and mobility in cities. A descriptive analysis
of automated methods for collecting and analyzing citizens’
mobility patterns is performed; it is centered in
smart card use, geolocation and geotagging. It is concluded
that a robust communication infrastructure, supported
by an effcient computational platform allowing
big data management and ubiquitous computing, is a
crucial aspect for urban management in a smart community.La concentración de la población en los centros
urbanos es una problemática mundial que requiere de estrategias
que permitan organizar sus procesos y mejorar
la calidad de vida. La creación de comunidades inteligentes
se muestra como una solución sostenible, debido a que
éstas trabajan aspectos claves para el desarrollo urbano,
como la gestión de tráfco y la movilidad, apoyada en las
tecnologías de la información (TICs). Este trabajo presenta
una revisión del estado del arte en cuanto a la aplicación
de las TICs al análisis urbano y movilidad ciudadana. Se
analizan descriptivamente diversos métodos automáticos
para la recolección y el análisis del patrón de movilidad de
los ciudadanos, enfocándose en el uso de tarjetas inteligentes,
geolocalización y geoetiquetado. Se encuentra que una
infraestructura de comunicaciones robusta, apoyada en
una plataforma computacional ágil con manejo de grandes
datos y computación ubicua, es primordial para la gestión
urbana en una comunidad inteligente
