Data Driven Analysis of Tiny Touchscreen Performance with MicroJam
The widespread adoption of mobile devices, such as smartphones and tablets,
has made touchscreens a common interface for musical performance. New mobile
musical instruments have been designed that embrace collaborative creation and
that explore the affordances of mobile devices, as well as their constraints.
While these have been investigated from design and user experience
perspectives, there is little examination of the performers' musical outputs.
In this work, we introduce a constrained touchscreen performance app, MicroJam,
designed to enable collaboration between performers, and engage in a novel
data-driven analysis of more than 1600 performances using the app. MicroJam
constrains performances to five seconds, and emphasises frequent and casual
music making through a social media-inspired interface. Performers collaborate
by replying to performances, adding new musical layers that are played back at
the same time. Our analysis shows that users tend to focus on the centre and
diagonals of the touchscreen area, and tend to swirl or swipe rather than tap.
We also observe that while long swipes dominate the visual appearance of
performances, the majority of interactions are short with limited expressive
possibilities. Our findings are summarised into a set of design recommendations
for MicroJam and other touchscreen apps for social musical interaction
Content-Based Music Retrieval of Irish Traditional Music Via a Virtual Tin Whistle
We present a mobilephon eapplication associating a virtual musical instrument (emulating a tin whistle) to a content based music retrieval system for Irish Traditional Music (ITM). It performs tune recognition, following the architecture of the existing query-by-playing software Tunepal (Duggan & O’Shea, 2011). Bendit_I/O: A System for Extending Mediated and Networked Performance Techniques to Circuit-Bent Devices
Circuit bending—the act of modifying a consumer device\u27s internal circuitry in search of new, previously-unintended responses—provides artists with a chance to subvert expectations for how a certain piece of hardware should be utilized, asking them to view everyday objects as complex electronic instruments. Along with the ability to create avant-garde instruments from unique and nostalgic sound sources, the practice of circuit bending serves as a methodology for exploring the histories of discarded objects through activism, democratization, and creative resurrection. While a rich history of circuit bending continues to inspire artists today, the recent advent of smart musical instruments and the growing number of hybrid tools available for creating connective musical experiences through networks asks us to reconsider the ways in which repurposed devices can continue to play a role in modern sonic art.
Bendit_I/O serves as a synthesis of the technologies and aesthetics of the circuit bending and Networked Musical Performance (NMP) practices. The framework extends techniques native to the practices of telematic and network art to hacked hardware so that artists can design collaborative and mediated experiences that incorporate old devices into new realities. Consisting of user-friendly hardware and software components, Bendit_I/O aims to be an entry point for novice artists into both of the creative realms it brings together.
This document presents details on the components of the Bendit_I/O framework along with an analysis of their use in three new compositions. Additional research serves to place the framework in historical context through literature reviews of previous work undertaken in the circuit bending and networked musical performance practices. Additionally, a case is made for performing hacked consumer hardware across a wireless network, emphasizing how extensions to current circuit bending and NMP practices provide the ability to probe our relationships with hardware through collaborative, mediated, and multimodal methods
Towards a Practitioner Model of Mobile Music
This practice-based research investigates the mobile paradigm in the context of
electronic music, sound and performance; it considers the idea of mobile as a lens
through which a new model of electronic music performance can be interrogated. This
research explores mobile media devices as tools and modes of artistic expression in
everyday contexts and situations. While many of the previous studies have tended to
focus upon the design and construction of new hardware and software systems, this
research puts performance practice at the centre of its analysis.
This research builds a methodological and practical framework that draws upon
theories of mobile-mediated aurality, rhetoric on the practice of walking, relational
aesthetics, and urban and natural environments as sites for musical performance. The
aim is to question the spaces commonly associated with electronic music – where it is
situated, listened to and experienced. This thesis concentrates on the creative use of
existing systems using generic mobile devices – smartphones, tablets and HD cameras
– and commercially available apps. It will describe the development, implementation
and evaluation of a self-contained performance system utilising digital signal
processing apps and the interconnectivity of an inter-app routing system. This is an
area of investigation that other research programmes have not addressed in any depth.
This research’s enquiries will be held in dynamic and often unpredictable
conditions, from navigating busy streets to the fold down shelf on the back of a train
seat, as a solo performer or larger groups of players, working with musicians, nonmusicians
and other participants. Along the way, it examines how ubiquitous mobile
technology and its total access might promote inclusivity and creativity through the
cultural adhesive of mobile media. This research aims to explore how being mobile
has unrealised potential to change the methods and experiences of making electronic
music, to generate a new kind of performer identity and as a consequence lead
towards a practitioner model of mobile music
CHORUS Deliverable 2.2: Second report - identification of multi-disciplinary key issues for gap analysis toward EU multimedia search engines roadmap
After addressing the state-of-the-art during the first year of Chorus and establishing the existing landscape in
multimedia search engines, we have identified and analyzed gaps within European research effort during our second year.
In this period we focused on three directions, notably technological issues, user-centred issues and use-cases and socio-
economic and legal aspects. These were assessed by two central studies: firstly, a concerted vision of functional breakdown
of generic multimedia search engine, and secondly, a representative use-cases descriptions with the related discussion on
requirement for technological challenges. Both studies have been carried out in cooperation and consultation with the
community at large through EC concertation meetings (multimedia search engines cluster), several meetings with our
Think-Tank, presentations in international conferences, and surveys addressed to EU projects coordinators as well as
National initiatives coordinators. Based on the obtained feedback we identified two types of gaps, namely core
technological gaps that involve research challenges, and “enablers”, which are not necessarily technical research
challenges, but have impact on innovation progress. New socio-economic trends are presented as well as emerging legal
challenges
