Issues of Hierarchical Heterogeneous Modeling in Component Reusability
International audienceHeterogeneous systems are systems that obey different functioning laws. For instance, during the design of embedded systems, it is generally necessary to study both the controller and the environment that it controls, these two subsystems being clearly different in nature. Moreover, data processing applications are also increasingly heterogeneous, mixing different technical domains such as telecommunications, man-machine interface, analog and digital electronic, signal processing algorithms. To combine these different technology domains, modeling languages and platforms generally use a hierarchical approach. This paper highlights how the hierarchy of the model and the changes of model of computation are coupled and why this coupling forbids the use of components that have inputs or outputs that obey different models of computation. In addition, this paper shows that what happens when data crosses the boundary between two domains depends on the modeling environment and it gives some means of managing component in the same level of the hierarchy
Differential fast fixed-point algorithms for underdetermined instantaneous and convolutive partial blind source separation
This paper concerns underdetermined linear instantaneous and convolutive
blind source separation (BSS), i.e., the case when the number of observed mixed
signals is lower than the number of sources. We propose partial BSS methods,
which separate supposedly nonstationary sources of interest (while keeping
residual components for the other, supposedly stationary, "noise" sources).
These methods are based on the general differential BSS concept that we
introduced before. In the instantaneous case, the approach proposed in this
paper consists of a differential extension of the FastICA method (which does
not apply to underdetermined mixtures). In the convolutive case, we extend our
recent time-domain fast fixed-point C-FICA algorithm to underdetermined
mixtures. Both proposed approaches thus keep the attractive features of the
FastICA and C-FICA methods. Our approaches are based on differential sphering
processes, followed by the optimization of the differential nonnormalized
kurtosis that we introduce in this paper. Experimental tests show that these
differential algorithms are much more robust to noise sources than the standard
FastICA and C-FICA algorithms.Comment: this paper describes our differential FastICA-like algorithms for
linear instantaneous and convolutive underdetermined mixture
Complex Independent Component Analysis of Frequency-Domain Electroencephalographic Data
Independent component analysis (ICA) has proven useful for modeling brain and
electroencephalographic (EEG) data. Here, we present a new, generalized method
to better capture the dynamics of brain signals than previous ICA algorithms.
We regard EEG sources as eliciting spatio-temporal activity patterns,
corresponding to, e.g., trajectories of activation propagating across cortex.
This leads to a model of convolutive signal superposition, in contrast with the
commonly used instantaneous mixing model. In the frequency-domain, convolutive
mixing is equivalent to multiplicative mixing of complex signal sources within
distinct spectral bands. We decompose the recorded spectral-domain signals into
independent components by a complex infomax ICA algorithm. First results from a
visual attention EEG experiment exhibit (1) sources of spatio-temporal dynamics
in the data, (2) links to subject behavior, (3) sources with a limited spectral
extent, and (4) a higher degree of independence compared to sources derived by
standard ICA.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures. Added final journal reference, fixed minor

Multi-Detector Multi-Component spectral matching and applications for CMB data analysis
We present a new method for analyzing multi--detector maps containing
contributions from several components. Our method, based on matching the data
to a model in the spectral domain, permits to estimate jointly the spatial
power spectra of the components and of the noise, as well as the mixing
coefficients. It is of particular relevance for the analysis of
millimeter--wave maps containing a contribution from CMB anisotropies.Comment: 15 pages, 7 Postscript figures, submitted to MNRA
The VEX-93 environment as a hybrid tool for developing knowledge systems with different problem solving techniques
The paper describes VEX-93 as a hybrid environment for developing
knowledge-based and problem solver systems. It integrates methods and
techniques from artificial intelligence, image and signal processing and
data analysis, which can be mixed. Two hierarchical levels of reasoning
contains an intelligent toolbox with one upper strategic inference engine
and four lower ones containing specific reasoning models: truth-functional
(rule-based), probabilistic (causal networks), fuzzy (rule-based) and
case-based (frames). There are image/signal processing-analysis capabilities
in the form of programming languages with more than one hundred primitive
functions.
User-made programs are embeddable within knowledge basis, allowing the
combination of perception and reasoning. The data analyzer toolbox contains
a collection of numerical classification, pattern recognition and ordination
methods, with neural network tools and a data base query language at
inference engines's disposal.
VEX-93 is an open system able to communicate with external computer programs
relevant to a particular application. Metaknowledge can be used for
elaborate conclusions, and man-machine interaction includes, besides windows
and graphical interfaces, acceptance of voice commands and production of
speech output.
The system was conceived for real-world applications in general domains, but
an example of a concrete medical diagnostic support system at present under
completion as a cuban-spanish project is mentioned.
Present version of VEX-93 is a huge system composed by about one and half
millions of lines of C code and runs in microcomputers under Windows 3.1.Postprint (published version
